Parineeta - the book was written by the same writer who wrote Devdas - decades ago. Sharat Chandra Chatterji is regarded is one of the finest novelist ever to come from Indian subcontinent. Parineeta and Devdas are his most critical, influential and are considered bipolar works of each other. "Tragedy" DEVDAS and "Comedy" Parineeta as in they both are about young lovers but with contrastic endings. One happy and one sad. They also spoke volumes about the class system at that time.

When I said "Comedy", I refered to the actual term that was used since the early days of Greek Theatre in Ancient Greece,where "Tragedy" was referred to Drama where the main character dies in the end (unhappy ending), and "comedy" where the main characters live happily (happy ending). Comedy doesnt means "funny". Its a ending where the conflict gets resolved in the end.

I guess you didnt study drama otherwise you wouldve known.

I don't think the message is he should have slapped her - at the end of the movie he says it himself. He's acting like a complete and utter jerk right now, and he'll have to come to terms with that at the end of the movie. I do agree that it's a little too common of a movie scene.
