  • Long time. trying to catch up.

    Keep on YouTubin!

    Kiddsock

  • actually that is a subject i've often wondered about..i do know that the mainsteam media only shows what they want you to see or one side and we all know there 2 sides to every story!!! great job with this video as you delve into a realm people are just starting to figure out!

  • 1st class vlog!

  • Hey there! Cheers! thanks so very much! It's great to hear this for my long rambles.

  • Read about Noam Chompsky.

Im sure he'll give you a very interesting perspective on the media and its influence/role/impact in our society. Lol yes - it is relevant to your vlog; the idea of what news is covered and what isn't and more importantly why.

ps: if not, just watch his movie - "Manufacturing Consent"

  • noted! thanks so much for the referral, I'll give it a look!

  • Livejournal... vaguely familiar name... is that another good resource? thanks for the tip!

  • my news station covers world news so I'm okay for news but my paper has become more local

ps what are you wearing onyour hands.

  • lol! it is actually an extension of my shirt that covers my hands, great for chilly weather, but does look funny in the vid.

  • they never think of little things like that for guys clothes, perhaps they think we like the cold or something?

  • you make a good point.

  • Thanks!

  • I have to agree with cherriezs, it is our responsibility to keep ourselves informed.

Local news if for local events, National news is for what is going on in our nation, they also cover big events around the world.

If your local news had to cut a local story for a national/world story that was covered on the national news 30 mins previously, or was in the morning paper, then people would complain about that story being cut.

meape, the only person that keeps us in a box is ourselves.

  • "the only person that keeps us in the box is ourselves" very true! However, it is difficult to realize when we are being kept in the box or out of the loop sometimes, that is why it is nice for us to watch each others back on keeping everyone informed with discussions like this. :)

    great comment! Thanks!

  • The US gvmt not telling us, cause its easier to control us like this. If they start giving us news from out side the box them we might find out the rest of the world don't like us

  • but that is the media... the media is supposed to be 'the public' check and balance on the gov't hence 'free speech'. We NEED that for the gov't to work.

Is it possible that corps/companies have been slowly gobbling up the media&changed the focus from news to more profit based entertainment? If so, we need to give our full support to the lil' non profit based news that doesn't bow to gov't pressures or financial interests/motivations. maybe demand the same objective view from our current media?

  • I'm really bad with knowing what is going on. I'm at University, and I don't have a TV. And I don't read the newspapers or listen to the radio. So I only actually know what is going on if I go onto a news website, which I rarely do. Or from what people tell me.

  • being away at school does lead the tendency to get stuck in the "University Bubble" and only knowing what's going on there. it happens & is understandable b/c you all are there for a specific reason: classes, papers, finals etc... that is the focus where people are working so hard at. so it is understanable why you can get lost in it. I know I did when I was in undergrad. strangely though, in grad school in AU I had more conversations about worldwide events than in undergrad here, not sure why.

  • Hi,

ever since I heard the rumor that the U.S. are very selfcentered, which is understandable as the country is far more bigger than every european country. But I am delighted that the new media gives a posibility to interested americans like you to share the news from the rest of the world.

    Cheers :))

  • media such as youtube has been a nice way for, I don't know, 'regular' folks(?) to give their thoughts to balance a lot of the sensationalized media that goes worldwide from here or about the states.

    Thanks!

  • VERY good point. I am ashamed of the level of awareness about the rest of the world by my fellow Americans. Whenever I meet someone from abroad I find they are invariably more aware of what happens even here in our own country than the majority of the people that live here. I think that most Americans are really good people but our ignorance and our apathy have gotten us to the point at which we find ourselves today. Inform yourselves people! Bookmark the BBC website. Buy local print media.KTHX

  • fantastic comment! Thanks!

  • It is each individual's responsibility to be informed and not rely on others to spoon feed information to them. Be the center of your learning- doing things such as you are recommending to take an active part in being aware.

  • I completely agree. It is up to us to find the right information and it is also up to us to demand from the media that supplies it to make sure they have all the facts to present instead of just running with a story with half the facts to be the first or to entertain.

  • I agree that the local news is sorely lacking and I do find myself having to use the internet to try and keep any kind of grasp on world events.

I have had absolute fits trying to get stuff to upload lately and then when it does upload, processing takes for bloody ever!

Ramble on dear, I enjoy your vlogs...well all of your vids! Thanks, Grams

  • hey there Grams! nice to see ya again! hope all is well on your end! thanks so much for your comment :)

it is true that there are so many extra steps we have to do to just get the 'news' now a days, it is tough!

