No one in the Christian or Republican hates gays, we love them and want to save their souls so they don't go to hell, just read your Bibles; "If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:13), or (Leviticus 18:22) and even countless other passages clearly show where God stands on this. All we can hope is that he finds God and saves his sould before its to late.

It's hard to say, but it sounds like he had been entrenched in the Republican Christian ideology for so long that he bought into the idea of it being a choice, and that if he worked to fight it the feelings would go away, because he was afraid of losing his career, his friends, etc. Unlike so many other Republicans recently, he's actually decided to stop lying to himself.
