  • judd hirsch is an asshole in real life too. His son Alex is a genius...

  • FUCKING A

  • taxi ruled

  • duh

  • I want to watch the series now. It reminds me of Peter Finch's tirade on the movie Network.

  • Great clip, I will eventually check this sow out!

  • Ever see that Saturday Night Live sketch Conspiracy Theory Rock? It was only aired once and then was cut out of all reruns. If you watch it, I'm sure you can figure out why. It's on YouTube if you're interested.

  • HELL-FUCKING-YES ON BOTH.

  • Obama's speech nearly made me want to take a flying leap from a cliff.

  • Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was the best show on TV. It's a shame that it got canceled.

  • Unfortunately, any lobotomization is probably consensual, as when people drown their sorrows with a bottle. When you give people freedom to do what they like and watch what they like, there is always a risk that they will do and watch what diminishes their capacity to judge.

However, I believe that if we value freedom of thought, we also have to consider that it's not that these people are stupid that bothers us, but that they don't agree with our beliefs.

  • holy crap that title is awesome!

  • Yes and Yes.

The lobotomy has me walking around like a stroke victim.

  • howard beale, is that you?

  • No question in my mind, "LiberalViewer" (whatever that handle means). Much of the public has been lobotomized long ago. But art's not getting its ass kicked, thankfully. It's just not in the limelight.

    Love that rant.

  • wow...you really caught a very interesting social-political rant there. Sheesh, I was at the edge of my seat. It is frightening to note that media is what its name implies. It would appear that its greatest purpose is to keep the consumption ball rolling along. I do not think that those who work in media are fully conscious of who directs media content intent, so I do not see this form of stimuli being reworked all too soon. What will be will be. Thanks for this vid!!!

  • Yes

  • yep

  • if anything these clips have made me want to watch this show now

The truth is we are definitely being lobotomised and save for a few exceptions to the rule art (not just in television but also in other aspects of the so called "Entertainment Industry" such as much and media) is definitely and most sadly getting its ass kicked.

  • boazsachs,

As u may know, this show was, sadly :-(, already cancelled (I made this video more than a year ago now). I notice u can buy the whole series on DVD, tho, for under $50

Thx 4 watching and commenting on so many of my videos :-)

  • to be honest with you i wasn't aware the show had been cut and I simply assumed it never made it out to the UK or was shown on a lesser known cable channel over here. I guess I should have checked the date on your posting. What a shame, it seems like a great concept. I will definitely try seeing some more episodes.

  • Also i'd like to apologise for my million comments. Hadnt had much time to surf youtube recently and was trying to catch up with what i had missed which brought me across one of your clips. I definitely enjoy what you are doing, and leave you with the somewhat cliched (but heartfelt) keep up the good work

  • Yes, and yes.

But like most things in a democracy, any damage done to our lives and our nation is done with our complicity. If I didn't know television was idiotic, then I might be innocent. But once I know that, if I continue to watch then any damage done to me is my own fault.

  • I'm actually inclined to disagree. I suspect advertisers have more influence than the people these days.

  • Yes, they have a huge financial influence over the policy makers and a huge bag of psychological tricks to use on the audience.

I only meant that once I know about the tricks and the crap they cause to be broadcast, then it's my fault if I still sit there and take it.

  • SIR, HELL YES, SIR!

by the way, are you by any chance running for presedent any time soon?

  • Yes and yes. Art is getting its ass kicked, and we are being lobotomized. The entire entertainment industry is geared towards the lowest common denominator, and what are the fruits of this endeavor? Reality shows and Larry the Cable Guy.

  • It's just a cheap copy of the movie "Network"

  • I find the dialog delivery on this show irritating. Its style is exactly like the West Wing (one trick pony?). What I find most annoying about this style of dialog delivery is that every character speaks the same. It is extremely repetitive and goes from somewhat clever banter to nails on a chalkboard.

  • I love that clip and thank you so much for posting it.

  • We are being lobotimized. The Science Schmience skit is great, even though we never got to see crazy Christians. Do we really need to know who the next Pussycat Doll is going to be? Or the next Top Model? Great Video! Studio 60 returns May 24th 10/9c. Tell your friends!! Screw the Cheerleader, Save Studio 60.

