Gravel: "I will spend the first six months of my presidency going around the country to bully the American people to vote for the National Initiative. And if they don't vote to empower themselves as lawmakers, and share power with me, I will quit. I don't want to be their leader."
He didn't get anywhere near that far. Maybe we didn't deserve him, but we needed him.
Why have people been so callous? You would think that over the past year it was the fashionable thing to take Mike Gravel for granted. He came in FOURTH at the Libertarian National Convention. I even talked to Nader a couple of months later about it and he just gave the callous response, "He never had a chance, did he?" What is wrong with everyone? Even the "heroes" are gatekeepers in an unbearable prison. Sometimes I feel like Mike Gravel is the only free man I've ever known.
don't know why I've never heard of this guy before. FINALLY a human beeing in politics. A man who cares. And he was discarded, I can't believe that a president like that got away. The more things change the more they stay the same.
I don't know how Norwegian news outlets decide to cover US Politics, but in the US, this man recieved no coverage, and could not afford to pay for lengthy infomercials like Obama. The major networks decided to make a few celebrities out of worthless candidates like Obama, Clinton, and Edwards and everyone else was sidelined. But what can you do? Media coverage is not a right.
Even when it was Edwards vs. Hilary vs. Obama, Edwards was passed up. You really expect me to believe those two are more qualified than John Edwards?? Now, Edwards is far from perfect, but at least he tries to sound honest. Obama and Hilary just give you lies and/or meaningless rhetoric about "change" or how much "experience" they supposedly have.
Oh yea, Hilary has SOO much more foreign policy experience than fucking Obama. Or how about when her health care plan failed as first lady?
Mike Gravel has been in the Senate 2 terms, one more term than even fucking Obama! Yet this bonehead from Illinois get nominated, above all other contenders. And who's helping them throughout the primaries and debates get even MORE leverage? The fucking corporate media, that's who! Not a truly independent media. A media that's actually allowed to set the terms of all debates except the 3 major presidential debates in the fall of election year.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well obviously the message is unintelligent because the music is worthless. I hope the corrupt dumbass featured in this video dies before his 78th. I hope Hillary dies at McCain's funeral, and I hope Obama dies of laughter. Fuck politicians; Rot in your own hell. Go America
The best thing about Sen. Gravel is that he tells it how he sees it and doesn't indulge in any two-faced double-talk. And the worst thing about him is the same thing, because most Americans just can't stand frank discussion that isn't just entertainment for the masses.
Normally, it's not a problem for me if people choose to continue to consume lies as long as it affects only their personal lives. But now, these lies KILL people: Afghanistan, Iraq, Katrina ....maybe next Iran and the people in power have a list of additional countries. What's wrong with people??? Supporting Gravel is such a simple act of courage. It could be the start of the end of the nightmares for all of us.
Thats just another reason to vote for him isnt it? But I see your point. I dont care what the poles say, Im gonna vote for who I want, not choose between the best of the worst like they say. Fckn corporate media needs to Die!!
I caucused for Obama and aparently i'll vote for him in November. Still I have to admit I expected more from him there. "Troops never die in vain" my camouflaged Ranger ass. Go sell that to the pregnant wife of my recently deceased comrade and tell her it was not for oil that their child will be raised an orphan.
You're still my guy, Barack, but once into office you better cowboy up and tell things as they are. And, Sen. Gravel? I salute you for being a punch-packing no-bullshiter. Good job.
"Finally on September 21, 1971, the Senate invoked cloture over Gravel's second filibuster attempt by one vote, and then passed the two-year draft extension. Gravel's attempts to stop the draft had failed(not withstanding Gravel's latter claims that he had stopped or shortened the draft, taken at face value in some media reports, during his 2008 presidential campaign)."
Plus, Gravel doesn't have loony, conspiracy theorist followers who spam every fucking video they can, spam message boards, and spam polls. Gravel isn't afraid to get mad. There was a time when Ron Paul actually had balls when it comes to debating. But these days he's gone soft. Look up the 1988 Morton Downey Jr. episode with Paul in it.
Do you know anyone who's been drafted recently. NO. That's because Mike Gravel ended the Draft in this country.
You know who risked his ENTIRE career and potential time in jail for the American people? Sen. Mike Gravel, when he put the Pentagon Papers into the public record.
You don't have to like him, but Mike Gravel is NO Coward. Compared to Mike, Ron Paul is the coward.
Everyone talks about the "Ron Paul Revolution." Well, I got news for ya: Ron Paul's about as revolutionary as the LP! And they've been around for over 30 years! Who flocks to Paul? Mostly young, middle-class to wealthy, college-age libertarians who don't understand the complexities of politics or the market. Mike Gravel does! He's a lot more revolutionary than Paul. You could find a bazillion people just like Paul in the LP, I'm sure. But you can't find many Gravel Democrats anymore.
Candidates NEVER need or should take money (or be allowed to) from entities like corporations! Corporations already have enough power! If you're pro-corporation, fine, whatever. But you don't need to take a bunch of donations for it. And corporations don't need to put you in their pocket like kind of puppet.
Okay. I really want to know something: Which of you lives in a state that is holding a primary Feb. 5th? Are you registered to vote? And are you gutsy enough to vote for Gravel, knowing very well how he's currently doing in the polls? People who won't/can't vote need not reply. He'll have my February vote, but will he have yours?
The Democrats are idiots for allowing corporate interests to drive out this fine man. He would have been a far superior president to anybody else.
Instead you have the three main candidates with constituencies dumb enough to believe they are anti war when they never stop speaking the language of war.
Ron Paul is the only hope left. Anybody else will be the end of America. Another bad President and any love left for you will be gone so wake up!
Hey everyone, please help us spread the word about the donation day for MIKE GRAVEL on January 1st! Help us gain the funds and attention necessary for Gravel's voice to be heard! Please share and DONATE! Thanks!
Dennis K proved that hes not fit to lead the US. He stood silent while Gravel was excluded from the debates, then what happens? Dennis K is now excluded. Gravel never stays silent, we need a leader like that, someone who will stand up for the people and morals. Gravel 08!
Ron Paul, Gravel, and Kucinich bring me to tears. 1.) because they would save the world. 2.) because they are polling at the bottom of the barrel. i pride myself on being more hopeful than "practical" when "practical" means murder, but let me just suggest that if these guys want to take power, they have to combine forces. each of them have a relatively small but intensely passionate following. they could amass unprecedented grassroots momentum together.
Gravel is the only politician in these elections with any integrity whatsoever, and the US media just make him out to be some crazy old guy, marginalizing him at every opportunity. Shame on them.
"Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune."
zstowasser: Dennis Kucinich is PRO illegal immigration! Ron Paul and Gravel would do well distancing themselves from him. Why do you think McCain is doing so poorly in the polls? = IMMIGRATION.
illegal immigration wouldn't be such a big issue if we didn't have such a monetary mess. Ron Paul acknowledges this. Because of inflation, US Labor is much more expensive than labor in China. We must return to sound money (backed by gold/silver). I like Ron Paul's idea of having an alternate currency circulating next to the worthless fiat paper money made by the private federal (not!) reserve banks.
its really sad how shocking it is to hear a candidate this passionate and fresh about his policies, cause we're so used to watered down glossy LIES from other politicians.
If the US reduced its' military power significatnly, the standard of living would drop significantly for those in many nations around the world. At 77, you would think he would have at least an ounce of wisdom.
And that's our duty? Not that it's correct in the least... we breed our own hatred the world over.
