  • Thanks Doug, I really enjoyed this lesson and i want more!!! What amp are you jamming through on this video, I have many amps, my new favorite, a line6 IV 75 watt, was never a big line 6 fan, but this amp is perfect for jamming at home.

  • Nice lesson, yep i do remember you all metal'd out in the 80's adds, just curious, the carvin looks like it plays really nice, can carvins get really low string action without buzz???dont know if i should buy a carvin or an EVH special. Thanks

  • @chickabuka Carvin's play great and can be set up with very low string action without buzzing. I have Jacksons, Gibsons, and many other guitars but I choose to play the Carvin because it sounds great and is very comfortable to play. I like low string action too.

  • @dmarks1 Hey Doug Thanks for the reply, on this particular video lesson, which video set can i order that has all of these lessons on it? Thanks

  • @chickabuka This stuff is taught in Classic Metal Licks available at metalmethod com

  • @dmarks1 Thanks Doug, really enjoyed this lesson and I want more!!! what amp are you playing through in this video?

  • old man still rocks

  • Still have the VHS tapes and booklets with the freehand art work.....:) I remember the old Guitar World ads where Doug does a Q&A, where he states that NO he doesn't have hair extensions and dont hate him because he's beautiful... I thought it was hilarious!!!

  • @nata72 Yes, "don't hate me because I'm beautiful" was one of my finer moments. I might have matched it recently with a newsletter that I sent out. The subject said, "Your house is on fire." I figured that would get people to take a look at the newsletter.

  • Bought the complete course on VHS in the late 80's... I have been playing on and off professionally since the early 90's and still actively teaching and giving lessons. All due to falling in love with 80's metal / 70's Rock, classical music, and buying these lessons... Thanks Doug!

  • @nata72 You're welcome

  • pretty good

  • Du have the tab for the first lick

  • @element2317 We have tab for all 109 licks that come with the DVD. metalmethod com

  • what guitar is that?

  • @GuitarGigGuys It's a Carvin. I forget the exact model number but you can find it in their online catalog. It's a great guitar.

  • I enjoyed and learnt something special. Thank You " Jayanth".

  • Just ordered the complete basic course + classic metal licks a few moments ago. Can't wait to get started!

  • nice guitar and sound...

  • These lessons will hands down turn you into an excellent guitar player.

  • @jdvh5150 Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it.

  • I was thinking on Buying the guitar world special package which includes the complete basic course and the speed kills. Is it really worth it? Do i need to know some theory?

  • @c4cereal : No, you don't need to know theory. Theory is taught in The Complete Basic Course. Of course I think the Guitar World special is a great deal - 12 DVDs for only $149.95. Post questions about the course on our Forum at bb-metalmethod com. Ask people that are currently using the lessons what they think. That's more important than my opinion.

  • keep rockin dude ^^

  • @shredingdude - I have no choice

  • LOL! RIGHT ON!!!!

  • well the moment my fingers move that fast, ill be able to figure it all out

  • @mikehabada - It requires patience and repetition. Start out slow and gradually increase speed.

  • hey dude, just wanted to say thanks for this video. its the most helpful one ive seen yet. how you explain is clear and 100% understandable. look forward to learning more from you. thanks again

  • @lewisjacksonv - You're welcome.

  • Hey Doug if it was not for your teaching I wouldn't have gottene so good thanks and cheers man your methods are awsome

  • @CBchief777 - You're welcome. I'd like to hear you play.

  • Doug Marks- WOW...Great to see you after all these years....way back when you came up w/ a character called Zibby Wibby and I created a caricature for this little guy.....Anyway, these days I get a lot of calls for session and live work and I wouldn't be getting these calls if I hadn't gotten your lessons in '84. You're a brilliant teacher. Thanks and take care buddy!!

    Steve Osbourne

  • Hey Steve, great hearing from you. Zibby Wibby, that's pretty funny. I remember you from "way back then". I still vaguely remember what your caricature looked like. Did we include it in the Metal Message? If so, that's probably why I remember it. I released the '83 version of the course on CD a couple of years ago and included a lot of the early material. Great hearing from you Steve and congratulations on your success.

  • your 80s series lessons and alot of work taught me alot of shit....thanx dude..

  • You're welcome. It's always great to hear from people that studied the course back in the 80's. I'm glad that I was able to help you.

  • i get by changing the phrase you play certain sections of lick faster but at the same tempo

  • Nice name : )

  • hey can you send me a link to the tab of lick #21 if you have it

  • Sign up for our newsletter. I will be revising Classic Metal Licks and sharing the video with tab at no charge.

  • hey doug your the coolest man, im getting the complete course of metal method and i was wondering what gear you use like cables, amps, pedals, strings, etc...

    Thanks Doug

  • Thanks Matt. I recorded this using a Line 6 Pod XT Live. That's the only pedal I use. I'm not particular about the brand of cables or strings. I use light gauge strings.

