I'm glad I saw this, because every soon, my family and I are going to bring a new 6 month old kitten into our house to see if we can keep him, but we have a 6 1/2 year old cat with us, and I want to be prepared for what might happen with the two.
Right now I'm trying to introduce my new kitten to my female bengal. The kitten arrived on monday and today I put him in his transportation box and let her smell. But she hit the box and didn't like the experience... let's try again tomorrow!
Hmmm the best way to introduce a new cat, especially a playful little kitten is actually to restrict them first. Gives the resident cat the control it desires since it is her territory. Most cats I'd advise the new cat is put in a large cage so that it has room to move, while the resident cat can act normally. They will come meet the newcomer and are more likely to safely accept this way. After a period of time you can begin letting the new cat out for periods of time at first.
though we only kept my cat and kitten in diffrent rooms at night my adult cat acted the same way as freya did at first then after we got shaids shots princesse is acting like a mothe to shaid now shaid is even suckling on princess (corce she isnt getting any milk) my only problem is when we brot shaid ome she turned to us to play now she pritty much another leg for princess i miss the kitten that didnt run from me on sight
This takes me back 7 years when I had the fortune to initiate a relationship between a kitten and a hissy cat mistress. The mistress hissed him right in the face, she, the kitten, flew a meter backwards, rushed heads first straight in under the bed and hissed the older cat right back. After a few days of this behavior they where the best friends.
9:10 headlock! haha xD Did either cat start urinating around the house? I have a 12 year old cat but we're considering getting a ragdoll kitten, we just don't want the cats to wee everywhere
Loved this video. So much more than just a video of cats fighting/playing. Great 'instruction' for anyone looking to introcuce a new kitten to an older cat.
in general, this is how ALL cats react to kittens, not just Bengals. My older cat took 2 weeks to get used to the new kitten and even longer to get used to the new new kitten, whereas the 'new' kitten was not even phased by the new new kitten. LOL!
Fantastic video !! I am so glad I saw it. It was wonderful to watch Teego and Freya get to know each other. Also kitten antics are always good for a laugh. Thank you for sharing !!
Great video, interesting to see the relationship develop between the two of them. I love the innocence of kittens when they are pushing their luck with other cats and learning about their boundaries :-)
I have 4 cats. 2 Persians (littermates) a Siamese, and a bobcat that was orphaned under my portch(ok Bob could be concidered a wild cat). All of them get along real well and always play together. I went through a similiar time when my persians met my siamese for the fitrst time but it took them maybe 2 days to realize that they could get along. Bob was the only problem I ahd because the others didn't like him at all when he first came into the house. But now they are all friends.
i have a cat thats 4 years old and a new kitten , not sure how old but he has just started eatting solids. anyway they are not getting on at all. my older cat lilly is hiss evry badly at me and jack the kitten. also lilly isnt eatting. will this method help them be friends & how do i get lilly to eat?
i really need help big time, my mum is thinking about getting rid of the kitten :(
@Tasleemaj123 It took up to 10 days for Freya to get used to Teego. how long has it been for you? You could also look up a product called feliway too, that's very good for chilling out cats. also, make sure they eat in separate rooms too? Hope this helps!
@chrisbitz well thats not very long, Jack arrived yesterday night and the hissing began. But after this video iv'e kept them apart & lilly is more relaxed now. Thank you this & you helped alot! :D
@Tasleemaj123 I hope you did not give the lil kitten away yet. What you always need to do is. Put the lil one in a room. So, the older one can get use to the scent. Keep it in there for about a few hrs. Then put the older one in the room. It is said, you need to keep them in a room for up to two wks. I don't ever do that. Anyhow, Just keep doing it for a few days. By then, they should be use to each other. If not, give it a lil longer. And let them get use to each other, by keeping them together
Ive 2 male tom cats, one about 4 years older than the other, both are not neuterd and ive just introduced them to two new kittens, all they do is throw strops and go sulk in the corner, theyre just big children, so funny, but now they all sleep in the one bed, eat from the one bowl even tho they all have their own seperate ones
i am about to go through this scenario in two weeks with my 6year old cat n a vrry new kitten born july 15. i cannot wait. your older cat reminds me sp much of my little queen lol. very enjoyable to watch ur story indeed.
flicking a cats nose is not cruelty i have done it it many times with i brought a kitten home to a previous cat i owned and it makes them know that attacking a kitten is wrong
@FeliciaL2287 all you are doing flicking the cats nose is telling them that an action which comes NATURALLY to them is wrong. Freya acts the same as my cat does towards our puppy, but i don't flick him on the nose to stop him from ascerting his dominance over the other. All Freya is doing is teaching Teego who's in charge.
@FeliciaL2287 I DONT see it as cruelty neither not that i do that but people has their own way of training their cat like sharp NO or squrt them with water or like i just did right now clap my hands loud to make them get down from chairs i dont know if your way helps but thats your way cant argue on that
Flicking a cat's nose is kinda extreme... It isn't like a dog's nose where you can just gently bap it with two fingers. Imagine being smacked in the face by a door that was shoved open- That's probably accurate to what a cat would feel like getting it's nose Flicked, in a literal sense.