  • I just heard about this in my geography class, and had no clue what he was talking about. Apparently it has to do with climate change/global warming. I mean, this is an area of Australia that GETS fires, but not like this. This is extremely intense, and the people who live there, who know how to deal with fires are having a high number of deaths. The fires are SO HOT and SO QUICK that people have gotten caught in the cars trying to drive away. It's definitely sad that the US hasn't heard.

  • interesting you heard about it in your geography class and not from the media or world studies class (or something along those lines). and yes, you are exactly right about what happened over there and why a natural occurrence got so out of control.

  • I like the striaght vlogs. Funny stuff has it's place, but it's also nice to hear from the person behind it too.

But then again, some people are just born to entertain others...

  • yup! everybody has their 'thing' and some are more formal or formatted than others, I like to bounce around since I just do this as a lil' hobby when the mood strikes or if I can make the time. Thanks!

  • No probs. I'll keep watchin :)

  • Its strange you have a very inviting voice,

sorry i know this is off topic but i had to say something : )

  • lol! see response to reizvolldiva... thanks!

  • I know this has nothing to do with what you talked about but I love the sound of your voice. Its very relaxing.

  • thank you! I get this compliment often, it is very flattering! I have no idea what it is about my voice that is different but I'm glad you like it.

    Thanks again!

  • Bushfires are a natural part of history and landscape formation. Do you know what a prairie is? If it didn't get burned periodically, it would be overgrown with deciduous plants and the animals would gradually die off (like the prairie chicken) because of their loss of habitat.

  • very true. bushfires are a natural occurrence in Australia, and very much needed for natures cycle. But these were much more extreme. think of the difference between a windy day and a tornado. wind is necessary, but too much can be damaging.

  • I defiantly heard about the bush fires here in Canada-- right away. We talked about it in Social Studies, and it held the front page of my local newspaper for a couple days.

I'm very surprised to hear about the media "censorship" in local USA outlets. o_o

  • "Censorship" might be a strong word to use in this situation.

  • Thus the quotation marks. O_o

  • censorship: very true... I think 'neglect' is probably a better term, but it's result is not any less damaging in this sense.

  • Yep, everything here in Aus in almost american..lol with tv shows anyhow..Does your mom live australia, is that why u knew? i like how you talk with your hands, it makes vlogging interesting..lol

  • huh? I see my response to this didn't post.

no my mom lives in the states, she saw a very small article in the newspaper mentioning it.

talk with my hands: all the time! I think that is why I LOVED my sign language class in college! I could talk with my hands all I wanted!!

  • Oh yeah, I totally think that the American popular media is trying specifically to keep us bottled up in our own little world and ignorant to events outside our country.

  • I don't know if it is really all that complicated or malicious. Its all about money.. the public is partially to blame. What we watch (to create ratings) is what makes advertisers and the stations money. Unfortunately, that has also spread to the 'news' media. No longer being impartial to money they give/cover what sells. What sells is what the public buys an in return what the public sees...sad isn't it? Not necessarily a conspiracy... just capitalism. A very tragic downfall of the media IMO

  • You're a bit too pessimistic. I personally believe it's more of a twisted reflection of American culture. Cuz in the US, politics and the whole political discourse regarding culture and society are, comparing to other "older" nations, much heavily influenced by the so called "average joes". In another other nation, politicians like George Bush and Sarah Palin, assuming they still have the same public persona as what we see in the US, would never get the chance to become candidates of

  • a major party, let alone winning election. It's not about their politics, their intentionally established "folksy" (or dumb depending on your political leaning) public image would have doomed their career before it even starts. I don't think statistically speaking, Americans are less interested in outside world than any other major nations, a lot of non-Americans are as self-involved as the reddest redneck. It's only because the much stronger influence average joes (some might call them lowest

  • common denominator) exert in US culture/politics that the medias are forced to be more reflective of their view/interest. The mindless shoutfest on Fox news and increasingly, CNN are just products the customers of major media outlet want. Media of other nations have a bigger international perspective because they're influenced more by people who themselves have bigger international perspective. America is messier, dumber and shallower because in America it's easier for people who are messier,

  • dumber and shallower to have their voice heard. It has its pros and cons. But it doesn't mean people in other nations are more interested in stuff that don't affect them directly.

  • LOL! and you call me 'pessimistic'.

I think we agree more than I presented, I've place the common denominator to money, what people buy through views is what the media covers. But I don't think that it is necessarily all due to the 'majority' of folks in the US who determine this.

  • But I do have a question, if 'media of other nations have a bigger international perspective', wouldn't that mean that in a way 'people in other nations are [or may be] more interested in stuff that doesn't affect them directly' ??

