I think slowing it down added a nice "Epic" touch. Too many metal-heads spam the notes as fast as they can when they remake this song and ends up sounding like noise or a screamo.
Classic game. I have the PC version. The PS port is the best one in my opinion. The sound track off 3DO sounds phenomenal. If you like classic and next gen video game reviews check out my channel.
@GunsOfThePhoenix Same deal with the 3DO port of Wolfenstein 3D. Best music of all, even better than the Mac remake, but the game itself was horrible and unbalanced. The 3DO was just poorly done, even though its hardware was top-notch.
@killkenny5000 The jaguar port changed the balance of the game too much by allowing you to reach up to 201% health and a gazillion bullets without upping the enemy strength, and it borrowed a lot of its graphics straight from Doom. It did look very nice, but it made the game extremely easy, and it's already not hard if you know what you're doing.
@Vidszhite yah the jaguar port isnt the best port since it only have 30 levels and easy health pick ups by using tressure
but the GBA pot is alot worst
1.crappy control 2.no music (i mean literally no music even though doom on jaguar has no music during the gameplay it still have music at the end of the stats screen) 3.well its just a rly cheap port :l
Even though I hate Nintendo, I think the Snes version is great for it's time. I love my Jag though, and heard that the reason the sound track was missing is due to cartridge space and cost, and not processing power. 32X Doom is 3MB, the Jag version is 4MB with much higher quality textures. A 6MB Cartridge back then would have been way to costly.
I'd say, 3DO's music, Jaguar's graphics, 32x's controls, SNES's base gameplay and levels (includes all levels (except secret ones) and also has all the bosses).
SNES totals 21 levels, which is less than Jag, 3DO, etc's 24 levels. (PC Doom is 27 levels)
I'd take the SNES controller over the 32X's...L and R for strafe is good times.
I'd take the Jaguar's game play too...with the 32X soundtrack, since it's most like the PC versions (if you played that version, I don't know, personally I don't like remixes like SNES and 3DO have) ideally I'd take the PC soundtrack and levels of course.
Actually, SNES Doom had 22 levels. It was only missing E1M6 - Central Processing, E2M2 - Containment Area, E2M5 - Command Center, E2M7 - Spawning Vats and E3M5 - Unholy Cathedral (basically the largest maps in the game).
@Reconite11: Actually SNES Doom had all the secret maps.
@PimpUigi yes but the snes game cartrige of doom had little space since the snes was not able to support 3d grapics so a lot of the space was used to do that plus the 32x suppoted the 3d grapichs and it had less levels then the snes and the music was worse also the jad yes it was a good port of doombut they
@PimpUigi had no music during the real gamplay only on the status screen which is really screwed up. the snes to put the longer levels on whould be very short then istead of 22 levels you would get about 14 levels with the bigger maps and honestly sompeople like doom being shorter because the game gets very repeditive in it's own gamplay
It sounded like choking an angry pony to death under a sea of bear blood, which sounds like it would be awesome, but doesn't actually sound awesome at all.
Regardless, for the soundtrack, I'd stick to the original. You can't lose with the original Doom, even if it's a "Choose a game that isn't Doom" contest, you can't lose.
@Durntdewd I dont understand how a sea of bear blood affects your hearing more than regular blood but anyway I take it you have tried the whole choking a pony thing?
@PimpUigi I hate to point this out and be a 'sperging goon but the SNES version doesn't have "remixes", the soundtrack is a straight-up port of the PC version, it just uses a different soundchip so the instruments it plays are different. The 3DO versions do seem to be different arrangements though.
@gameguy09 I love the music from the 3do version, but the Jaguar version graphics were terrible! The menus were okay but in game was very poor. I think the playstation was the best port overall and the in game music was swapped for atmospheric effects was worked well.
I have to disagree with the SNES music lovers. I have the SNES, N64, PS1, Doom 3 SOE version on XBOX, and the DOS PC version of this game. I think the best is the 3DO version of which I do not have that is being played in this vid. Ofcourse the PS1 and 64 versions really can't be compared since their music is totally different. I think the best is the Doom 3 SOE on XBOX has the best version under the 3DO. Then the SNES. And the absolute worst is the Sega 32X version.
The GBA version is pretty bad, but passable especially for being a GBA which isn't known for it's sound quality. The 32X version is so bad it's funny. I downloaded the first 8 songs for the 32X Doom just so I could laugh at how bad it sounds.
hahaha I can't understand why the thumbs down! 32X version is ages ahead of snes version... and the music quality was just fine different but still Doom music.
No music...it is certainly the best not counting that aspect.
Which is why I pick the new Homebrew 24 level version of 32X as the best version for me.
PC version soundtrack, 24 levels, fast frame rate, good resolution (not as good as Jag's, and no monster fighting like Jag) just wish there wasn't a glitch in level 15 (the exit sends you to the last level, ending the game early, which forces you start the Inferno chapter with no weapons)
@PimpUigi: I don't get why so many people say that the SNES version has remixes. I just went back and compared the PC tracks and the SNES tracks again, and they are the same (other than some obvious sample and quality differences). Google "doom 2 music", click the first result (Doom Depot), and compare the "SNES Doom" section's tracks and the "Ultimate Doom" tracks under the "Ultimate Doom & Doom 2 MP2s (from Doomworld)" section.
where did my comment go? lol, all i said was- cowbell? thats real epic, i hate this version, clarity is good! snes version owned this one because it was basically the PC version on steroids (music)
i absolutely hate this version...its funny because if i never heard any other version in my life this would sound appropriate on Castlevania : symphony of the night...oorrrrrrrr Saved by the bell talent show...
I completely agree with you there. Someone said that this was the best version, so I came here to check it out. Man, this version IS HORRIBLE. Sorry 3DO lovers, but the SNES version kills this one.
Unlike the other Doom "At Doom's Gate" themes I've heard, which pumps you up and gives you an adrenaline rush, this one takes it down a notch and becomes more focused and makes you want to kick ass. Totally bad-ass instead of psycho.
the best version of doom ever is the xbox live arcade one because it is an exact port of the pc with hd graphics and online and offline multiplayer (co-op or versus) and its only £4
Awesome depth. Easily the best console Doom music. This one is the closest to rivaling the PC E1M1 in awesomeness even if the temp is a bit slow, but there was still no beating the PC for titular price/value.
y would doom 4 the 3do is so bad in the game but good music but nothing tops wolfenstein 3d for the 3do it is nice and smooth than the doom 3do because wolfenstein has the hi res graphics and better frame rate thats y i top wolfenstein 3d for the 3do