@Blivia well i dont do that or need to the person i was talking to said he does that and dont see it as cruelty i understand that it is more sensitive than dogs but to call that animal cruelty is is ridiculus i wouldnt recomend doing that but if you call that animal cruelty i suppose patting its behind with a newspaper or so to stop it from clawing your furniture is cruelty too worked for me now they know better thats his way of training his cat if it works we cant complain XD
Yeah, I understand, it just depends on how hard you'd flick it in the nose. Really, it can be pretty hard to control how hard you flick. And if you don't have some real self control, you could end up hurting the cat. Lol, That was my only point, and in that way it'd be animal abuse. =o
@FeliciaL2287 Except this is perfectly naturally behavior for cats. There's always been a hierarchy among older and younger cats, and most animals in general; the older ones are in charge, and the younger ones need to learn this and know that their day will come. It's all perfectly normal in their world. As long as she's not attempting to kill the kitten, there's no need to freak out. Maybe you don't consider it cruelty, but it's definitely over-reacting.
omg that's too cute! I thought bengals were more enthousiastic in welcoming other cats!!! more territorial apparently... We can notice the home made cat tree where she used to climb! thanks for the vid
@FeliciaL2287 I'm afraid I would consider that animal cruelty. Cat's noses are 100s of times more sensitive than ours, and that's an incredible over reaction for perfectly normal behaviour. That is not an acceptabl method of correction. The method we use is a very sharp "NO" that makes the cat jump!
Trying to punish natural behaviour can create many many problem issues with any animal, and is STRONGLY NOT recommended by me.
been thinking of adopting a new kitten so that our cat can have a playmate but not sure if they would get along. now this video just gave me a little idea. cute! my fave is the last part of it. = )
Adult cat is bored!!....That is unfriendly to a kitten......Kitten is more friendly, likes to soicalize and plays with the toys...etc......Nonsense the damn adult cat!
oh ok so my cat is normal we just got a new kitten and the older cat does exactly like yours so I was concern that he might hurt the kitten alright no worries
My female bengal cat (1 years old) have a hard time not chassing the new kitten (3 months) i have. She just want to get all over him, scare him, punch him with his paw or bite him. I watch them closely. Bengal are savage in their blood from the asian leopard cat. She seriously hunt him like he is a mouse or something she have the killer instinct and now i realize that. Anyway i hope for the best in the next days :) I saved a 3 months kitten so thats the most important for me!
Loved your video! I really want to get a male kitten for my older female cat. She's a similar breed to your cat, and she'll be 6 years old when i finally am able to get another kitten. Any tips?
This is an excellent insight into how cats socialize and deal with new cats in the household. A lot of poeple are used to dogs and their rapid socialization process and don't realize that 2-3 weeks to introduce a new kitten or cat into your household is really normal. I've rarely ever had a cat who couldn't deal with a new animal and I've never had a cat who just loved a new animal family member on the very first day.
@rachielle3 Drooling is usually perfectly normal. I think it's related to relaxation and purring, Some cats do it, and some don't. If you're particularly worried, then visit your vet, but I'm not aware of it being any cause for concern.
i remember when i first got a black kitten. we introduced him to the white cat and he kept on harrasing her. plus he was a bit mishevios so i named him jack. because sometimes he goes from cute little jack to cute little jackass. i love him anyway =^D
@salvolondon We believe so - Freya was rescued from a kitten farm when she was 6, and she was one of the breeding queens, so it's quite likely that she had multiple litters..
-continued- why are they behaving like that? did i introduce them wrongly? are they just not compatible? and if they meet each other these days, one cat will hiss and the other will stay stock still. my older cat will try to punce on my new cat playfully these days, but my old cat doesn't seem to be having none of it.
so, basically, what i'm asking is: how do i get them to become friends and stop fighting?
we introduced a new cat to our current long term established cat a few months ago, it started off with the two completely avoiding each other. no curious behaviour what so ever, and a few weeks past and the two started fighting, like really agresively fighting. i can remember the new cat strole up to me casually while my old cat was sleeping on my lap, watched my old cat for a while, then violantly jump up and scratch both me and my old cat.
Awwwww ! At 7.00 its so cute when Teego starts meowing to himself :D and then at 7.28 it looks like they are shaking hands :D we are rescuing a kitten or maybe 2 in january :) x
I want to thank you so much. This video helped us greatly in introducing our new kitten to our long established cat. They're on their way to getting to know one another, and Freya and Teego went along way to assuage our worries. Again, Thanks a bunch
im getting a kitten tomorrow, and i also have a very large cat in the house, i wonder how they will react when my cat sees a kitten walk come through the door :D
@Spazzosity You'll notice in the film, Teego spent 3 days in a separate room with Freya sniffing at the door and getting used t his smell. I think this is one of the most important things for getting them to get along together!
@MikroBadass No, we didn't clip her claws :-) The best advice is to keep the kitten locked away in another room for a few days, so they can sniff eachother through the door... and then the introduction wont be such a surprise.

