  • @vansdrumming Randy i have been struggling with the pedal slide, what is the best tension to have on the pedal.

  • @petebuckoke I keep my springs at about 3/4 of the way tight. It is all personal preference as there is no right or wrong. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Im glad u didnt have your socks off lol

  • thanks, Jack Bauer xD

  • How do I get your DVD or downloads? Sorry I may be a drummer but I am not the best computer guy. LOL. I have never picked up so many cool tips and ideas and fills etc as I have from vansdrumming. I wish I knew about you years ago!! Thanks so much for your videos.

  • @vansdrumming Thanks so much. Any problem that I live in Canada? I might buy some of your sticks as well. I mean if I have your sticks then I can play like you and then I won't need your lessons.......just kidding! Us canadians are weird.......EH.

  • @jordanjcm We ship all over the world. Not a problem. Yes, my sticks will make you play just like me. Ha Ha. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • yeah i use the same technique its really cool and gets ur speed up after a while. cool tip thanks!

  • i much prefer the ol in out my self

  • i slide down when i do this

  • i am a beginning drummer so i'm no expert, but my guess is that for the double hit the weakness in the foot would be trying to come back after the first hit....i think the slide technique lets you get tjhe first hit, get your foot out of the way so the pedal can slap back then you hit it again on the slide up.

in other words, the pedal rebound will be much faster than anyones foot after the first hit, so you hit it, during the slide the pedal rebounds then you hit it again

  • most drummers underestimate the heel down technique, i think that you can get faster then heel up with it

  • @rubynl

But can a drummer do double pedal effect on a single pedal with the heel down?

  • yes, and if you do it better with heel up you can use heel up only for that :D

  • That depends on the player, heel up players use the rebound of the pedal to gain speed whereas heel down players rely on their ankle muscles to gain speed which loses power in the stroke

  • Yes thats true. I now use heel up with pedal slide for normal drumming, but for double bass beats and shuffle beats i use heel down, it gives me more speed(the pedal slide is faster for doubles but not for triples or more) and shuffle beats(heel down gives me a more precise timing and control of volume)

  • nope, the fastest double bass is always done heel up. You move your foot farther back on the pedal so a slight twitch of the ankle registers a hit. Its a matter of leverage right. Loosen your springs and tighten the bass head.

  • Maybe, but I can't do triple strokes heel up. Heel down I can. But maybe thats just me.

  • this is the best way to do it for sure

  • why do you own sooo mcuj

  • i play heel up mostly but its good to learn all techniques heel toe is easier this sliding

  • you can use the heel toe technique...it btr and easier than this.

  • no. fail.

  • to b exact, MUCH easier than this.

  • The website is back up and running for DVD and Download purchases.

    Thanks for your patients. RVP

  • mmm isnt that the normal or "classic" way yo do it???...

  • Yep.

  • nice socks

  • lmao

  • after you with the heel of my foot on the pedal that follows? I have to give back to the pedal but without the heel or

  • is that a Tama - Iron Cobra ?

  • DW 5000

  • which is better? -

    Heel toe? or Slide?

    hmmm????

  • Don't worry about it, your body will develop it's own technique, I don't use either method.

This is the video I used to get my speed up: /watch?v=kGzwg6q4wzM&feature=channel_page

  • I guess the right answer is to feel what suits you best, but I think the slide is best, overall.

  • should i get a DW 9000, DW 5000, or Pearl Eliminator, i know it is personal preference but i just want to hear what anyone else would get

  • Why do you play the pedal without shoes? Is it more practical like that?

  • I don't always. I can slide around it better in my socks. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • accelerator or turbo? which ever why did u choose that one over the other?

  • how loose do u keep ur springs on ur pedal ?

  • They are about 3/4 of the way tight. Very springy. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Thanks, first video Ive come across that explains clearly - I'll have a go tomorrow! At times when the neighbours are awake...

    Well done!

  • really cool ;) thank you :)

btw: is that an iron cobra? it really looks like one :)

  • DW 5000

  • thank you :)

  • The 5000 is better than the iron cobra, in my opinion. It's got better control.

Great tutorial. I always use the heal toe technique, but I might try the slide now because of how easy you make it look to do a triplet on the kick.

  • That's who you remind me of . . . MARK SUMMERS!

  • your name is so funny

  • I agree with that statement

  • me too

    lolzerz

  • he reminds me of dan marino...

  • LACES OUT!!!!

  • great tip. I was watching a video from Mike's lessons and he was explaining how to do double bass with the bass pedal and floor tom. But when he played it to speed it didn't look like he was playing it the way he said how to do it (or he was just F'n fast). Maybe if you have time you can watch it and comment on it. Thanks again for the tip.

  • do u guys face the prob of the second note being louder than the 1st? I wonder if it's possible to get both notes equally loud...

