@cglawrence Their are many folk who were born during the rage of Viet Nam and probably grew to dig the music of their time which in the mid '70 these guys were fading out, in radio play and Donna Summer began kickin. I was there for it all. I miss these guys, MTB, CDB, Outlaws, 38 special, Kansas and many more I can't remember right now. Hey, the fact is brother, you found them now, and that's what counts.
@cglawrence I look at it this way, I've been on this rock for much longer, and I couldn't keep track of all the great albums out there. I think Joe Bonamassa had 7 albums before I discovered him. Lol.
The first version I heard was by the Sons of the Pioneers. The came Johnny Cash and then others. All of the versions have there own unique version. Some of the words were changed from the original release by Sons of the Pioneers.
This is one of the very first songs I remember hearing on the radio -- the Burl Ives version when I was very young. Loved that version, but love the Outlaws version the best. It rocks
OMG... It's been a tour this morning. Many, many moons I saw the at the old race track in Hialeah. One of the most awesome concerts I went to. Been a good 10 years since I heard this. Been doing the tour this morning reminiscing. Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels... Hell of an era it was.
I was fortunate enough to see them at a small venue, in Salt Lake City '77, and was right up front near the stage...they all came out at the end of the concert playing guitars doing this song. It was a moment I'll never forget.
awesome made goosebumps like burl ives 1949 recording we need more bands like this today no mater what kind of music they are involved in WE NEED TALENTED ARTISTS
The seventies had great music, and do you know why? Reincarnated Souls, who learned their lessons long ago and could teach it in another life. Yes, reincarnated souls. Most good musicians born from the 1940's are souls who learned their lesson. And who were good again. TY, over & out!
I love Johnny Cash's music ... he was a great musician .. and his version of this song is good... but this is the best version of this song I've ever heard ... and I never knew Henry Paul was from Outlaws ...
C'ets la meilleure version de cette chanson : une explosion de guitares sur un train d'enfer ! Fabuleux ! Keep Rockin' Hughie...We love you even in France...
@jatras I seen them open for Bad Co in June '77 then in Nov '77 seen them record Bring Them Back Alive in Bicentennial Park in Miami which was the Skynyrd tribute concert.
My opinion: Combine the instrumentals of this version with the vocals of the Blues Brothers version and you'll have the absolute most blow-your-mind edition of this song ever.
YES, IT IS THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG...If you were "blessed" to have seen them play it live in concert than you "TRUELY" saw the BEST version. Yes I did and it has NEVER left my mind, body, or sould since.
Of all my kick ass favorite guitar songs, this one ranks right up there. The guitar solos give me that extra boost of energy when i lift weights to it.
If this is not the best rendition, it is darn close to it. How can it not be? Power, beauty, energy, emotion, sorrow, pain, happiness, the whole 9 yards. Just plain genius.
goddamn these southern rock bands from the 70's were so kick ass lynyrd skynyrd marshall tucker band the outlaws allman brothers just plain old good music
i guess schager 65 never heard vaughn monroe sing the song,i like cash, but i would never give my opinion as being the best of anything,i am just a person who likes to enjoy music and all kinds.the best of anything is the one you like the best. stop telling people who you think is the best.
the Outlaws hit #31 in Billboard, 3-7-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Was Henry Paul still in the group, when they recorded it? Please let me know.
I saw The Cowboys, Molly Hatchet, Randy Rhodes (Black Sabbath), the guitarists from Blue Oyster Cult, Whitesnake, Eddy Van Halen and a bunch of other guys all play this version at the same time on stage in Borbligen Germany in 1982. I lost my voice. It was epic, awesome and fantastic.
Very cool version, Its like Southern hard rock....Heck even the original version is pretty badass I saw it performed live at the bean ranch, them old folks rocked out pretty hard...No joke!
@kpsmm I saw the Outlaws open for Boston in Long Beach , CA in the late 70's when Boston was big. Boston put on a fantastic show, but Outlaws kicked their ass. They were mind-blowingly spectacular...