i remember when i first got a black kitten. we introduced him to the white cat and he kept on harrasing her. plus he was a bit mishevios so i named him jack. because sometimes he goes from cute little jack to cute little jackass. i love him anyway =^D

I love at 5:00 when Freya very clearly knows he's there but pretends she doesn't anyway so he can get her tail. So very cute.

did freya ever had kittens?
salvolondon 1 year ago
@salvolondon We believe so - Freya was rescued from a kitten farm when she was 6, and she was one of the breeding queens, so it's quite likely that she had multiple litters..
chrisbitz 1 year ago
@chrisbitz so i guess she had a pretty strong maternal instinct through the younger kitten

this gives me hope that one day i will be able to introduce another kitty to my household and not have it be a disaster.

-continued- why are they behaving like that? did i introduce them wrongly? are they just not compatible? and if they meet each other these days, one cat will hiss and the other will stay stock still. my older cat will try to punce on my new cat playfully these days, but my old cat doesn't seem to be having none of it.
so, basically, what i'm asking is: how do i get them to become friends and stop fighting?
ravercorum20 1 year ago
aww the bit at the end is really heart warming :D
we introduced a new cat to our current long term established cat a few months ago, it started off with the two completely avoiding each other. no curious behaviour what so ever, and a few weeks past and the two started fighting, like really agresively fighting. i can remember the new cat strole up to me casually while my old cat was sleeping on my lap, watched my old cat for a while, then violantly jump up and scratch both me and my old cat.

That little kitten is fearless; I think the bigger cat is a bit intimidated.

Spazzosity 1 year ago
@Spazzosity You'll notice in the film, Teego spent 3 days in a separate room with Freya sniffing at the door and getting used t his smell. I think this is one of the most important things for getting them to get along together!

did you clip Freya's claws? lol :) this video is very very encouraging to me since I'm trying to do the very same :)
MikroBadass 1 year ago
@MikroBadass No, we didn't clip her claws :-) The best advice is to keep the kitten locked away in another room for a few days, so they can sniff eachother through the door... and then the introduction wont be such a surprise.
