  • amazing.... would you mind telling me the title of the song???

  • pretty nice..

  • that is pure Creativity!

  • are these for sell??

  • Nice work, very creative.

    Congratulations!

    Roberto - Brasil

  • wow nice workshop, and too much talent I hope one day I could carve in that place

  • Thank-You for your reply taniwharua....I have done some relief carving. And will surely buy AMIGO, by Black Slate. Thats a must for my studio and thinking of the wonderful carvings you fellows do.

  • im tryn to carve a taiaha but one of bits of wood split... any idea how long does the wood take to dry b4 ya can strip the bark off?

  • @kiwirap kia ora ehoa, nga mihi, I would recommend selecting a split free native wood, try Maire or Rata especially for a taiaha depending if its function or display,

if display can use totara, Taiaha are hard to come by these days, & most carvers are tested when carving one, cheers

  • @kiwirap best way to be sure your wood wont split is if you let it dry with the bark still on it for a year

  • @dragonsbane151 thanx man my mau rakau teacher found me a hard wood plank going good so far... the grunty bit of the blade is hard work, but got the general body shape working out... then the head is gonna be fun... like im leaving that till last... kind of don't like the idea of standing it on the ground on its head well i work on it... cheers

  • mahi whakairo,, tumeke!

  • wow. everyone learning, havin fun, n listenin to their ipods.

    whats better?

  • Really nice work ! What types of wood is usually used there ? It seems to take details nicely.

  • @lunhil12 tena koe ehoa, the wood in the video is mainly totara (google it) but we also carve others like Kauri, Matai, Rata for weapons & a few others, cheers

  • Love the music......Just can't break away from it. The carving is so awesome and the fellow at 1:36 does a little flirt so cute. I've watched many wood carving videos and this is about the most relaxed one I've seen. Some will go into great detail about a 100 ways to gouge yourself. Enough to scare the willies out of the new carver. Any hobby a person pursues has safety issues attached.

  • @marle2242 tena koe, to many mind no good for the wood, most of the carvers there would only cut themselves a dozen times over a period of 3years, * if they did its because they mind was somewhere else, ae still love this song, AMiGO black slate.. cheers

  • chur brada!! Charlie Here bro. Nice Maori woodcarving vid

  • Good video,I heard Our early ancestors used to karakia around the kauri tree for hours after selecting it for its purpose, as we were so close to nature, then Victoria,s soldiers just came in and mowed the the kauri down with there handsaws,a total disrespect that horrified the tangata whenua.

  • Whats the name of the song you use for the first 3 minutes?

  • Amego-by Black Slate

  • Turning roll, pull, sweep, like surf. Art like the four. Sometimes waiting; your peace is at hand. Very nice work most will never understand.

  • Very cool - I just spent six and a half years photographing Lyonel Grant carve the new house at Unitec - he's amazing and it was the experience of a lifetime. Both he and Te Ratahi Ratahi, who also worked there, are graduates of this school. Kia ora ki te rangitira, Ta Apirana Ngata.

  • Mihinui ki a koutou katoa o te ao hou,

Thankyou all for your positive messages & support & for taking the time to watch our movie, it really helps people understand our art without words.

    mauriora!

  • oops!! that was "whiua" not "whuia"..cher!!

    ka pai!!

  • {Kotia te pu..waiho i konei,

kotia te kauru waiho i ko na}.......whuia tonu nga maramara koutou ma,mo ake tonu atu e...tuturu awhitia whakamaua kia TINA!!!....TINA!!..haumi e hui e...TAIKI E!!

  • unfortunately i'm a townie maori who can't speak tikanga reo..

    but great vid.

it really made me happy to see maori carving in the modern age.

even if you fallas are from the central area.

    keep it up.

  • tino ataahua, mauri ora e hoa ma o te mahi toi.

  • way 2 to do it nga uri o te puia whakairo lol mean as iwi tuff as bruthaz. na dj richy rotovegas

  • You are an idiot, the maoris have been in NZ for around a thousand years, and they still have wood to carve with because they used their resources sustainably.

The amazon has seen a roughly 20% depletion in 40 years because of the west, and what do we use it for?

  • Tena koe ehoa ma!!

  • IKEAAAA :D

  • LOL!!!! Too true mate!

  • I agree co7in...the west is destroying the beauty and sanity of this world....everything is just dog eat dog, hatred, racism, bigotry, and closed mindedness....If people lived the way they did in polynesia, we'd be a happy planet!

  • jah na go!!! cher brothers o te whao a te aronui a rua !!!

na te jedi kotahi rau!!!!! doitz!!

  • BRAVISSIMI

  • all these guys are crazy good but the dude from 1:40 to 2:35 is freakin awesome, to get that kind of detail on a staff, thats nuts. good music too,5 stars.