How about we increase OUR standard of living. If we didn't waste money on military presence in 120 countries we could afford universal healthcare, better education, and a less violent society. Militarism breeds violence and hostility. Here and abroad.
The RICHEST country in the world can't afford universal healthcare? What 2 industrialized nations don't have universal healthcare? The USA and... South Africa. And South Africa only ended apartheid less than 2 decades ago and has extreme, extreme poverty.
It's pathetic the US doesn't have universal healthcare. You want productivity? Educate your people and keep them healthy. Or blow all your money on oil, nukes, and war.
A nation with a 9 trillion dollar deficit is not a rich nation. Universal Healthcare is the biggest joke in the world. I don't want shitty healcare service by the government and I don't want to be forced to pay for it through taxes. The private market is the only place you find innovation.
How does the private market encourage innovation? Health insurance companies don't want new technologies in the current system; that would mean there were more procedures and treatments that they would be obligated to perform. It's in their interests to deny care because it increases their profit margins. The only "innovation" is new random medication that they can tell people they need.
I'm from the UK, but wow, if this guy was president of the US I think I might come live there. He must be the only politician that actually thinks of the people. Everything he talks of is simply common sense, and yet it seems shocking to so many. I think people should be embarassed voting for Clinton when there's the option of Gravel.
The fact is, Mike Gravel angered powerful people when he confronted Senator Clinton over Iran during last month's debate. Up to that moment the Clinton juggernaut was rolling over everyone. Now Mike is paying the price for speaking truth to power.
They wouldn't want people to actually vote for someone they believe in! Instead they want to herd us into supporting their pre-selected, corrupt, corporate-backed choices.
Fresh on the heels of MSNBC's exclusion of Senator Mike Gravel from last week's Philadelphia debate, we now hear that CNN has cut the Senator from its November 15 debate in Las Vegas. Like MSNBC, CNN's justification comes down to one ugly factor: MONEY.
Make sure to donate to Mike Gravel's campaign on Tuesday October 30th to protest his exclusion from the Democratic debate and fire up his campaign! Pass the word along to anyone who believes that truly real and honest voices are vital to an open democracy!
If you're grateful that those dear to you have live without fear of being drafted into unjust wars, thank Mike Gravel. His courage helped end the draft during Vietnam, and he will end the war in Iraq.
Paul gets my vote, but this would be a welcome change in the tone of American politics. What the HELL are you Democrats waiting for? What the hell is your problem that you can't see the opportunities you have for real change?
I'm registered republican to vote for Ron Paul, but I certainly wouldn't be disappointed in mike becoming president, and if it's gravel vs some other stupid republican I'll certainly be supporting him.
This is a great video. I sincerely hope that Gravel will win presidency, and I am trying to make Gravel more well-known (I am doing a get-to-know Gravel campaign by walking around my area and talking to people). I need to publish my book before the primaries.
thank god for this man. i feel sorry for people who think he is a waste of a vote. how will americans ever bring about change if we keep on supporting corporations and their agendas (obama, clinton, edwards, guiliani?
Mike Gravel is my ideal candidate, but I think Paul and Kucinich should be at least acceptable for any Gravel fans. They have a better shot at actually winning the election so, if Mike doesn't make it at least there are a couple to fall back on.
Every Time I watch another Mike Gravel Video... I cry a little bit inside. This great man may not see the white house - but the hell if I'm not going to do everything in my power to help him anyway.
I feel what your saying. I wish every American had the same passion to step up. I am tired of the people electing the same candidates but with different names. Gravel is actually different, he is actually saying something. If only everyone would listen...
Maybe your obsession with perfection and image is one of the reasons a true hero like Gravel or Kucinich can't get anywhere in the media/polls - because they don't have millions, they don't have people pampering them.
They're REAL individuals. Just as the creator of this video. We all have flaws. Stuff gets pretty messed up when we forget that
gravel needs something pretty drastic to push him up the polls now....and he is being kept out of the AARP!!! that sucks....obama says he is scared of gravel on the jon stewart daily show
Of course there is a choice for progressives. His name is DENNIS KUCINICH. I like a lot of things Gravel has said, but he's often inarticulate and makes some questionable faux pas in speaking about some topics that make me wince. I want to like him, and I do much of the time, but not as the next president of the United States.
Terrific video. I'm always impressed (among a hundred other reason) at how Mr. Gravel needs no prompter.............because HE'S LIVED THE HISTORY and has the experience.
juleofdenial is right, it barely matters who you vote for - that's already decided. It's who has the money. So give your $20 and make a real difference.
Guliani in the Fox News debate, LIED, then fox news made him look like a leader for his LIE! during debate he said he never heard such an obsurd reason for 9/11, then turned around afterward and said to hannity, saying It was the exact thing the Saudi prince said that it was our forign polocy, then Fox ran him as a leader that whole morning and day.
imagine if america truely forgot about this republican and democrat shit and just voted for the most honest guy to be the president, the states would truely be unstoppable,
Here's my theory. He'll bullshit America all he wants in order to get elected. I know, I know, it sounds crazy. Candidates rarely do that. I'm just saying, he may talk a big talk, but won't do shit in the White House.
I know, I know. That rarely happens. Clearly he's America's only hope. Don't listen to the sane person. Go back to what you were doing.
lol....funny....its like having a stale slice of pizza and deciding all pizza in the world in stale.....(though in this reference most are stale, lying sellouts..) mike gravel just has a record and a history of putting himself on the line to tell people the truth(when he WAS in a position of POWER)....do some research
It's a good thing that most of the Democratic Candidates want to legalize Marijuana. Hillary Clinton wants to "rid the prisons of non-violent offenders" and has mentioned the legalization of Marijuana, as has Bill Clinton. Mike Gravel seems like a good guy. I'm not sure who I like best; Gravel, Clinton or Edwards.
Anyone with a conscience, who is paying attention and outraged, can only vote for either Kucinich or Gravel--simply b/c they are the only two telling truths. The rest have conflicts of interest, looming corruption investigations or suspect corporate ties.
You are so right. NOW is the time to support this outstanding candidate. I have never been so supportive of a Presidential candidate as I am for Mike Gravel. Donate now. Save this country.
Keep it up. Make more of these. Send them to all your friends. Great video. Gravel is really relying on us, in a way that none of the other corporate sell-outs are, to get his message out. As you said, if you want someone to take our voices to the halls of power, we need to make it happen!
Gravel has made me interested in politics again. He's the only candidate saying anything. If we let Gravel slip under the radar unnoticed, future generations are going to be wondering what the hell we were thinking.
I want with all my heart for Gravek and/or Kucinich to win the candidacy and ultimately the presidency. It CAN happen. It seems very unlikely but if we all vote our heart it can happen.
DONATE $20 bucks to Mike Gravel now so he can get funding. And email the AFL-CIO webmaster @ aflcio . org and tell this if they keep Gravel out of the debates they will get NO solidarity from us and good luck with Hillary.
While Mr. Gravel might have been a good politician in his younger days, there is something missing now. Perhaps it's just his age. At 77 he might not even make it 4 years. In the debates all he does is tear the other candidates down but offers no alternative plans. John Edwards is the honest and most detailed candidate on all the issues. Thanks for sending this video but it hasn't changed my mind at all.
I'm sorry but if you can't figure out any of the alternative plans from this video your not to bright I'm in High school and just from the video I was able to catch 4 things. Edwards is like any lawyer a BULLSHITER. Gravel is the only person who calls it how it is.
sooo he lost hahahaha

