Johnny sung many tunes about women; Gina, Maria, Misty, Sunny, (Bye Bye) Barbara, Evie, & Aubrey which is also on the Arianna album "Killing Me Softly With Her Song" (1973). Both cuts, "Aubrey" and "Arianne" are tender songs that never charted the Top 40... yet should / would have if released earlier. The album dropped with the same title (except changing "his" with "her") as Roberta Flacks #1 Gold Hit which was 5 weeks #1 and 13 weeks Top 40. So... Johnny's title & rendition were "covers."
What a love song should be...a telling of a story as only the great Johnny Mathis can do. Beautiful...gives me goosebumps....in the middle when he hits those high notes..oh my. Jane in Ohio
from Jose, the Hermeterec.....to mysteryfaze....My dear person, you are so very right. Love....it is the one thing in life that makes living worth while. It is so very often so much easier to settle, to compromise.....for convenience, for security...for appearances...Ultimately, however, the only thing that REALLY matters is love. So very rare...so many of us NEVER find it and it is the only thing in one's life that REALLY matters.
Arianne is a very beautiful song, He says he milks her of her kisses and swallows up her breathing, and taste her where she loves him. It is how a person sings a song that I love and Johnny Mathis always does. He should win an award for this song...
I was named after this song in 1978! I even have a autographed picture an the words to the song!! It's Beautiful and I am proud to have been named after this song!1
I was always told that I was named after the Aaron Neville version of this song-- I had no idea that it was originally written by Johnny Mathis. Interesting.
Those from the NYC area may remember the DJ William B. Williams on WNEW. He used to play this song on a fairly regular basis. To me, the most remarkable thing about JM is his incredible breath control. He must have the largest lungs on the planet.
Not usually my kind of music, but the combination of Johnny's voice and the remarkable, unique metaphorical love images makes this perhaps one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.
The words are so beautiful that I named my daughter after this song. She is a special girl with a beautiful voice and truly deserving of a Johnny Mathis song.
Oliver Swofford, aka Oliver ("Good Morning, Starshine") also recorded this in a beautiful version that is not yet available on CD. What a gorgeous song.
it must be my lucky day i just found what i believe is mathis best song ever yet hardly known by the way aaron neville is the other artist that recorded it its found here on youtube / thanks cyber mathis said that sometimes he would be singing anywhere and some old lady would walk up to him and say damn it that is one sensual song again thanks for this a rare find
Johnny Mathis recorded this song in 1973 on the "Killing Me Softly Album." The Neville Brothers weren't around then. They recorded it in 1994. No, it's some other artist in the 70's, but I can't find who that would have been. It could be Johnny was the original recording artist, but I don't think so. I remember it sounding like someone else (like "Bread," but they didn't record it.)
This is a little known song on his album Killing Her Softly (1973) I personally believe that it should have been made a single. It is sensual and the most descriptive grouping of words that describe one in love.
I never understood why this song was never put out as a single.....I think Mathis would of had a hit with this! I love the way he sounds in this song! This is a real Mathis song!!!
I had given our daughter, at her request, a list of girl's names, from the Bible, when she was expecting her first child. I did that, and insisted she add, "Arianne," as the middle name, to whichever she chose, so she is "Rachel Arianne."
Yes, I never heard of this beautiful name until I ran across this song. (Actually I remember someone else recording it first, so I heard the song on am radio way back when.)
It is wonderful to be reminded of so many recordings which remain as beautifully moving now as the time spent listening hours on end long ago.
The beautiful metaphors of "Arianne" fittingly encased by what I believe is THE album cover {Killing Me Softly, 1973} representing the quintessential embodiment of Mathis to this day ~ uncontrived, elegant, the soaring beauty of body and spirit captured in an unforgettable and haunting profile. The product of that which lies within. Exquisite.

Finally fixed it from the 60's to 70's. Sometimes I absentmindedly rewrite history!

Thanks for the post. One of the most sensual songs ever written, sung and recorded.
Just one thing though. This song was recorded by Johnny in the early 70's (1973) on his album "Killing Me Softly with Her Song".
The photograph above is from the reverse side of his album "Those Were the Days" recorded in 1968.
Thanks again for the post.