  • what I meant was media in other nations are more reflective of opinion of an elite minority who, because of their education and experience, have more international perspective. It isn't a reflection of the general public IMHO.

  • well, I feel like it's a very complicated matter. Kinda like a chicken egg question. Media bias and public ignorance reinforce each other. Which came first? Which serves as the traditional male role in this marriage like relationship? I don't know, it would require more data to quantity it.

  • I gotcha now. It is hard because neither extremes are right huh? Can't have just the elite minority of just international view, speaking over the heads of the general public, and yet only speaking to the general public via sensationalizing media, and not challenging everyone to keep some semblance of a worldview interest is bad to.

I agree! It is all truly mind boggling! Great thoughts! Thanks!!

  • I have to listen to bbc in England- i dont think its the same as worldwide bbc- and its absolutely terrible. Its so incredibly shallow and tends to be western orientated.

Online ive been watching the real news network- but peeps have told me to watch al jazeera. What little ive seen has been much better than the beeb CNN or Fox - to say the least

  • wow! from what little I've heard about al jazeera, it's presented with a negative rep of being run by extremists groups. so I never checked it out. Fox... I am not happy with that channel, it is certainly not worried about even looking remotely skewed... so I find it also just turns the 'news' into entertainment based, makes it hard to trust.

  • Well, I don't think al jazeera is run by extremists. I think it's more of a reflection of what Arab world truly feels about US and US policies in the middle east. Even if it's an extremist mouth piece, it's a true reflection of certain extremist sentiment in Arab society, you may not like it, but it's a fact, it would be beneficial to both sides to understand each other, you don't need to like it or agree with them, but you need to understand there is a reason behind what they do.

  • oh! sorry! it's not that I don't like it or not. I just never checked it out because it was presented as just an extremist news resource. but that is my bad for not following up with it.

I completely agree that the best way to truly understand is to listen to as many perspectives as you can.

  • yeah, for an intellectual and an average joe, I think keeping your mind open is the optimal approach. But, like everything else created by this God who may or may not exist, there is another side to it. Lots of really important historical, political, military and technological changes were spearheaded by boneheaded extremists, at least that's what they were before their view was accepted as mainstream. The kind of mental stamina and dedication often required to swim against the wave often mean

  • that you need to have certain conviction that you alone are right. And that kind of belief and conviction can easily lead to dismissal of any other points of view as wrong, heresy, backward or simply crap. Sure, it's possible that one can be both convinced by his position and open to at least trying to understand other sides. But more often than not, it's not likely simply because we are human beings made up of blood and flesh. Personally, the more I think about those big stuff, the more I feel

  • that the best we can do is to follow our reason/gut/feeling/, whatever you prefer, and hope it's the right course. What's the right way to look at/deal with a problem? We simply don't know, science/history/experience can give us, most of the times, a pretty good estimate, but every once a while, a seemly idiotic position might turn out to be the right one. Individually, we can only hope for the best, plan for the worst and at the same time, enjoy the rest.

  • I love watching her videos...

Any woo I heard it from people talking close by.

  • LOL! those silly people still talking ;) did you hear about that Clive guy? I heard he did a katz marathon recently... ;)

  • A katz Marathon 0.0

    That has to be flattering

  • it is. thank you

  • I'm an Australian and this is my theory.

Since we're such a remote country, both in distance from our major cities and the rest of the world. We tend to absorb as much as we can from the world around us. It's easy to feel isolated from world events otherwise.

I love this country and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else, but in comparison the US, there's not a whole lot going on that's news worthy. I think this has a lot to do with our small and sparse population.

  • Really good thoughts! Thanks for the comment!

  • It's sad that these days the news covers what's happening in Paris Hiltons life and other celebrities like it's major news.

  • perfect example!! because the media has moved from 'news' to entertainment, I think it leaves a real risk of losing our true checks and balances with any politics or worldwide coverage... I don't know if it has been lost with journalistic trends, but we (the public) really need the media to stay factual and informative otherwise we lose our check on what is going on in the world. it is scary!

  • there is a parallel between constant internet users and their knowledge of world events among other things. you cant divide these groups easily, but it is a truism that liberals use the internet more than conservatives, and are therefore more informed. there appears to be from certain media outlets...Faux News, for sure...evidence of deliberate misinformation, and Faux News is for Teevee watchers, not internet users.

we're all just one google away from the facts.

  • I've even found that Google is getting so inundated now that it is hard not to find conflicting information even there!

but you will get that for anything that is remotely 'opinion' based.

