For one thing Christianity teaches us what the purpose of religion is, charity, visting the sick and prisoners and aiding the poor. They didn't do this in India. They still dont except for Christian missionaries. Most religions don't even have this concept.

Buddhists and hinduists don't believe in charity. They believe that poor people are starving to be punished for sins in their past life. And I know no Muslim charities or rescue missions that aid the homeless and hungry in inner cities the way Christians do. there are far more charities worldwide by Christians than Muslims.

Just because they have a different concept of karma doesn't mean they aren't into charity. I know Buddhists AND Hindus that a big-time givers. And perhaps you should do some research on Muslim charities. They aren't all funding al Queda. But you must also consider the fact that the planet has more Christians than any other religion so it follows that they give more. It's not proportional but you gotta consider the fact that Christians have a larger base to start.

This is a new concept for the eastern religions. They are becoming givers because they are faced with a competing world view. That is what motivates them. If they don't set up orphanages, food banks ETC the Christians and Muslims will grab away their converts. It almost happened in the 8th century in China through the same thing.

In the 8th century Christian missionaries won over lots of converts mainly the poor who were being screwed. That lead to conflict with the emperor and most of them were killed or exiled. All because they came along and gave food to starving poor people and shared with them that Christ could forgive them of their sins. That they could not be held accountable for something they did in a supposed past life.

Fine. Then we can say that "giving" as a tool to proselytize is a fairly new tactic. But giving as a humane practice has always been part of the canon of ethics (yes, Aristotle is a Western figure but he studied abroad, came back then formulated that concept).
Siddhartha made quite a few conclusions about the inherent virtue in sharing as well.
Both examples aren't from Western Christian ethics. Both are quite old as well.

Is ignorance a virtue to you? Buddhists do practice charity. In fact, the idea of charity is enshrined in the noble eightfold path. To do NOT believe that poor people are punished for sins in their past life. They believe that ALL life is suffering.
Also, if you would leave the united states, you would find that Buddhist monasteries operate much like churches...giving the poor a place to sleep and whatever food they can afford.
