These musicians are great. Their performance is great. The videographer is drunk and can't find enough good footage to make a decent video so he had to use still pictures to get the job done. Videographer should get a VWI (Videoing While Intoxicated) I was so dizzy after watching this that I had to have a straight shot of ....
@idontbelieveok It means that Birelli can do everything that can be done with a guitar. He is possibly the most accomplished plecktrum guitarist to date.
I actually enjoyed Sulvan's solo, I mean, he had to do something special to impress when playing after Bireli! :P I guess the same can be said about his guitar and sound...?
@Menintheshadow this doesnt tell us anything about him. or about you, just that you are probably fat and ugly like Bireli, but most probably not even as close as talented as he is XDD, haaha.
dont take it seriously, im just kidding with you, im bored = =
This DOES deserve a "look at me" kind of advertisement from the youtube staff... This will probably bring a lot of people to pay some well deserved attention to jazz as a whole!
This is something _else_ than the too classical De Lucia/Di Meola/McLaughlin trio...
Biréli Lagrene est un très grand mais je trouve Sylvain Luc encore plus original, quel créatif sur un seul solo! En tous cas, nous n'avons rien à envier aux ricains quant aux guitaristes.
This is great, both these guys are really impressive, I just wish when they were playing rhythm they'd keep it straighter, so when the lead is syncopating it doesn't just fall apart. Top notch stuff nonetheless.
I can still see where it's going even when they leave the "straighter" chords; they're having fun, and I didn't get lost when they stretched. Let someone else play it straight-laced and pedestrian, I like hearing it mixed up a bit. To me, they came back when they needed to...
You should study rhythm if you want to understand what they are doing better, and if you are not musical, try to enjoy the fact that they are stretching things rhythmically in this manner. What is the point of improvisation if we just play within ourselves, or play what people want to hear. How then do we grow? Not all jazz is easy listening. That rhythmic stuff Sylvan did is some of the most virtuosic single string stuff i've ever heard. LOVED it...
I love it as well, that is why I hate that Bireli snubs its impact with rhythm that does not complement or contrast well. If there is one thing music should always have it is contrast and this is most important when two guitarists play together. Guitarists are famous for wanting to take the spotlight. If you listen to an album like the one Herb Ellis & Joe Pass record together the other is respectful enough to hold down the song while one solos and the result is very satisfying.
Plenty of artists stretch rhythm without having the song fall apart because someone is the "glue".Take "The Bad Plus" they constantly push the boundaries of what we see as rhythm yet they are able to hold it together (often because the bass player is so incredibly solid, the piano and drums can do whatever they want). If you are predisposed to listening to only guitarists take Peter Finger as an excellent example of someone who can both push harmonic and rhythmic boundaries without train wrecks.
No one should ever assume that because someone is labeled as a "virtuoso" everything they do should be taken as gospel; that is an attribute of immature and inexperienced musicians.
@Youre taking it too seriously. If you dont like birelis performance fine. I wouldnt try and tell bireli how to play if i were you tho. He plays exactly how he means to and I have about 15 of his albums and his performance in all are exceptional in my mind.
His live in vienne DVD also. I reccommend you try listening to them and maybe you will change your opinion of his playing.
i like what your saying, i do believe that music doesn't need to have contrast though, music just is and you like it or you don't, and even our opinions change on the subject very regularly! I think in this context Birelli could have interacted more but i will not tell one of the greatest guitarists i've ever heard what he should do with his comping lol.
Playing on one string is the best way to develop your ears and physical playing through spacial fret / intervalic relationships. Mick Goodrick called this approach the "unitar", playing on one string.