  • This is seems to happen often with media. I find that media tends to pick and choose their news to report. Several local stations brag about the local focus. I remember the news mentioning the fires, but the progress of it was rarely mentioned and the memorial was mentioned. The same thing has happened with New Orleans

  • It is weird because the media has moved over to so much 'entertainment' style, it leaves it tough to trust for 'real' news and makes you wonder what we are really missing huh?

  • The BBC tv news gave us some coverage of the events in Aus at the begining but it soon shifted its emphasis back to this obsession it has with the economic downturn(which if you ask me has had a negative impact on the situation).

Would be nice if they told us how things are going for the folk down under now in the aftermath especially for those of us who have pals there

  • Yeah, that is why I also downloaded the Australia radio widget too... just to be able to keep up. It's tough though, one would have to download a million widgets to be able to hit different areas if need be *shrug*

  • thanks for the tip!

  • no worries! glad I could help!!

  • Are you bounty gf?

  • Hey, there.

  • Howdy! LOL! late as usual with my comments, apologies!

hope all is going well on your end Victor!

  • thats why i like following diff news sources on twitter

  • twitter! okay, I've just started on twitter... what news resources do they have there?

  • mikma was here

  • hi mikma! glad to see you are still around!

  • The same sort of thing has happened to my local paper. They thinned it down to pointless rambling about cattle drives and other useless information. I found out about the fires the same way you did, which is really disappointing.

  • yeah. it's up to us I guess to search out other media resources to get worldwide news.

  • Get Firefox or Google Chrome. Internet Explorer is horrible.

  • you know, I realized editing through this that I said IE... but I actually use Firefox and have been for almost a year now *shrug* not sure why I mentioned Explorer... habit maybe? does Firefox have more news stuff than IE??

  • erm... news stuff? I don't get your question...

  • lol. sorry... was so focused on the media/news stuff with all the comments I thought your advice was media related. my bad :P

  • Kat...I am shocked too.

This is news to me as well

    wow. just wow.

  • glad to be able to let you know! Thanks for the comment!

  • And thank you for actually taking the time to respond back, unlike alot of people who do not.

And you are welcome, as always.

  • no problem!! I do confess it is very hard to keep up and time consuming... well... for me... it is never because I don't care or don't read them.

  • I've gotten most of my information via the internet for the last decade or so. I rarely watch TV. I only listen to the radio when I'm in the car, but often times I prefer to drive in silence and think. I used to have the radio blaring when I was driving. I now like things very quiet.

    Hello Kitty :-)

Okay, back to the comment...generally I avoid being too well informed because I find news to be depressing. I internalize others' pain too easily. I find out the big stuff.

  • depressing & overwhelming... that is another trend that is frustrating. The news is always more 'bad things that happen' than 'the good things'. So I do try to find some nice news too... that is why I like the BBC as well. A lot of times they will have nice spots on some good books or science discoveries.

*hugs* right back to ya Vkitty!

  • When you were here in Australia, what TV news did you watch? Just wondering because I've noticed that the commercial stations over here are shying away from most international news unless it involves the worldwide economy or Obama and the economy.

  • hmm... 'over here'... are you meaning in Australia? I honestly can't remember the station, but if I can remember right, it didn't seem like a major station... hmm... I know it wasn't the one that aired the simpson's, futurama or that terrible soap show.

maybe someone from there could help out with giving the best worldwide or least sensationalized channel over in AU?

  • Sounds like Channel 10. Not exactly the best when it comes to news or much else for that matter.

I'd have to say that the ABC (Australian Broadcast Commission I think it actually stands for) or SBS are the best in Australia for news. ABC has a healthy mix of local, national and international news and SBS is pretty much the god of international news.

  • Fantastic!!! Thanks so much for the info!

  • Very interesting, I definitely I agree that countries outside of U.S. Especially in Europe and Asia are much more informed about US than people here are informed about those countries. I was born and raise in Russia and came to U.S. about 5 years ago. When I go back home I do notice that. I remember the coverage of the 9/11 in Russia. It was on the news 24/7. Now, I don't want say that if something like that happened in Russia, the news stations here in US wouldn't cover it as much... but Idk

  • Very true... I don't know why... it just feels so isolating... it baffles me.

I would hope the US would cover something like that. I would really really hope the US media wouldn't ignore it. That would be a tragedy in itself.

  • The off-the-wall stream of thought Kattz22 is back! I really liked this vlog. And your right, if I just watched my local news cast, all I would find out is 90% local/state new and what uncle Obama was doing to fix the economy. But nothing to do with what is going on in the UK. Like you I have to go to the BBC. Its good to have you back in America Kattz.

