@GNRjeff you would also have to go from EL34 to 6550 and change the bias resistors for that as well. i did on my jvm. i also ended up going .68uF on the first stage bypass cap as i liked how it made the sound a little bigger and less shrill.
for the #34 sound on my JVM410H i changed the cathode bypass cap on the 1st gain stage to .47uF, bypassed the 3rd gain stage with a .1uF cap, changed last gain stage bias resistor to 1K and bypassed it with a .47uF cap, put in a 470pF/470K treble peaker on the main board, converted OD1 and OD2 into a 2203 circuit and used a 2200pF cap for the preamp treble peaker instead of a 470pF cap. should have to do something along those lines on the DSL to get the #34 atleast.
hey dude, I like very much your playing! ABout sound, I think it was really compressed by microphone....not the real sound we can hear in front the cabinet....
Actually a good reason to purchase this is because of the coolest feature ever, the fact that you can change the wattage to get it to be able to sound amazing without waking the neighbours at 3 in the morning.
really dude? must you troll every AFD100 video on youtube? wtf is ur problem with this amp and marshall for that reason. go buy a mesa and get the fuck out of here.
Hi Chris could I come to the UK to talk and maybe improve this amp - I have one and I have the issue that it has just one channel - but still this one makes me addicted because of the incredible sound - Uwe - please return your e-mail to uwe.tittmann@web.de -
@uterallindenbaum slash recorded with a rented jubilee,,,,,the guy wouldnt sell it to him.....then the guy who actually owned had it stolen from hs shop
@kramerfrank5150 it actually wasnt a jubilee. it was a modded 1959T. He used Jubilees for clean on the UYI records and live. In fact, the Jube wasn't even made until '87 and appetite was recorded in '86
@kramerfrank5150 false.. AFD was recorded with a 1959 superlead (unknown year) and the people who slash rented it from saw it at the studio one day and took it back because he pretty much stole it.... from slash's mouth...
alast, marshall has come up with something good sounding from a long time. much better than the DSLs and the JVMs. im noty just saying this coz i like slash and the AFD album and old GNR but honestly, asmuch as i hate to, admit that it even sounds better than the silver jubilee.
@budubum yeah the Jub sounds cool, but Slash never used it for distorted stuff anyway. just clean. so u could get both and have two of the most awesome amps ever! haha \m/
the afd tone is much better than the #34 tone at least in the video.. afd setting got more bottom end, not that shrill jcm 800 tone no one can stand anymore
Well, POWER SCALING = WATTAGE ATTENUATION is an old thing invented by Kevin'O'Connor of LONDON POWER in Canada,
Marshall was & is ALLWAYS is 20 years behind of what modern electronics & other modders have to offer.....as a truth Marshall copies modding tricks from modded amps that are sold used in the newspapers !!! Them Radio&TV-techs doing the tricks should get paid respect for this, am I right or what ?
Well there is no denying that tone is fucking amazing. But seriously i would rather you'd not out slash's sigs all over it. It means that no serious artists can use without looking like a fan boy. Which is a huge shame as this amp kicks ass. Maybe replace the chasis but to be honest im not entirely sure i wanna get electrocuted
@ChristianBurrell Agreed on the sigs - However no need to replace the entire chasis, just the faceplate (which i'm guessing will need to be custom made). I'd just get a tech to do it when replacing the power tubes - probably cost you under $80 to get it all done. Want i want to know is if they are keeping the production models in the old school late 70's JMP style cabinets. <3 Marshall Pre '76
sounds good..dude looks like a retard though with his guitar hanging like that. His wrists are all cupped in and his little gut hanging out. like an orangutan. Oh well, I'll buy one.
this doesn't really sound much like the Appetite amp, it sounds like all the 900's slash uses for live stuff, maybe it gets closer when he turns it down at 2:12 but this seems like another useless fluff amp from marshall
@RiffPirate9 not surprised to hear that from someone who thinks slash uses JCM 900s... haha. this is probably the greatest amp Marshall has ever built, plus he's not using SD Alnico II pro pups and hes not slash... thats why it doesnt sound exactly like AFD. :)
This amp sounds nice, but I can get a really awesome tone out of my DSL100's channel A crunch mode. It's IDENTICAL to the JCM800, plus i run a tube based pedal in front of it and it's a DREAM soundwise. You can't achieve the same effect with a transistor pedal it's not the same. It ruins the tube quality of the sound.
I can pretty much see the settings he uses here and implement them on my amp, and it's spot on!
@RazorAceYU I have a DSL 100 too and i can get real close to this.. the only difference with me is i play a prs cu 24 ltd not a Les Paul so i'll never get there but your right... DSL 100's are great amps. what pedal are you using? i use a Maxon od for just a boost..
You could get really damn close to a Les Paul if you replaced your pickups with SD Alnico II pro. Those are the ones Slash uses anyway.
The pedal i use is a H&K Tube Factor. It's amazing how great it sounds. Any Marshall amp I've ever tested it on, makes it sound more alive and dynamic. Kinda like having another separate controllable gain stage, so I'd highly recommend it over any transistor pedal ANY DAY! I'd still like to try some of the Mesa Boogie pedals though.
@RazorAceYU no can do replacing the pick ups this PRS is a limited edition only 200 were made worldwide, the pups are 59/09's only on this guitar can't get them for any other.
PRS bought the machine and the wire from Gibson that was used to wind pups in the late 50"s. so the have a really warm hot tone to them.
I really don't want to emulate Slashs's tone any way, i just love that tone and the DSL is pretty close.
@fidus1408 why are saying that? I´d love to try a strat with this amp!. Remember this guy has lotts of gain going on to get slash´s tone, but you can always turn the nob and get a cool plexi tone.
iam saving for this amp and chris george ur a luckie cunt this is the best sounding amp in the world to me finaly i might be able to get that sound iam 16 in december so birthday christmas work and selling my dsl 401 limited edition will get me there wish me luck
@fenixlespaulcustom there is 4 coming to my local guitar shop but iam not getting it its all pcb shit i hve a specail edition dsl 401 49 in the world i got it and sold it yesterday iam getting a jcm 800 now