  • hey doug want i meant to say was that i knew most of the stuff, and another question, do i need to buy the dvd to be able to study the entire course, because i would love to study this.

  • You don't need to buy the entire course to study this. Classic Metal Licks is available on DVD for $19.95. It's not necessary to buy anything else.

  • Agreed, your sound is amazing.

Do you talk about building up speed in your DVDs?

  • Awesome instruction fairplay, if i wasn't broke i'd buy the dvd set, does anyone know what guitar that is? it looks and sounds really great

  • It's a Carvin. Based on the headstock I'd say it was a 95-03 style. It's from the mid to late 80's

  • thanks(not that i could ever afford to buy one like),80's was the best, still is

  • You're a genius. I love your sweet tone, too. You sound awesome.

  • Excellent!

  • hey thanks for the assistance with the uncommon time signatures (and the add as a friend too)

Along with Dave Hope, who else have you known/worked with over the years?

  • Dave Hope was an acquaintance many years ago. I never worked with him. My band Hawk featured Lonnie Vincent (bullet boys bass player) and drummer Scott Travis (Racer X, Judas Priest). Matt Sorum (Guns and Velvet Revolver) played on my Hawk album. You can check out the Hawk video at RockGuitar com

  • dude you've got a super tight sound

  • Thanks. I work at it. It doesn't come easy. It's nice to be appreciated.

  • hey doug just curious, is there a trick counting unusual time signatures such as 13/8 or 11/8?

  • That's a great question. Typically when someone writes popular music with weird time signatures they're unaware of the time signature. The artist thinks that the piece sounds cool. To keep it together they count two after one part and three after the next part (for example) to stay with the rhythm of the piece. Years ago I knew Dave Hope, the original bass player for Kansas. Their time signatures were complicated but that's the way he counted. I don't believe that he read music notation.

  • Ha Ha .. A cat landing on it's feet ..That's a good one , Because I do it all the time,At least most of the time, lol Thank god.. Great teachings

  • Can anyone tell me the best place to order these from?

  • metalmethod com

  • I just happened across this a few minutes ago and think that it's great. I bought the lessons back in the late 80's when they were on VHS. Great investment however they have since been lost. I will be buying the updated version on DVD. Doug......you've got it down to a science brother. Keep up the good work.

  • Doug, You are great at simplifying and taking the frustration out of learning. Maybe I should have hired you to help me practice for my series 6 & 63 securities exam! lol

Metal Method licks and Mutual Funds, Now there's a combo, haha!

  • Thanks. I'm a lot better at spending money than investing money... and I have the portfolio to prove it.

  • co0o0o0o0oL!!!!!!!

  • Awesome video!

  • Thanks very much.

  • what scales were you using in this video?

  • The lick that I'm repeating throughout is pentatonic as I explain toward the end of the clip. At one point I add some notes to make it natural minor (aeolian) and even throw in a b5 at one point.

  • Awesome Doug!

But do you know musical notation?

What would also be helpful is if you could give musical notation in addition to tabs to your DVDs.

Hmm, I need some more riffs, I think I'm going to buy this.

  • Thanks. I prefer tab. I'm working on a lesson that will probably include both. We are capable of outputting standard notation on any of our tab.

  • Awesome!

    Thanks!

    Oh, and what are modes?

I keep hearing about Phrygian, Aeolian, what exactly are modes? Do you know a good website for where I can find this out? Do you mention them in your lessons? Thanks.

  • There are plenty of websites that explain modes. Just do a Google search. I begin explaining modes in Stage 4 of my course. Stage 6 teaches a very simple way to learn and apply modal theory to rock guitar. Just reading about modes or me trying to explain them to you here is not going to get the job done.

  • We checked out your lessons, back in jr high school late70's,I bought your lessons(VHS) in the late80's.l got in a great band in the 90's.Here it is 2009 and I'm still learning from you.You are one great teacher, and thanks for all the help. I miss the hair bands ;)Brian W

  • thanks Doug :)

  • You're welcome.

  • Your a very good teacher. You explain things very well.

  • Thanks. I'm glad to be able to help.

  • Thanks dmarks

  • You're welcome.

  • I wish I could play like him. He is amazing

  • Practice. If you're young, you can become a Shredder God.

  • Thanks for the compliment. Carcosa is right, there's nothing that I can do that can't be learned. It just takes practice.

  • I do know that you have heavy theory ability-- but like you kind of allude to here, there's another style that's heavily based on licks and position play. Many times the more intuitive lick-based style can sound better than the theory kind, though when they really reach the pinnacle, like Becker, the theory guitarists sound better IMO.

Shred got the shaft real bad by the corrupt music industry but it seems to be making a bit of a resurgence. We can thank Guitar Hero for that :)

  • thats what I have concluded 2. Now I do not worry so much about if I can master this or that, but if i actually have enough musical talent as you explain in your basic guitar course to actually make me somebody lol.

  • Doug I like how you explain things, it makes it easier to learn.

  • Thanks. I spend a lot of time on the details.
