  • I'm sorry but this does THE GRAND DUKE absolutely no favours whatsoever. The principals are lagging behind - the female chorus is totally wrong as another comentator remarks - it upsets the entire balance. Southampton Op should know better.

  • The Prince and Princess are both very good, but the vocal balance is spoiled completely by having female supernumeraries. I love hearing the Princess's vocal line on the Aahs, but it is masked by so many voices in the same octave.

  • I mean what is this performance? Where was it staged?

  • It's the Grand Duke - the last of the operettas written by Gilbert & Sullivan (at the time Gilbert had apparently taken to putting opium in his pipe and the opera is strange to say the least - it is very rarely performed).

Southampton's production has been updated to the 1930's - it was performed at The Nuffield Theatre, southampton.

  • What on earth is this supposed to be?

  • It's the entry of The Prince and Princess of Monte Carlo...

    Ask me a harder one!