@cameronc20 - The JCM 800's have printed circuit boards too. In fact, yould have to go back 37 years to get an original handwired marshall or buy a re-issued handwired model. The AFD 100 is just a modified JCM 800 2203, the JCM 800 2203 was just a modified JMP 2203 and the JMP 2203 was a modified1959 super lead. After 1973 all marshalls had printed circuit boards.
@chadbragg the jcm 800 has a very small pcb at tyhe volume pots this whole amp is pcb the valves are in the pcb which melts burns and crank the pcb and can not be fixed sounds good but the heat off the valves will fuck the pcb and all u can do is bin it
@cameronc20 PCBs are easy to fix.it can be done to connect like the PTP boards on that particular part that has been burnt. that also depends on how complex the circuit is with what components use and if you can get hold of them easily
@cameronc20 - Good point Cameron. Though, the AFD PCB design does resemble that of a TSL 100, which I had a long time ago. I never had any issues with it at all ( owned it for 6 years). This is do to the Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) units on modern PCB's, which regulate voltage spikes. The PCB composite is designed to withstand the tubes heat. 9/10 a cooked PCB is due to ESD failure. I was surprised at the extensive PCB design. I too, thought it would be more a of a modded 800 2203 design.
I just wish it had the usual plexi gold front. I think the satin silver finish makes it look different of course (depending on tastes) but Marshall are about a black and gold front. Having said that, with 4 x 6550 power tubes, this thing will let your entire post (zip) code know when you're playing it. However, the built in attenuator is a welcomed gift for your pensioner neighbours.
Too many idiot commenters totally missed the point of the video. This Chris dude might not be a touring performer, but he demonstrated the amp. If you're watching the video and commenting, you got to see the prototype for this amp head. The video is effective and accomplishes its purpose.
Man, this is just too typical of the world today. You watch a video about a SICK new amp coming out, and all you people can talk about is the dude's playing abilities. One of the millions of examples on this site about the POINT OF THE VIDEO. The POINT is to demonstrate an amp's sound (which, by the way, is EPIC), and you cut to something that means absolutely nothing. Nice work.
It's official, I will apply for that job... That guy is the luckiest of all... Always a Gibson and a Marshall to play with and getting payed to do that... he must think he's in heaven
@rupertacdc mate i'm serious now i would blow this dude away he does nothin of intrest i guess thats why he do this job he like a blank canvas if it sounds good it must be the amp not him i do wish i had his job but i'd make all the amps sound good x
@gargano3000 if you want to say he sucks all i ask is put up a video a video for you playing. he has to play this kind of music anyway for this amp, because people want to hear if it can do hard rock sounds like guns n roses etc.
what the hell are u guys talking about? THIS IS EXACTLY THE AFD tone! Dirty, dirty, dirty overdrive. Amazing, never thought they could match the original. Listen to Mr Brownstone with headphones and check it for yourself. Definitely not the Marshall tone from the vintage modern or any other I've played.
@marshall and chris , santiago and of course slash :
i ve pre ordered my afd yesterday , and i cant wait , i owned an marshall jcm 800 lead series back in the ninetys , and it gets stolen , since that time i`ve always looking for something similar , i think the odissey has an end , thank you marshall , wish you all the best
@rockfreak611 I'm Also a Vintage Modern user and cant get that similiar punch and tone you're talking about! How do you do it? What settings do you have and/or do you use any effects? I have the same problem as murfdog19
@Concorde1992 vintage modern wont ever give u the punchy tone that u want....the tone u talkin about can only be obtained by a plexi or jtm or jmp...the 70's marshall reissue only...the vm sounds flat and modern
Nice playing Chris! No offense but its really good to actually hear you sound like that, I sometimes find your tone on the other vids a bit muddy but that was amazingly clear and the eq was spot on! Class! :D
hey guys, we have to take into account that the regular 1960 cab is loaded with G12T-75... they have to make a sound test with some Vintage 30 (that come with more low end sound)
Almost put a down payment on one of these and sold my JCM800... so glad I didn't! I didn't want to put a down payment on one until I heard a demo of the finished product. I honestly can't say whether it sounds like AFD, Illusions, or modern Slash. Maybe if this guy was a better guitar player and put the volume up to 8 or something it would sound killer. But it honestly sounds like a Mesa to me...
@rockfreak611 I have a really hard time getting a good higher gain sound on my Vintage Modern. The vintage tones are beautiful, like a cranked JTM; but the High Dynamic Range sounds too fuzzy and tinny to me.
This thing has two channels by selecting a diff input? Is one clean and one dirty? Is there a clean sound in this amp or do you have to do it all from the Vol control on the guitar? Is there a lead boost too?
@odgeUK well for the first part of the video it sounds like Appetite because its switched to that circuit, and in the rest of it, it sounds like Illusions because its switched to the same preamp circuit slash has in his main JCM800. And no theres no clean channel. Hope that helped. :)
I never thought marshall could duplicate the afd tone, but they did. Wow, what a killer tone... I mean, exactly like appetite for destrutction. And this is not a gibson with seymour duncan pickups. I loved.
@FabC87 Hey man, I'm not sure 'cause the amp is voiced differently, but everybody is curious about this amp sounds on lower gain settings. How clean they can get? Maybe it can sound like that too.
Sounds great, definitely nice to see Marshall take their time on this and put alot of cool features in (attenuator, auto-bias, and the #34 & AFD tone sets)...not sure why some of the amp modder's on here think it doesn't sound like appetite.... Nothing will be 100% exact to the original tone, but this is pretty damn close...
As for price i already pre-ordred mine - it's ALOT cheaper than finding an original 1959SLP and paying for a mod that still isn't the exact same tone.
does that marshall back there have the killing the dragon album cover by Dio on the cab and head???