Wow, didnt have a clue that the 3DO version had this good music, its awesome.. but like previous posters said, to bad it cost a fortune to buy. Atleast we can listen to it here and laugh at the 32x for being beaten YET AGAIN XD
Ya, everytime i hear this song, it reminds me of Top Gun. In fact, I bet it's from the guys that did the Top Gun soundtrack! lol, just kidding. I don't really think so... but still, it sounds like I'm watching Top Gun rather than playing Doom.
GREAT song! bobby prince did an EXCELLENT job using like almost no other the sounblaster/yamaha opl chips (dos doom) but this 3DO is even better in some aspects, really well instrumentated!
I wouldn't mind hearing this when I played dos doom long time ago!
Like others said in other comments, the dos doom version of this track was faster and more berserk! I like the two versions though.
Wonder who did these 3DO doom versions, you can feel the work put on them
An early CD based videogaming/"multimedia" console from the 90's. Do a search for it on wikipedia (I'd link to it myself if stupid YouTube let me post links in these comments :\ )
I still have my 3DO... and this game... Time for an all nighter =)

@Vidszhite how the hell the 3DO port of wolf3d is horrible
decent controls
decent frame rate
great music and graphics

32X's music was extremely similar to the PC's original music played on a Soundblaster.
SNES had remixes like people make for jDoom/Risen 3D.
3DO has OCRemix level Remixes.
I'd take the 32X myself because I want what's close to the PC version.

HORRIBLE! You who give this 5 stars what are you thinking? The original soundtrack on PC are far better than this crap.

Ya, everytime i hear this song, it reminds me of Top Gun. In fact, I bet it's from the guys that did the Top Gun soundtrack! lol, just kidding. I don't really think so... but still, it sounds like I'm watching Top Gun rather than playing Doom.

After listening to it again, it really does sound like something you would hear from Top Gun, but you know what?
It's awesome!

To each their own.

GREAT song! bobby prince did an EXCELLENT job using like almost no other the sounblaster/yamaha opl chips (dos doom) but this 3DO is even better in some aspects, really well instrumentated!
I wouldn't mind hearing this when I played dos doom long time ago!
Like others said in other comments, the dos doom version of this track was faster and more berserk! I like the two versions though.
Wonder who did these 3DO doom versions, you can feel the work put on them
5 stars! (use the &fmt=18 trick!)

I don't know what to say. Is it the best version? Well it sounds far better than any other versions of At Doom's Gate, but... its slow...

This version is really really excellent!
I wonder who realized this version with real instruments. It sounds really kick ass.

PSX version failed
Digman2012 3 years ago 3
Why did it fail? I mean it's THE best version of Doom in my opinion
SiLeNtXaViOr 3 years ago
PSX isn't even the same feel.
Link4587452 3 years ago
I think it has the right atmosphere even tho i'd like to se the original doom tracks come over to the playstation...
SiLeNtXaViOr 3 years ago
It has a different atmosphere which is why it sucks. The original was perfect.
Link4587452 3 years ago
Well we have diffrent opinions that's all...

This is my favorite version of the song! I downloaded it right away!

even though the 3DO died out, games like this saved its reputation. Especially the music.

Are you kidding? This is the best version. It's got the best instrumentation, the best quality, and it's really dark and eerie.

Listen to those pinch harmonics, must have had Zakk Wylde do the song
MetalHeadMat666 3 years ago
great to hear the music on the 3DO,
Played all version of DOOM on all formats,
3DO had some great tunes,
just like WOLF 3D.
dukenukemman 3 years ago
Cool, but the original version of this track was better

One question, what is 3DO?

An early CD based videogaming/"multimedia" console from the 90's. Do a search for it on wikipedia (I'd link to it myself if stupid YouTube let me post links in these comments :\ )
