  • I live in NW Cape. Out by Kismet and Burnt Store. It was a monster about 4pm. I watched porta-potty's flying by like the Wizard of Oz. By 7:30, it was all over. The sun was out, setting, but out. Everyone said, "Goin to Tampa". That became our private joke line. Charley was small, but very, very wicked.

  • I was 5 when hurricane charlie came threw port Charlotte I was alone with my 2 sisters my parent where out and they got hit with the eye of it. It was devastating. not only was i scared I was scarred for life every time theirs a sever storm i have flash backs about hurricane charlie and when i hear the lighting bolts just rumble i get scared and try to cover my ears cause i don't want to listen to it but i always have god with me to protect me. I will never for get that hurricane day

  • I was lucky enough to make it through this. I was in a closet with my moms friends friends step daughter. we both prayed the whole time.

  • I lived in Fort Myers at the time. This was my 1st and LAST Hurricane experience! I moved to Colorado

  • hurricane charley wasnt that bad cuz i was 14 and nothing happened to my house but it was funny cuz my ex across the street had a blowup pool and it got away haha and my trampoline and it got awat too

  • This is one of the best Charley films ive seen and ive seen quite a few. when this storm came through i had just started Murdock Middle and lived in the center of town. i remember hearing the explosions, winds, and the roof coming off and totally freaking out. this video is so true. thank you for putting it out there

  • You are definitely correct with this video. I was in Kissimmee when Charlie came through. 115 mph winds (sustained). I also worked at Disney Resorts at that time. No one expected this hurricane to hit South of Sarasota. Everyone expected it to hit Tampa. Disney resorts and every other hotel around Orlando was at completely booked with residents from Tampa who were trying to evacuate the storm. Little did they know that they were placing themselves in a direct path.

  • we lived in polk county during charlie and all the next hurricanes....we had to move twice!

  • I lived right on the line between Port Charlotte and North Port and was a sophomore at PCHS at the time.We didn't have too much damage, lost our fence and satelite but I had friends closer to the harbor that didn't have power for weeks upon weeks.

  • I lived in Fort Myers at the time and they said it was going for Tampa/S.T. Pete. It comes straight for Fort Myers and Port Charlotte.

  • Man, I lived in Winter Haven Florida during that time, and we stayed right in our house. After all 4 hurricanes went over, Charlie, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne, the worst that had happened to our house, was that we had a few leaks because a few shingles had come off of the roof.

    It was an amazing experience.

  • great video! I lived through this "small hurricane" in Punta Gorda. You caught the essence of the day. I am very surprised this video has not gotten more play. Well done!

  • Im with ya buddy.....Same here Ahhh No big deal...thats what the people i was with were saying,I was slightly concerencd, didnt show it,but the more relaxed they got,the more i pointed out U have to take precautions just incase....Next thing ya know were trapped in a small dark room Me,2 woman & 2 kids...Sittingh,waitting, & Litening. When it was over..I walk outside, Absolute Amazement, like a whole different world. My outlook was different also.

  • welcome to florida lol

  • LOL @ 4:26

To anybody (including you, Frank) that still believes duct tape will save your windows...

PLEASE! Do not waste your time and money on this urban myth. It will not save your windows! Grocery and hardware stores will shove them in your face in these situations and will even tell you that it will help. They pretty much just want your money.

Plywood, Sheet metal or the really, really expensive clear hurricane shutters are the only useful things to save your house.

  • fuck the sunshine palm trees and sunny beaches, this is exactly why i dont stay in coastal areas.they can have it im good right here in the nations mitten that way i dont EEEEVER have to worry about shit like this.where i am the only thing close to a hurricane that can come here is a tropical depression cuz im to far inland :)

  • Totally dig the Mushroom Hunting tune you opened your production with.

  • we were moving closing schedualed on our home in pc on that day. talk about bad luck. couldent move in cuz electric was out.

  • I was in my home in Orlando the night Charley came to visit. Cat 1-2 winds and gusts, and a lot of rain. He rolled right up Interstate 4 and was tracked block to block. Then the winds outside peaked. 90-110mph.

Quickly, everything calmed down. Then the power went out.

It's not the storm itself always, it's the suck that happens afterward. Charley was why there are tons of batteries on sale in every store in Orlando now.

  • i remember this hurricane, i was in florida at the time... really takes me back.. the expression on the womens face at 4.36 is exactly how it feels. brill video.. thanks.

  • i know dude i remember hurricane charlie like it was yesterday i lived in punta gorda florida and during the the hurricane i remember the shelter i was in with my flamily and a small tornado ripped off the roof to shelter which was a junior high school that a few hundered people were in and my family was taken down to the basement and it sounded like a fraight train and bombs going off and after the storm outside, everything was destroyed by the flooding and the destruction from the tornadoes!!

  • oh my god

    are you okay ?¿

nice video and scaryy veryy scary ¡¡¡

    my god ¡¡

    good luck mannn

    belen

  • Very impressive.

  • I'm disgusted at your comments about the track. Your area was under a hurricane warning, much less a hurricane watch, regardless of where the most likely landfall point was.

If you knew anything about tropical systems you'd realize that they wobble and can change track on a moments notice.

Other than that, nicely done video, but don't think of hurricanes as a point on a map.

  • I think "disgusted" is an unwarranted judgement - all of the weather services were talking about Tampa Bay as the "ground zero" hit for Charley - NOBODY thought it was going to hit PUnta Gorda/Port Charlotte -the warnings were insufficient to make people understand where this storm could hit - since Charley, the National Hurricane Center stopped using the line inside the cone of error to represent point of impact. great video - I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention - well done.

  • That's great that you guys followed your insticts-got prepared before it hit even though it wasn't originally going to hit Punta Gorda. Yeah I'm 20 miles away from Tampa and I work in Tampa. I waited all day anxiously. I felt bad because one of my co-workers from Tampa went with her family all the way to Punta Gorda to be her mom and it hit them there.

  • excellent...great footage too