  • really no argument to that question

  • Totally agree, and it's sad but we see this all to often with the news. I mean really, MSNBC whic I loved once is now becoming a greedy "Access Entertainment Tonight" network.

  • Great clip! Thanks for posting that! Judd really lays it out there! I'm gonna check out this show!

  • One of the best scenes I've ever seen on TV.

  • great stuff liberalviewer.. 5000 views is kinda decent

  • guys, i just saw that studio60 show for the first time and it's fucking awesome

  • WOW I need to watch that show. I just wish the director didn't cut him off.

  • I stopped watching corporate McTelevision 4 months ago. My brain feels much better.

  • goodonya mate

  • KFC makes much more money than the 21 Club because they're more cost-effective, their operations require minimal expertise so that there can be more of them, and most people haven't been to the 21 Club.

  • Mafiacapo, you can't blame trends in art on the consumer when the average consumer's knowledge of art is circumscribed to only what the media wants them to be aware of. If people were exposed to Mozart's last three symphonies like they were to 50 Cent, everyone would think 50 Cent is a pabulum-peddling, musically illiterate poseur, which he is, but the media would never make a concentrated effort in finding and promoting Mozart-caliber talents because they can't be bought and sold in bulk.

  • Wow, was this REALLY on a major network TV show? That is the straight truth.

  • Liberal V is a Micheal Moore wannabe, He even uses the same delivery. Sad.

  • thesleeper875 is a BillO wannabe.

He even uses the same tactic of not answering the simple yes or no question posed to him, and attacking the messenger instead. Sad.

But hey, go right ahead. Free country, right? And you'll be the dipshit driving his comment rating up. :-D

  • close. looks like they aren't even a nothing.

attacking the very person who takes the time to upload a great vid for all of us to see, wow that is a great way to use their energy. but as you said, the result speaks for itself.

  • OlbermanFan,

re: people driving up my comment rating by insulting me, Shhhhhhhhhhh ;-)

  • we are being lobotomized, as someone said, the consumer sets the standard.but art still thrives...sites like this allow exposure for all the cool shit thats going on small scale, theres just so much of it, that you have to almost be at the right place at the right time to see something new and underground, that is if nobody tells you about it..

almost like a tree falling in the woods with nobody around to hear it.

    explore.

  • wow, excellent video sir.

If the statements you highlighted weren't true, people like me would not be running to youtube to watch videos like yours. that monologue was definitely accurate for entertainment, and frankly for the 24 hours news networks as well. its only be recently that we've seen even a hint of real journalism again. and i applaud it, the comments you've shown here, and you for making this video.

  • Most certainly!

  • Its funny how liberals are always claiming that a liberal-dominated industry is not liberal enough. HAHAHAHAHAHA! Perhaps if we had Noam Chomsky on TV reading quotes from Lenin & Marx you leftist might finally smile.

  • Oh, don't worry about us, bdd. We liberals get plenty of smiles thanks to stuff like the Daily Show, Colbert, Olbermann, etc.

Or we can just read comments like yours, trying to slippery-slope us all into being commies, just because we support a woman's right to choose. :-D

  • Yes, and yes.

I was thinking something like this recently while watching clips right here on YouTube- "ordinary" people are starting to make stuff that's more amusing, interesting and cool than traditional tv and movie makers. Traditional entertainment has become so stale and recycled, it's hard to get excited about anything.

"Art as expression-not as market campaigns-will still capture our imaginations" Rush, Natural Science

  • What a crappy tirade. No proof, no conclusions. And commerce can't kick art's ass, because its the consumer that decides the trends in commerce and art, which are often merged to one another. An example would be the music industry. We are being submerged in shallow, mainstream gangsta-rap and pop-emo (or as the bands label themselves as, "pop-punk" -oxymoron lol). And while the music industry does deserve blame, so do the consumers. The consumers define what art and commerce produce.

