I read in an interview that the footage is from these amateur wrestling videos by Freddy Ruppert of Former Ghosts, from way back in the day. The straight on shots are simulated unflattering moments.

David Horvitz is in the video in a few shots- the bit at the end is likely courtesy of Angela Seo, their current keyboardist and other longtime friend of the band prior. Jamie's vegan, fruit might also be sexual. ..

Perhaps the fruit and the band member sections were just randomness, but seeing the sections where little kids are copying what they've seen off of video games and tv (professional wrestling and violence) juxtaposed with the antagonistic melody throughout connected with me on an emotional level. what makes xiu xiu great is that while they make catchy pop music they also are able to create questions surrounding it. this deconstruction of song and displacement of symbols makes it powerful. it is the intent that makes this art not the final product. they dont make kitsch, though they may appropriate it for other purposes. if you dont like it listen to the top 40.

Actually I don't think that's it either. If you listen to the chorus "disregard caution....feign deafness to wisdom" I think he's mocking the idea of "I do what I want, when I want" and in this video, the kids hurting themselves for no reason seem to go by that motto.

Definitely not one of their best videos imo, but I don't see how it's trying "too hard to be artistic" since it's pretty straightforward.

It's a brilliant video, every single scene of violence is essential to the plot and the lyrics, the overall effect is genial. Yet on the other hand, quite ill-adapted to the symbolic 'strain' that is shown and that we must carry. But that's what I like -- the contraries and degraded conceptions. Xiu Xiu and their director have got imaginative skills and I love it when I need to make a larger interpretative overview of their music.
