Omigosh, The Mothers-In-Law AND the Seeds? In the same living room?? Surely I've stepped into an alternate universe....where amazing things can happen!
Close your eyes and listen. Really honest, raw and rough rock music from the mid 60s. Open your eyes and ears to discover the amount of relatively unknown bands that existed during that period. Listen for example to The Misunderstood, The Puhdys and of course THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". What a bloody feeling and "drive".
I never cared much for the Seeds. Sky Saxon's frantic dancing would have been cool coming from an 18 year old lead singer, but was almost 30 at the time.
This is every 60's teenager's fantasy, slipping acid to their mom and dad and all their friends at a cocktail party. It will be far out to see those squares freak out.
is he lip syncing? it sounds almost like the record. what was the story line, why would the Seeds be in this sitcom? I wish I could see the whole episode.
@Deneb33 Hey, if you want to see a very high-quality excerpt of this episode that provides a little more insight, search YouTube for "MILExtended." Don't ask me why the video is titled MILExtended, but it is. The Seeds made a cameo appearance on the TV sitcom The Mothers-in-Law, and their band name on the show is The Warts. The Warts! I always find it amusing. Anyway, check it out. Hope that helps.
@Deneb33 No problem. And there's another little clip with the Warts (Seeds) in it that I assume is the end of the episode. The video is titled "When the Seeds met Joe Besser." The quality isn't too great, though.
@emak05 Daryl Hooper? Let him know that he is a genius on keyboards. His musical style and approach has always been brilliant, always been my favorite.
@ekocentric I grew up in the bay area of northern california and this song received major airplay back then along with most of the other bands out of Los Angeles california.
@MrSmokeydog There were a lot of groups from the bay area and they had their own sound.
I grew up in L.A. near LAX. The bay area must have been a lot of fun in the 1960's. Are you old enough to remember any of the Timothy Leary "Turn on, Tune in, Drop out" action? They must have scared the hell out of the people over the age of 40. LOL
@ekocentric I lived on the other side of the bay in castro valley and my older sister saw the Doors and Hendrix
and the Who and the Stones. In fact on my side of the bay the Yardbirds made their bay area debut at a roller rink that I skated at as a kid. I did'nt get into the whole acid scene until later and became a Deadhead for a while.
@ekocentric The best way to get into the Seeds is to listen to ALL their stuff. They wrote some of the best cuts of the 1960s, in my opinion. Their sound is unparalleled.
@ShapelyDice Good idea. I'm getting ready to do that....but I still don't know why this group escaped my lists of 60's who's who. Maybe I have heard their music and didn't realize.
Better be careful....If your "pushin too hard" your gonna get a lot more than just "gassy" Now u know where the lead singer got his nick-name,"skidmark!"
WOW THAT BLONDE CAN REALLY SHAKE HER ASS. I WENT OUT WITH HER ONE TIME BUT WE QUICKLY BROKE UP BECAUSE SHE SAID I WAS "PUSHIN TOO HARD" SURE GONNA MISS HER.
I am pretty lucky to have been able to see Sky Saxon perform Push'n Too Hard at the House of Blues in Hollywood. He guest appeared with The Damned on Halloween night. I saw him living in his van, just outside the HOB. I didn't have a clue. He had large white framed sunglasses on. Old and wrinkled. Just sitting in his van. The date was 10/31/09. Saw him walk into the HOB, sunglasses on, looking around like "you people don't have a clue". I didn't know until he took the stage midway through. Cool!
This is so uncool!! I guess music has come a long way sing this old skool stuff. Nuthing beats Jay Z, 50 Cent, Timbaland, Snoop Dog, Kanye West and Eminem!!!
Funny - when I think of Sky Saxon and the Seeds I always have this image of them having hair down to their waists - but their hair was nowhere near that long. This is a great clip; Thanks!
@weightfeather1 Like the time a bunch of us were in a cheap hotel in Miami in 1969, listening to The Dead and gearing up to see them at the music festival the next day. Everyone was just about passed out when suddenly we hear this "bang bang" on the door and it was the manager, not only threatening to kick us out on our teenaged butts but to kill us all, just for good measure! That sure as hell sobered us all up pretty quickly! Memories!
This has to be the completely simplest hit song ever. 2 chords is all the whole song is, plus a little bit of amateur doodling around by the keyboard player & guitarist. Kind of a lame song actually
The honest dancing. The obviously not-live soundtrack. The unrefined camera work. The haircut. The man who doesn't enjoy the music impersonating a man who doesn't enjoy the music, And so on...
Long live these four geniuses.