  • Triggers! : )

  • What particular pedal are you using Randy? Just curious because using my old Lud S.K. the foot board is just smooth enough I can farily easily side my foot, but on my newer chain drive pedal the foot board has such deep grip grooves on it, it can be a bit sticky toquickly slide my foot around on. I don't think I have yet seen a completely smooth foot board on any pedals. I have had to learn to play heel down and get some speed that way which for me has helped me a ton in being able to be quicker

  • DW's and Tama Iron Cobra. Both have deep grooves. Try playing w/ smooth bottom shoes. RVP

  • I seem to sometimes do doubles unintentionally, but I can't figure out if I'm just lucky, or it's my wacky electronic kit pedal.

  • man when i slide, i slide down the pedal board.... yeah i dont know either, but it works lol. it just came natural. i thought i was sliding up and then i looked and i was like wtf? hah sliding up the board isnt a natural movement for me?

  • Hey, whatever works for ya. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • He is an amazing drummer. The best there is? Not sure about that but he is amazing. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • i refer to play flat footed on the bass drum but if i need the double i lift the heel and move forward much like you do, great vids BTW.

  • that was so fucking cool!

  • god forsake thats damn good

  • My god, you're good.

  • Thanks Van, That helped alot.

  • Van is great and sick

  • Hi... great job !

I have a DW5000 but is hard to slide my foot and control the rebound of the pedal (my foot size is 12)...

    1) You use your pedal very tight ???

    2) The best slide is behind/forward or the contrary ???

    Thanks

  • this is how demonstration vids should be done, so many vids are just ego trips, good shit bro!

  • ive always played flat footed and still been able to get the double thing (i infact find it easier doing fast bass with a flat foot)

only recently have i started playing with my whole leg because it gives a much more powerful sound

hes right, there is no right or wrong, play the technique that feels right for you

  • I want to get a good double bass pedal cus i suck this technique, know any good pedals?

  • I´ve got my double bass pedals from sonor... they´re very good!! got no problems

  • Im getting a Sonor drum kit in afew days.

Its good to know there a reliable brand.

  • Thanks a lot Van i've always wondered how to do the pedal slide and it looks easier to do than the double toe. i've been watching ur vids all day here in Jamaica

  • There is no right or wrong. Whatever technique works for you. RVP

  • i use to use the heel-toe techn, but it is a hell of alot easier to use pedal slde, cheers for that!!

  • i use the same technique and love it...trust me he knows what hes talking about...

  • yo this video gave me mad help....

  • nice vid~ i like how he dosent play in the begining with both pedals he does with one.

  • damn i usually play with heel down, whenever i play heel up, i always go too fast. so i dunno, really depends on the song and situation

  • great video~

  • idk what it is, but i don't have to slide my foot at all. i guess my ankle is just really fast because i could do that since i first started drumming. anyway, great videos. :D

  • hey, ive been practicing this technique n i noticed that its easier with just my sock on, not my shoe... n ive seend a bunch of videos n everyone is playing with no shoe... so... when u play live.. do u do it with shoes??? cuz i cant do it as fast... great video btw

  • A lot of times I play with no shoe. It is much faster. RVP

  • great technique I'll try that later, thanks.

  • Extreme Drum Set Techniques DVD Release Date Now Posted at... vanzdrumming dot com

  • check out the axis long boards. Amazing double bass speed!

  • lol axis along with trick i heard are great, but expensive as HELL

  • thank you sooo much Van ... I watched all ur videos and Improved a lot because of you Thanks

  • finally a drummer who posts techniques on youtube are actually correct. Nice drumming man.

  • Told you, you were a legend hahaha thats amazing from Tarrant in australia keep posting

  • hey man.. you're great drummer and professor !!!

I have a basic 320 mapex pedal, because I'm taking lessons to 2 months ago.... Do You think that I should get another better pedal for doing that doubles ???

    Thanks from ARGENTINA !

  • It all depends. I don't know of that pedal but you may be able to experiment with the spring adjustments to see if it will work for you. Try different tensions and see what you get. RVP

    vanzdrumming dot com

  • alright thanks and another question should i get another pedal mines jus the stock

  • What is your pedal? RVP

  • hey how tight is ur spring on ur pedal

ive tried doin that and i cant its either my pedal is crap or the spring is too loose or tight

  • About 3/4s of the way tight. RVP

  • From Honduras.. THANKS!

  • the slide technique is good but i try doing it with shoes on and it really hard because of friction...

  • Try it without shoes. I play it with shoes on but maybe they aren't as grippy as yours. RVP

  • Good info. thnx

  • dude i have that china

  • oh righty

  • for the fills were you combine double bass and toms like really fast.... how do you do them?? kinda what metal band drummers use... i wonna learn it, it sounds awesome???