Man, this is just too typical of the world today. You watch a video about a SICK new amp coming out, and all you people can talk about is the dude's playing abilities. One of the millions of examples on this site about the POINT OF THE VIDEO. The POINT is to demonstrate an amp's sound (which, by the way, is EPIC), and you cut to something that means absolutely nothing. Nice work.

@Facemelterx2530 I was merely defending him from the other egotistical moron.

@rupertacdc *Applause* Indeed! I knew that, I was kinda talking about everyone here. Sorry. Maybe I should have sent it just to him/her/it.

gargano3000 1 year ago
@gargano3000 if you want to say he sucks all i ask is put up a video a video for you playing. he has to play this kind of music anyway for this amp, because people want to hear if it can do hard rock sounds like guns n roses etc.
rupertacdc 1 year ago
@gargano3000 Yeah this guy does suck. HEY MARSHALL- HIRE A NEW PRODUCT TESTER! Thanks. okbye.
mattstank 1 year ago
@Trikissss but when you get that good doing a job is not fun. He probably wants to record and play and be as rich as slash!
sk4forum 1 year ago
what the hell are u guys talking about? THIS IS EXACTLY THE AFD tone! Dirty, dirty, dirty overdrive. Amazing, never thought they could match the original. Listen to Mr Brownstone with headphones and check it for yourself. Definitely not the Marshall tone from the vintage modern or any other I've played.
pablosebastian30 1 year ago
@marshall and chris , santiago and of course slash :
i ve pre ordered my afd yesterday , and i cant wait , i owned an marshall jcm 800 lead series back in the ninetys , and it gets stolen , since that time i`ve always looking for something similar , i think the odissey has an end , thank you marshall , wish you all the best
marshall ROCKS !
ThrashRoC 1 year ago
Really sounds like it's missing some crunch. It's like slash had it designed to sound more like his Jubilee than the actual afd amp...
stretch90 1 year ago
woul dhave been nice to hear a few appetite riffs in there since that is what this is ment to be a copy of