I like Mike Gravel! We need a movement to push these issues forward and to not let up!
Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul should be teaming up to lead the new revolution!
zstowasser 4 years ago
zstowasser: Dennis Kucinich is PRO illegal immigration! Ron Paul and Gravel would do well distancing themselves from him. Why do you think McCain is doing so poorly in the polls? = IMMIGRATION.
katyu16 4 years ago 2
illegal immigration wouldn't be such a big issue if we didn't have such a monetary mess.

If the US reduced its' military power significatnly, the standard of living would drop significantly for those in many nations around the world. At 77, you would think he would have at least an ounce of wisdom.
Eppenrose 4 years ago
And that's our duty? Not that it's correct in the least... we breed our own hatred the world over.
How about we increase OUR standard of living. If we didn't waste money on military presence in 120 countries we could afford universal healthcare, better education, and a less violent society. Militarism breeds violence and hostility. Here and abroad.
Stop and think.
PeaceCzar 4 years ago 3
We would never be able to afford universal healthcare. Socializing it would only produce stagnation to this country.
jhoprunner 4 years ago
The RICHEST country in the world can't afford universal healthcare? What 2 industrialized nations don't have universal healthcare? The USA and... South Africa. And South Africa only ended apartheid less than 2 decades ago and has extreme, extreme poverty.
It's pathetic the US doesn't have universal healthcare. You want productivity? Educate your people and keep them healthy. Or blow all your money on oil, nukes, and war.
PeaceCzar 4 years ago 2
A nation with a 9 trillion dollar deficit is not a rich nation. Universal Healthcare is the biggest joke in the world. I don't want shitty healcare service by the government and I don't want to be forced to pay for it through taxes. The private market is the only place you find innovation.
jhoprunner 4 years ago 2
How does the private market encourage innovation? Health insurance companies don't want new technologies in the current system; that would mean there were more procedures and treatments that they would be obligated to perform. It's in their interests to deny care because it increases their profit margins. The only "innovation" is new random medication that they can tell people they need.
aluminumpenguin8 4 years ago
If you don't think the private market produces innovation then I really can't even debate with you. Read a John Stossel book or something.