  • With the advent of cable tv networks struggle to get ratings and viewers which translate to revenue and take very few chances, and stick to what is safe and what works. The consumer is to blame as well for not demanding a better product. Art hasn't gotten it's ass kicked, just pushed around a little.

  • It`s not a question about you being lobotomized.It`s a fact,you are already lobotomized!

  • What the actor says is generally true. But Studio 60 is a TV show. It's not reality. The actor is not really putting his career on the line to make that speech and you're not watching an insurrection. You're sitting in front of your TV drinking beer and saying 'yeah, damn straight!' And then you got to bed.

  • And the next day you go to work at your corporate job with a smug feeling that you are an revolutionary because you watch edgy TV dramas instead of actually fighting for what you think you believe in, which is just too scary.

  • Typical lefty, liberal propaganda whining about how everything is going to pot. Oh wait, I'm a lefty liberal. And Congress, please read some of those reports about how art in school actually helps kids' overall learning. Then restore all of the arts education money you've cut so we can spend 400 Billion on our unnecessary and failing war in Iraq that played right into OBL's hopes to have a war with the west. Nice going.

  • Good work man, thanks for getting me into this show. Nice to see something thought-provoking on YouTube for once.

  • there is so much thought provoking stuff here, if we look for it. the problem is what the majority of people are watching. don't know what to do about that. but things like this do help ~ THANKS from Japan!

  • THANK GOD

  • Yes, the media is complicit in lobotomizing all viewers. But so is the pharmaceutical industry with the availablility of Zoloft and Prozac. Wonder why there is no outrage by the people of this nation as their rights and freedoms are systematically legislated away, or their sons and daughters are slaughtered in a distant war with no clear purpose, or how the American public can sit and watch "American Idol" while the president breaks the law and undermines every treaty made since World War II?

  • Youtube, Art, Media, the White House, American life have ALL been lobotimized.

When our pResident needs to spend 1.2 Billion a year in fake news, requires IMMUNITY to War Crimes proceedings (sounds very Survivor-esque, huh?), and the country is hip-hopping towards a great new era of Fascism...

  • weell. that wasnt a fake tirade, at all. great post libby =P and to the question: see billo. i think this has become a war against integrity, and true journalism.

  • You're getting you're ass kicked by the idiot box lol.

  • Yes. The error is bait.

  • They skirted the issue- were is the skit, art is getting it's ass kicked on conventional media, it's been homogenized, thank god for youtube.

  • Television Networks are just like any other company. They go to what generates the most amount of money. So when art is created by the private sector, art is only second fiddle to cash.

  • as an artist with a sore rear end, I thank you for this video. come see the trailer for the film i can't get anybody to take.

  • I'm as mad as hell....oh wait :). Well I have fear that the mass media is lobotomizing those who are weakminded but isn't that the way it's always been.

The weak are easily manipulated, the mob rules. I still have hope there are enough smart people to move the mob in the right direction. Am I digressing?

  • My TV has been off for 4.5 years.

There's some good stuff on it. This is an example, surely. But it's also hypnotizing. People let it do their thinking for them. You know that's true; if advertising didn't sway thought and behavior, commercial TV would collapse. Best thing for democracy would be to leave the damned things off.

  • disagree! but don't let it do your thinking for you! like the government...

"when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security." --Thomas Jefferson: Declaration of Independence 1776

  • You think art is getting it's ass kicked by the corporate media? I think each and everyone of us, our children, and our grandchildren are getting our asses kicked by the corporate media.

  • i think that this was one of your best videos. keep them coming.

  • Crazy Christians? Would that be the church goers in favor of TORTURE?

  • Who would Jesus torture???

  • lol

  • In the battle between art and commerce...

    YOUTUBE is winning!

  • art= ass kicked

  • I enjoy all your videos.

  • I love what it is you do here.

  • This should be shown next to the Howard Beale "bullshit" speech in "Network". Excellent work. Commerce dictating facts.

  • jmarquiso,

Actually, one of the characters made an explicit reference to Paddy Chayefsky's "Network" when describing Judd Hirsch's rant in the show. Otherwise, it night have been a rip off instead of an "homage" ;-)

    Thx 4 comment :-)

  • Oh no, I got that. I missed the first episode (which I hope to watch on NBC dot com soon), but did catch the second. There are direct references, much like there are also direct references to Lorne Michaels and SNL.

