Trivia for anyone who's interested: The protest in this opening scene is not staged but a real demonstration by the Gay Activists Alliance. They were protesting a private investigation firm called Fidelifacts after its president boasted about being able to root out homosexual job applicants for homophobic employers. When the Shaft film crew turned up to film the scene they thought the protestors following a giant duck looked appropriately bizarre and just filmed Roundtree walk through it.

I grew up with Tidyman's kids. Silliphant later did "The Poseidon Adventure," and his son was assassinated. I was so glad to see Roundtree in "Seven." We can probably get this on DVD at our médiathèque near Paris, France -- I was too young to see this when it came out, and I think my French spouse will love it. Thank you for posting. RIP Isaac Hayes, another personal connection, tragically paralyzed in Prospect Park while I was living there. I miss the USA sometimes. Uprated and shared.

Shaft has to be one of the worst films in history, with one of the best soundtracks. Roundtree was a great character actor, but the storyline was pants. The film itself epitomises the early exploitation of black audiences by hollywood. I guess they just discovered that black Americans had money to spend too. Like I say, awful film, great soundtrack. I saw it for the first time a few years ago and boy was it disappointing when I think how long I knew the Isaac Hayes music. Aw well!

@MadMarchHair This movie is the template for films liked the French Connection....Hollywood was dying because it the film mogul wouldn't concede to the new era of film making....This film along with Super Fly helped save a film industry that was dying until they found away to embrace the 70s counterculture film making era.....This holds up against Easy Rider anyday.  The explotation of black audiences/performers took place 50 years prior to this film.. The film's popularity is split though...

It was a phrase cojoured up by a man called Joel Griffen, he wanted to do the publicity for 'Superfly', but got turned down by the white owned film companies. Griffen was black. It's been wrongly attributed to be a phrase thought of by the producers of SHAFT,who disliked the phrase and certainly didn't like it being used to describe their film.