i saw chris live playing on musikmesse 2010.He kicked ass

@rockfreak611 I'm Also a Vintage Modern user and cant get that similiar punch and tone you're talking about! How do you do it? What settings do you have and/or do you use any effects? I have the same problem as murfdog19
Concorde1992 1 year ago
@Concorde1992 vintage modern wont ever give u the punchy tone that u want....the tone u talkin about can only be obtained by a plexi or jtm or jmp...the 70's marshall reissue only...the vm sounds flat and modern
malmsteen80 1 year ago
is there any other marshall out there that has a similar crunch?
biggy484 1 year ago
wow.....speechless
ParkingLot1995 1 year ago
this sound is out of hell. not just an amout of gain. its THE gain. many other marshall amps sound too synthetic or too heavy. THis is soo dirty!!!
anuar1978 1 year ago
Hey guys , of course it's the afd sound !!! Nobody knows it better than slash. he developed it. its not all about comercial .
anuar1978 1 year ago
Nice playing Chris! No offense but its really good to actually hear you sound like that, I sometimes find your tone on the other vids a bit muddy but that was amazingly clear and the eq was spot on! Class! :D

KidGloves2112 1 year ago
hey guys, we have to take into account that the regular 1960 cab is loaded with G12T-75... they have to make a sound test with some Vintage 30 (that come with more low end sound)

But it honestly sounds like a Mesa to me...
mattstank 1 year ago
@mattstank If the "guy" was a better guitar player?? That's Chris George man. He demoes all Marshall amps, and he is a bad ass guitar player.
murfdog19 1 year ago
@murfdog19 So what if he demos all of Marshall's amps? He has a good job. But that doesn't make him a good guitar player.
mattstank 1 year ago
Doesn't sound too similar to AFD to me, I guess it could be because the guitar and pickups. But the amp also sounds "softer"...
stretch90 1 year ago
sounds awesome, but i can already dial in this tone and a ton more on my VM. if I ever see one in a music store, I'll be all over this thing though.
rockfreak611 1 year ago
@rockfreak611 I have a really hard time getting a good higher gain sound on my Vintage Modern. The vintage tones are beautiful, like a cranked JTM; but the High Dynamic Range sounds too fuzzy and tinny to me.
murfdog19 1 year ago
@rockfreak611 How, What settings do you have?
Concorde1992 1 year ago
This thing has two channels by selecting a diff input? Is one clean and one dirty? Is there a clean sound in this amp or do you have to do it all from the Vol control on the guitar? Is there a lead boost too?
odgeUK 1 year ago
I'm struggling to tell if this sounds more like Use Your Illusion than Appetite?. It's got that real "Locomotive" and "Back off Bitch" sound to it...
odgeUK 1 year ago
@odgeUK well for the first part of the video it sounds like Appetite because its switched to that circuit, and in the rest of it, it sounds like Illusions because its switched to the same preamp circuit slash has in his main JCM800. And no theres no clean channel. Hope that helped. :)
Acidrain1993 1 year ago
@odgeUK Now that you said it, yeah, that's Locomotive tone right there wow
uverdadeiro 1 year ago
I never thought marshall could duplicate the afd tone, but they did. Wow, what a killer tone... I mean, exactly like appetite for destrutction. And this is not a gibson with seymour duncan pickups. I loved.
pablosebastian30 1 year ago
best... amp... ever
Acidrain1993 1 year ago
why this guy doesn't play the slash riffs?
Slash131293 1 year ago
wow, spot on... if I could afford a Marshall, this would be the one I would buy. Can it still sound like a stock Plexi?
FabC87 1 year ago
@FabC87 Hey man, I'm not sure 'cause the amp is voiced differently, but everybody is curious about this amp sounds on lower gain settings. How clean they can get? Maybe it can sound like that too.
PuroMojo 1 year ago
Sounds great, definitely nice to see Marshall take their time on this and put alot of cool features in (attenuator, auto-bias, and the #34 & AFD tone sets)...not sure why some of the amp modder's on here think it doesn't sound like appetite.... Nothing will be 100% exact to the original tone, but this is pretty damn close...
As for price i already pre-ordred mine - it's ALOT cheaper than finding an original 1959SLP and paying for a mod that still isn't the exact same tone.
haddox81 1 year ago
@haddox81 yeah the mod Caswell mod cost 800$ the amp not less than 2000 plus a cab
