@AlexanderLewisMD Just because you have an"MD" by your name doesn't mean you Know anything. Iko Iko is a traditional song, meaning, it's been around for awhile. and myself and a bunch of other people think the dead's version is a fine version. so go Fuck yourself!!!
Iko Iko is a great song. Jerry Garcia and the Gratefull Dead did not give this song justice.
Check out the original Dixie Cups and Captain Jack's versions.
I thought the Dead were always on cocaine, which I think would make them faster on the instruments and singing. This was a pathetic version of IKO IKO.
just acquired some share tapes new years eve. the 68 iko iko recording was the first song i heard this year drivin home with a hangover, token on a month old Marlboro hahaha great life
@SISKIND1968 I love me the Brent years, but Pig pen is still my favortie keyboardest. Brent and Jerry played off each other very well, but after pig died they changed their sound. There was not as much of a blues feel. Love them both for differnet reasons,
Panic sucks...Enjoy the fruits of their labor, and if you can't, go watch some Panic vids. Thanks for the post, though, watch how much fun Jerry is having when Brent goes into solo..Magical.
@spacecadet988 have no idea what dmb is, but have fun venting your frustration...doesn't change the fact that Widespread Panic is better than the grateful dead
@Hellzyead ......this is the most ass backwards comment i have ever heard. So why does Warren Haynes say that it's "such a pleasure" to play with The Dead (sometimes) and all of the affiliated side projects of GD.Hmmmm? Think about what you say before you say it. Jam bands today wouldn't be an iota of what they r w/o the guiding light and path clearing ingenuity of a force called the Grateful Dead. Pfft to u and pfft to those like you who are SO uninformed.
Yeah, I've always felt that my boys sounded really good in 89'. Jerry had recouped a lot from tragic 86' coma. 89' they really were tighter as a band and it clear resonation. I loved Brent on the keys, he was such an amazing keyboard palyer. Jerry, Phil, Bob, Brent, Bill and Mickey in musical form. The shows at Alpine Valley were unbelievable too.
Everyone Listen To Brent At 3:57 THat Is REALLY Why 89 Is One Of My Favorite Years The Band Was Great , Jerry Was great And THEY WERE ENERGETIC... Longest Keyboard Solo In Aiko Aiko I Have Heard From Brent!
Fucking awesome show! Jerry is really having a good time up there , he's actually dancing!...Goddamn I miss going to shows so bad I actually cry when I see videos like this.......
Listening to this one b4 we go out to watch The Final Four. Much rather be heading to Boston Garden to see The Boys. Deadheads all over the streets and permanent goose bumps ....gettin ready to fuckin jam.
archivedotorg has all you could ask for concerning the differences in the band over the years. give em a browse, it's great. check out '68, '72,' 74, '76, '79, '83. Practically all different bands.
@LittaGangsta aboslutely 100 percent legit. All of the artist on there have given written consent. Also, you dont have to download, most of the stuff is streamable.
@deadheadable I say Pigpen a few times and you are right. When I go to my Mother's grave I always stop by tto see the "treasures" left on his grave site.
@migueluspa My favorite years were the 70's and early 80's..I was a lucky little kid and had some very cool friends that brought me to my first shows at Winterland in 74...I was 13...we saw 3 shows in a row..needless to say my life was never the same ;-)...so I'm a bit partial to those early years..
@migueluspa not only Brent but Keith and Donna and Pigpen. saw shows with all 3 of those keyboardists. each one brought their own special magic to the band.
You are right on about Jerry being animated...this is awesome. Almost wish I hadn't stumbled upon it...kinda bums me out...it's been so long and I still can't believe I wont go to that next show and see my old friend in his spot on stage
I have heard countless of this, and tonight i just about came out of my skin with a shake them bones jones, and then I cried..Time to wake up and shake a little.... get it while you can... which way to shakedown street ??
The Greek Theatre still exists. I live in Berkeley and have seen everyone from Van Morrison, to Tom Petty and Robert Plant with Alysson Krauss last summer. It is on Piedmont Ave if you want to look it up. I wish The Dead would have played there but I know how much they're into Shoreline. It would be cooler to see them in a smaller setting though if you managed to snag a lucky ticket.
classic Jerry...love the 5:07ish...gonna fix yo chicken wyo!! love ya Jerry....to the people that got "it", it lives in our memories, and thru the music...to those that didnt get it, sorry, you missed the greatest ride on earth...FATMAN ROCKS
This video is sweet. Gotta love the Iko Iko Brent is fucking rippin it up towards the end thats some amazing skills, This video puts a huge smile on my face... Just look at how happy and energetic Jerry is a rare site in the later days. Dead for life.
Thats kinda ironic isnt it? listening to "The Grateful Dead" and die? its pretty awesome too I hope I pass on while listening to the dead! Dead Head for life babby!

From the start of The Dead till 1970 it was waaaaay more bluesy. But after good ole PigPen kicked the bucket, I feel it lost most of its blues.