  • I'm mad as hell, and I'm NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!

  • here:

    www youtube com/watch?v=FCwwRJtTJfA

from MisanthropeMojo; the meltdown scene, the 'b Three scenes, the 'bullshit' scene, and of course the 'mad as hell' scene. "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore douchebags!"

The closest Howard Beale moment was David Brinkley just before he retired.

    classic!

  • eligarf,

Thx for the URL. I added it to my favs. I love that movie. I also really liked Paddy Chayefsky's great SF book Altered States that got made into an OK, pretty trippy movie

Thx 4 the comments too :-)

  • there is also the one where he rants on live tv about shutting off the tv's but i can't find it, so here are two vids about the FCC

    henry writes a letter

    http //www youtube com/watch?v=4l4fNm4QReY

    FCCFU

    http //www youtube com/watch?v=fzaqXFcsH2U

  • Art is getting its ass kicked if you look at "art" in the traditional (theatre) or even semi-traditional (television) sense. But the new Art (gee, right here on youtube) is kicking everyone's ass.

Of course, as the lonelygirl15 saga demonstrated, whenever ass-kicking is occurring without commerce and industry, industry will find it. There's money to be made with YouTube; and its only a matter of time before commerce kicks art's ass here too.

  • gt95stang,

Actually, despite what the Hirsch/Sorkin rant said, I'm not sure art and commerce are in an either/or struggle. Commercial concerns can certainly kill art, but there's no reason art cannot be profitable

    Thx 4 watching :-)

  • Liberal,

You said 'theres no reason art cannot be profitable'. Good point, but the thing is, arent TV networks making more profits from crap programming?

Art is profitable but if you can sell a piece of Turd instead of Gold and make MORE profit off the Turd, what would you sell?

PS... Ive been trying to get Turd into a comparison for AGES! lol

  • I agree with you here - it was my original point. Commerce is, actually, the measure of art. THe problem, as Hirsch says (and Beale says) - is when we create art in ORDER to please (ratings) and that alone. As Beale said, "We tell you lies about everything, why? To get you to like us."

  • In every city in the country, run-down areas become spontaneous communities for artists, writers, and musicians (cheap rent). Then the areas become hip (think SoHo), and soon fall prey to the more Mammon-centric folks. So the artists scurry off to find a new warren. The same will be true for Youtubia. If it gets taken over by the moneymongers, it will still live on, somewhere, somehow, perhaps not in name, but in spirit.

  • Oh, the jury's already rendered the verdict as far as I'm concerned.

5 stars. For the clip, Judd Hirsch, Aaron Sorkin, whoever wrote that dialogue, and anyone watching it that knows exactly what he's talking about.

  • my15minutes,

Not many TV series can deliver that much truth before the opening credits of the 1st episode

Of course, the show itself contradicts its message that there's nothing good on TV :-)

thx for supporting my videos :-)

  • This would seem an opportune time to point this out.

The reason TV is now filled with 2 things: Reality Shows and Game Shows.

The Writer's Guild strike a few years back.

  • They had to fill their schedules with shows that didn't need a writer.

And voila. Most Americans didn't even notice the difference.

If you think it's a problem, do what I do. Don't watch goddamn Reality TV. Or game shows. Except Jeopardy.

  • my15minutes,

Some of us noticed the difference. The writer is the #1 ingredient in a great TV show. There's a new show called "Brothers and Sisters" that has a bunch of great people but, so far, I don't really like it b/c the WRITING is mediocre.

That's why I'm a fan of Stephen Bochco, David Kelly, Aaron Sorkin: the WRITING

I do watch one reality show (tho it's pretty scripted ;-)

But, usually, when I watch TV, I'm looking 4 GOOD WRITING.

    Thx 4 agreeing :-)

  • I'd add one more: too many viewers who are content to watch whatever crap is in front of them rather than turn the damned thing off. And many who do turn it off never let the networks and their precious advertisers know why they did it.