  • lol! thanks so much for the comment... it is nice to hear. In all honesty whenever I edit through vids like this, I find myself boring... course I've already finished talking about it, so... talk about déjà vu... all over again ;)

  • "...under Asia."

    silly CNN learn your continents.

  • LOL!!! its true! they have 5 categories... Europe, Asia, Middle East, Americas and Africa... go figure. Maybe they will include the purple horseshoes soon?

*giggle* thanks for the comment, it still makes me laugh.

  • she laughed at 9:14 !! huzzah >.>

  • "she"

and she is standing right behind you.

*giggle* still feeling like a fly on a wall with 'those' third person comments. thanks for the smile. ;)

  • i agree, personally, I blame anonymous.

  • dude cmon smile .. honestly.. >.> like.. ur background that umm.. gray brick thing.. and like the little lighting.. u gotta loosen/lighten up a little at least ..mebee?

  • lol! I just finished up on talking about the fires, guess the smilin' came a little later in this one ;)

  • oh yeah... lighting... I've found natural light always works the best.

  • great vid. i think a lot of people are low on the curve of this issue.

i am but an ass sniffing news junky and it seems in times of so much accessible information people get a little selfish and only view things that pertain to them.

great topic needs to be discussed more.

    bravo

    dr ash...

  • Hey there Dr Ash... sorry! missed your comment earlier. Yeah, I'm thinking a lot of what is paid attention to is drawn from what we are comfortable knowing... if it spans too far from our general knowledge (or especially with politics, frustratingly complex)... we just want to tune out and let it be someone else's problem. I know I am definitely guilty of feeling that way sometimes, especially with politics.

  • I go to Daily Kos, Huffington Post. I hit the BBC when I think of it.

Also, there's a program on my PS3 called life that projects a world map and allows you to click on news stories from highlighted cities.

  • very cool... do you have a link for the PS3 program should anyone want to use it for theirs? or is it a store bought feature?

  • Afraid not. It's on the Playstation 3 console.

  • Ah! I know what kind of program you are talking about... the Wii has it as well I think.

  • Onya mate!

  • Cheers Raoul!

  • got nothing to do with reporting local stuff. It has everything to do with "controlled" information. If "THEY" don't want you to know about it the media does not tell you. News now is fluff/light news. For example how many people know that the latest stimulus bill has several gun grab bills and a health care bill that cuts care for the seniors? How many know about the Legislation on the building of the FEMA emergency camps? Not many.. why.. your not supposed to know. They make it hard to find

  • oi! it is overwhelming! The news really has changed a lot over the past few decades... I don't even think it is deep enough to really try to "keep" information from the public all the time, I honestly believe a lot of it? It just doesn't sell... its the stuff the is "sensationalized" that does. We might need to blame ourselves a bit for that too. After all... it's the public that would rather watch 'Idol' or 'Survivor' over a political news cast. *sigh*

  • *shrugs* all I can say is I watched Obbbaammma speak the other day and all I heard was how wonderful his ideas were and I was sitting there just screaming at the tv. No one is going to MAKE me go to college, if i go it is cause I want to dang it.

  • *confused* how could anyone MAKE you go to college???

  • Thats right! Dang it!!! Just say no to forced higher education..... WTF???

  • ah... I checked on this, it took some time to delve into the details, but I've found that the petition that is up for this "community service" only applies to students obtaining money from the government to go to school. It is more of a school/work program. They did already have something like this at my school for students unable to pay for it, they would work at school (helping out the teachers etc) to pay off their student loan. so from my understanding this isn't 'mandatory for everyone'

  • Now that you say it, I guess your right. Great video!

  • Thanks! glad you liked it!

  • Whoo Ireland :) amazing video as always and u look so beautiful :)

  • gotta love the Irish! Thanks!

  • you still look like Linda Hamilton! =P

  • lol! nope, no face lifts. so I guess I'll have to live with the similarities! certainly not as 'buff' as her though!!

  • It was like this long before you left Katz, you have only now noticed it because of the distance created by your travels.

  • I wonder how long? I remember seeing 'world spots' on the local news many times growing up. Wasn't it usually the first segment they covered?

  • As I remember it the 'world spots' were only the local perspective. The local channels always deferred the world report to the bottom of the hour.

  • ah! and I remember seeing it at the top of the hour with the fun or funny local stuff held off till the very end of the newscast, it used to irritate me... I would sit there waiting to hear the one "good thing that happened" spot (ie new tiger cubs born at the zoo, new technology or something along those lines)

  • locally ive seen murders go unreported on the local news the media has become very selective

  • it is really very sad... great viddy response too, thanks!

  • OMG me 1st ;D haha how cool ;D

  • lol

  • hehe

  • that you have!
