Bobby Thomson and his teammates cheated that season. The Giants had some guy behind the bleachers relaying the opposing catchers' signals to their batters, and that's how they came back to beat the Dodgers. Thomson's batting average went from .250 to .350 after he started getting the signs.
Years ago I heard an interview with Lon Simmons. Lon said that Red Barber was pissed off at Russ Hodges for "over doing it" on Bobby Thomson's home run call. . . . according to Lon, Red Barber thought Russ's outburst was the most unprofessional thing he had ever heard.
thanks ernie, i was one of those kids who hid the transistor radio under his pillow back in the 1970's. you were the voice of my youth and things won't quit be the same. thanks.
The memories you gave us Ernie shall not be forgotten. Tears will flow for the next several days. But we will learn to smile again. Thank you for being a great person and a wonderful human being.
Giants/Dodgers...in truth and in fact the best rivalry in baseball history...Yankees/Red Sox is modern day marketing...not really a great rivalry becauae the Yankees almost always win...with Giants/Dodgers you never knew was going to win...and it has the most memorable moments...this homerun, 1962 playoff, Marichal hitting Roseboro upside the head with the bat, 1982 when they knocked each other out of the race on the last 2 days of the season, 1993 LA knocks SF (with 103 wins) out on last day
EH, I wouldn't knock Yankees-Sox... they go back to DiMaggio and Williams, then Mickey and Yaz, so that's in line with the Brooklyn Bums vs. The New York BASEBALL Giants...
I think both are great.
And, as a Mets fan, a rivalry that's REALLY been overlooked but now's getting the attention it deserves-
Mets and Phillies.
Cubs-Cards another great one...
Mets/Braves... THAT'S a GREAT historical rivalry, the Mets knocked them out in '69, the Braves had the '90s, the 9/11 Home Run...!
the other rivalries are ok but back in the day Giants/Dodgers was the epitome of rivalries in my opinion. Until 2004 Yanks/ Sox in my opinion wasn't really a rivalry but a grudge match on the Sox part cuz the Yanks ALWAYS won. In contrast with Giants/Dodgers you never knew who was gonna win. Then for many years after the two of them relocated the rivalry intensified cuz SF and LA have their own rivalry as cities quite apart from Giants/Dodgers. Its just In THIS decade that Yanks/Sox is bigger
@wwk68tig I heard ERNIE call a game once and I thought he sucked! This clown had no real talent. ANYBODY can say what they are looking at, but could he hit a curve ball? Harwell was just an overpaid jackass. I should have that job. Money for nothin!
It still amazes me that no one associated with the TV entities in New York would have kinescoped this chestnut from this great rivalry - NBC network, WNBT, or Giants flagship WPIX (it was on all three).

Great story. Thanks. Golly, I wish baseball would return to his rightful place. Whatever happened to "baseball, hot dogs, apple pie . . ."?
