I love Xiu Xiu; they, along with early John Frusciante, are the only alt/indie artists that I've discovered thus far that allow me to slip easily into a sort of childhood bliss.
I read in an interview that the footage is from these amateur wrestling videos by Freddy Ruppert of Former Ghosts, from way back in the day. The straight on shots are simulated unflattering moments.
David Horvitz is in the video in a few shots- the bit at the end is likely courtesy of Angela Seo, their current keyboardist and other longtime friend of the band prior. Jamie's vegan, fruit might also be sexual. ..
it's all subjective, it's art. images are the point. there's nothing to prove.
I don't understand the joke at the end with the hand gestures. Is it supposed to be completely non-sensical, or is there some dirty joke there that I can't decipher?
Perhaps the fruit and the band member sections were just randomness, but seeing the sections where little kids are copying what they've seen off of video games and tv (professional wrestling and violence) juxtaposed with the antagonistic melody throughout connected with me on an emotional level. I can see North America for what it is, and what it could be but never will again. Don't you guys feel disappointed when you see kids hurting each other? I wonder how many accidental deaths they cause.
what makes xiu xiu great is that while they make catchy pop music they also are able to create questions surrounding it. this deconstruction of song and displacement of symbols makes it powerful. it is the intent that makes this art not the final product. they dont make kitsch, though they may appropriate it for other purposes. if you dont like it listen to the top 40.
@sleeperkickers you are 100% right, except your "everyone" remark. my comment was black and white in its reasoning, which is always problematic just like the end of yours.
@username084 I don't want some postmodern fuck singing me about the meaning of life. Music is a friend who teaches, not a teacher who tries to befriend you. Therefore, after listening to 3 xiu xiu songs, i conclude it's a really lame, uninteresting, thoughtless and emotionless band. Now flag the shit out of me.
@moderjoker i dont think xiu xiu is trying to teach you about the meaning of life. i think that they look at small sections of it. music is not a friend who teaches because when it comes down to it both you and i are irrelevant in its conception. you may think it is lame, fine, and by your own laziness and unwillingness to listen actively it may be uninteresting to you, but it isnt emotionless or thoughtless that is just a naive statement. cheers.
@all0stars i guees i just don't get this kind of art. i mean my taste in music is pretty eclectic but the random saxophone noises and other things just really turn me off to it. i guess i'll just continue listening to The Mountain Goats and Modest Mouse.
At first I was confused at why the video was so far off from the song, is it s'posed to be ironic and slightly psychotic or something? it's waaaaayyy trippy, xiu xiu are ace,
since when does a video have to be important in representing musicians?
xiu xiu is amazing, they sound perfect. they could have some guy shitting on video, as long as their music is playing, i may not watch, but i'll listen. get off this devil box and listen.
I believe the video was to imply how something like wrestling is viewed as a 'manly thing' while being kinda gay, in the sense of being half-naked, sweaty men fondling eachother
"...to imply how something like wrestling is viewed as a 'manly thing...'"
Actually I don't think that's it either. If you listen to the chorus "disregard caution....feign deafness to wisdom" I think he's mocking the idea of "I do what I want, when I want" and in this video, the kids hurting themselves for no reason seem to go by that motto.
Definitely not one of their best videos imo, but I don't see how it's trying "too hard to be artistic" since it's pretty straightforward.
Simply wonderful, My most favorite scene is when the stupid teenager falls off the ladder- after all, he deserved it. In addition I must say the saxophone and the mouth-spitting were sublime.
It's a brilliant video, every single scene of violence is essential to the plot and the lyrics, the overall effect is genial. Yet on the other hand, quite ill-adapted to the symbolic 'strain' that is shown and that we must carry. But that's what I like -- the contraries and degraded conceptions. Xiu Xiu and their director have got imaginative skills and I love it when I need to make a larger interpretative overview of their music.

Wow... you sound like an 18 year old who just took AP Art History.
What's wrong with delighting in something that , for what ever reason, you enjoy?
Personally, I like looking at something an not getting it at first. It makes me think. I like to be challenged. It's constructive...when I see this video, something in my mind goes off and I comment that I loved the video.
Maybe the next time you see something that is confusing or offensive to your sensibilities. You should try to see it from the artists perspective. I'm only saying this because, when I was 18, I was also pretty closed minded and judgmental.
The music is good. Does it matter if you understand it or not? If it holds your interest, and it makes you feel emotion, hasn't the artist done his/her job? The video is just a peek into what the director thought about when s/he listened to the music.
If this music inspires awe in some people, I do not believe they are idiots.

XIU XIU SUCKS/XIU XIU FOR LIFE HOORAY: don't you see the great irony? it's either pretension in appreciation or the illusion of condemnation by the greater pretentiousness.

It's a brilliant video, every single scene of violence is essential to the plot and the lyrics, the overall effect is genial. Xiu Xiu and their director have got imaginative skills and I love it when I need to make a larger interpretative overview of their music.