I'm from the UK, but wow, if this guy was president of the US I think I might come live there. He must be the only politician that actually thinks of the people. It's clear that Democrats in Nevada want to hear from Mike Gravel. Now he needs your help.
If 80 people just give . . .
$250 -- We can secure a spectacular Alternative Debate venue.
$100 -- We can stage and promote the entire event.
$50 -- We can plaster Las Vegas with 5,000 posters supporting Mike's fight against corporate censorship

The fact is, Mike Gravel angered powerful people when he confronted Senator Clinton over Iran during last month's debate. Up to that moment the Clinton juggernaut was rolling over everyone. Now Mike is paying the price for speaking truth to power.

CNN says Mike Gravel must meet three criteria:
* Form a federal exploratory committee and officially declare his candidacy. (He did.)
* Poll at 1% or above. (He does.)
* Raise at least $1 million in individual contributions since January 1, 2007. (He has not.)
Once again, MONEY decides who gets to participate in America's political debates.

Everyone that wants Mike Gravel to win, follow these steps.
1) Register as a Democrat so you can vote for him in the primaries. Do it NOW!
2) Email your friends everyday with YouTube segments.
3) Print flyers and post them everywhere in your neighborhood.
4) Know the rules of your state pertaining to electing the Democratic Candidate

Maybe your obsession with perfection and image is one of the reasons a true hero like Gravel or Kucinich can't get anywhere in the media/polls - because they don't have millions, they don't have people pampering them.
They're REAL individuals. Just as the creator of this video. We all have flaws. Stuff gets pretty messed up when we forget that

Thanks for sending this video but it hasn't changed my mind at all.
sportydave61 4 years ago
I'm sorry but if you can't figure out any of the alternative plans from this video your not to bright I'm in High school and just from the video I was able to catch 4 things. Edwards is like any lawyer a BULLSHITER. Gravel is the only person who calls it how it is.