  • Watch Double Bass Quads on my Channel. RVP

  • you're a genius

  • this is so hard for me to do... my foot stays stuck lol so its hard for me to slide it like that...=\

  • Are you wearing shoes? Try just socks. RVP

  • Lol, i play at my church lol but i will try

  • Hey... they'll never know. RVP

  • haha

  • if you play heel down, then I think the heel toe technique is perfect for that... but if you play heel up like van then this slide is better for balance I think.. it also has more power, consistent with playing heel up.

  • Where in Florida?

  • never been to Florida hehe

  • Ok. RVP

  • Thats kool man, Have a quick look at my mini solo see what you think.

  • Nice! Thanks this helps a lot. Do you prefer this to the heel toe technique? I'd think the heel toe technique uses less muscle but it's hard to do if you play heel up that pedal slide is perfect for heel up. I've gotta get that technique down. Thanks for the video!

  • No I don't play Heel Toe. I always play heel up. RVP

  • damn...im geting better every day...because of you....damn.....

  • thank you.

  • A DVD or No DVD? I have had lots of requests for a DVD. If I produced one with the same quality as my Ripping Drummer video and with requests for lessons from you all, would you buy it? RVP

  • awesome, im prettymuch a novice but im sure i can put it to some use

  • I dont have a double bass pedal. I just know that it's much faster than using a single foot. I can't really think of ways to incorporate it using one foot.

  • Of course it is faster. I am not trying to show anyone how to be a speed demon with just one foot. Just how you can do some quick little grooves with it. I will see if I can post something to expand that. If you watch my Drum Kitaddidle video when I play the ride groove and the cowbell groove those are both single foot. Paradiddles with my right foot and left hand. Check it out and try it. RVP

  • Do you think you can teach us a cool groove with that single foot double bass technique? I've been trying to find a way to use it, but it's just not as fast as double bass pedals. Thanks!

  • If you have a double pedal you might as well use it. However, if you wish to play with a tight closed Hi-Hat and maybe open it once and awhile you will need your left foot on it. Play around with it. Get creative. RVP

  • I thought I was the only person who did that...that was cool...now I'm not alone...when I'm usuing a single pedal I sometimes do that...but most of the time I just mess around with my double pedal.

  • That's cool.

  • can sumone help me? i have problems with doing medium short blasts double bass like metallicas 'one' and panteras 'slaughterd' as examples. but i can do fast ones like '11 hour' from lamb of god. wat should i do, i have tightened the spings. and also should i use my legs or my ankles. i have elimnators and play with socks. i have masterd one b4, but cant do it nymore becuase i was practising with 16ths. can sumoone help please.

  • Hey love your drumming skills they're incredible i am 15 and hoping of being a professional drummer one day and your tips are helping me a lot, your a really cool and fresh drummer and you style is the bomb keep up the work

  • Thanks. RVP

  • nice technique...very impressive

Can you do this with the left foot, too?

  • not as good as the right. RVP

  • Awesome man Thank you so much for finally showing me how to do this. I applied your Technique on both feet. I play a double pedal and I was Impressed. thank you for your help

  • I am glad you got something out of it. RVP

  • hahaha...i think people like you are so funny. did it ever cross your mind that he is just showing technique and tips on HOW to do a pedal slide? im sure if he was on a mission to prove shitheads like you wrong on youtube to see how fast he could possibly do it, he would make a video specially made for you, called look i can do this really really really fast! blaaaaah > keep your ignorant comments to yourself. <

  • My drum teacher taught me how to do this by stepping on your toes first, than heel. I can do it that way, and the heel-toe way. I'm going to try this technique monday. The tips are great! Keep them coming! Thanks

  • Hey, find out what works best for you. Everyone has their own style that works. Thanks for the comments. RVP

  • what double pedal is that??? nd wats ur settup????

  • DW 5000. Springn tension about 3/4 of the way tightened. RVP

  • Is that a DW 5000 Accelerator or Turbo? Also, it looks like you are driving the beater into the head. Is this true? I've been having trouble with the beater "dribbling" on the head with 2 different DW pedals, the Accelerator and the Turbo. I'm looking for suggestions how to stop it from doing that.

  • Turbo. What do you have in your bass drum for deadning? I had the same issues until I jammed a blanket up against he beater head. I am using the felt side of the beater.

    RVP

  • Well, I have nothing in my bass drum for deadening. I was going for the wide-open Bonham sound. I love how it sounds, but I want to get rid of the "dribbling" sound. I may have to go with some deadening material. FYI - the head I use is an Aquarian Super Kick I with an Aquarian kick pad.

  • You have to put a pillow in against the head or your beater will most likely bounce and give you a little double hit everytime you hit the kick. RVP

  • Great job, RVP. Very clear and educational. Thanks for posting.

  • hey cool! ill try that somtime

  • I can do that speed with one foot without the slide.

  • Hey, what ever works for you. I had some questions on how I do it. Everyone has thier own thing. To each his own... as they say.
