  • one of the great artist`s of all time.Welcome to the rock and roll hall of fame

  • good stuff love the way he tells stories

  • Thanks for posting this,SarahV!

  • imagine you have waits as an uncle...

  • id love him!

  • Nighthawks it is...but so cool... :D

  • Takk så mye SaraV. dette er noe av det bedre jeg har sett av vår mann Tom.

  • I really wanted some of the Danish subtitles to go '???????' at some point.

  • this is what i sound like when i am really drunk. i just ramble on about the most random things.

  • "stood on the corner of 5th and Vermouth, we did!"

  • "It was the hips that got the tips"

Oh Tom. I am strangely attracted to you.

  • how old is Tommy there?...18?

  • @Tommyfazz 26 or 27

  • @Tommyfazz He must be 28. He's born in '48, IIRC.

  • i was talking to my grandpa about Tom Waits and he told me he met Waits back in the late 70s in a back alley in Downtown Los Angeles, drinking wine with alot of black blues artists, and he said Waits was always imitating their voices and ramblings

  • 'Don't take the train, let the train take you.'

    Perfect!

  • To be honest, Tom Wait's career started out as a songwriter for others. But he found his own groove in the "spoken word/50's Beat Poet" style. And, in all of his songs that sound so chaotic, remember that he wrote and scored every diametrically opposed harmony. Total genius......all done with minimal instrumentation. Once again ~ Total Genius!

    OUTSIDETHEBOCKS

    REMEMBER: Love wins. EVERY time!

  • For one... some people are just themselves. They aren't drunk. Tom Waits is a storyteller and he puts on a great act. You don't really know if he is drunk or not, but I know I have been drunk & encountered drunk people. They don't act like this, and if they do - point me to 'em. I'll watch and be entertained.

  • Some of the lyrics are also used in 'Step Right Up' off the 'Small Change' album. This is the first time I've seen Tom performing live but I've loved his music since 1976. Jesus Christ he's awesome.

  • The live version of New Coat of Paint is way cooler than the album version. Is there anywhere I can download this?

  • why the fuck isnt music like this anymore...i mean i like a lot of different stuff but it seems like no one keeps it real anymore...all i seem to hear from modern music is flash and excess..emotion in music is loosing touch if you ask me

  • Do you reckon this kind of Tom Waits stuff is proto-rap, talking blues, jazz poetry or something else altogether?

  • The first real song is called; New coat of paint from "The heart of Saturday night(1974)"

  • Whats the first song called?

  • it doesn't fail...it is brilliant...i dig it ..sure he's posin'..it's like the early stones or dylan ...they all posed it up as blues guys or woody guthrie...and then they accumulated experience and became the real thing...and tom has been the real thing for a real long while now.....the dude was pretty original..louis armstrong voice and kerouac/bukowski lyrics....from everything i've read the dude lived the life

  • My all time favourite getting drunk video. im drinkingnow and the fact is tomw aits is the man. if more people ewre like waits we'd be in ab etter world. I'll drink to that!

  • TUII -typing under the influence of inoxicants

  • He's trying something. It's like scat, only the lyrics are coherent.

    It fails. But it's brave.

  • It's the mood.

For me it perfectly takes me to that first bar I walk into in the town I just got to. Like killing time during a 14 hour bus layover.

  • Thank goodness you're here to tell us whether it's a SUCCESS.

  • It's called spoken word, and he's either drunk or pretending to be. For his whole career he has been known for drunken rambling's in place of actual singing.

  • Maybe the first third of his career. He pretty much stopped drinking in the 80s.

  • @SarahV yea but drinkin stays with you forever...as much as many of us wish it wouldnt

  • this just seems like a load of lines from his other songs stuck together. but its fucking sweet

  • don't know what he's..but i likes the way he says it...

  • Does anybody know if he is making the "lyrics" up as he is going along?

  • what a silly question... actually no its not haha

  • He's just making up a story

  • Its possible :)

  • Happy 60th Birthday Tom

    Thanx fer the music, matey

  • What language are the subtitles in? Is it Nordic...Icelandic...thanx for the post. All TW is exceptional in it's own way! OUTSIDETHEBOCKS

  • I guess they're in danish

  • It's Danish, it's a TV special made by and for Danish TV. And the 'Elephant Beer' is for real as well, it's a Danish heavyweight beer; containing about 11% alcohol, am I right (adressing Danish TW-fans here)? A sixpack in the summer sun will make you a lost war hero if you drink it as fast as ordinary beer...be forewarned or get shanghaied.

  • the elefant beer is a strong beer, but it contains "only" 7,2 % alcohol. just to correct ;)

  • can't knock the man.. he's a genius!!

  • This is so fucking awesome

  • Isn't it though!

  • Hehe no hes not born in a taxi. Don´t you get it. Hes full of bull shit ;D

  • It`s amazing to me that so many people think that the " being born in a taxi" story has any bearing on this man`s art.

  • no but the fact that he once performed open heart surgery in a moving taxi with a ballpoint pen while babysitting Roy Orbison says a lot about the man

  • The polite way to say it is that Tom is one of the last living tall tales. I mean, his father was an exhaust manifold and his mother was a tree, as he also says.

  • yeah, because he was full of experience. He was born in a taxi and traveled from place to place doing odd things until being discovered at 21. That'll put experience on you.

  • Even at a young age, Toms voice sounds full of experience.

  • Very handsome :)

  • i love it!

  • see he's always had heart, so sexy mr. tom waits....WHAT a night....

  • hahaha i love him, it's like he's drunk all the time lmao

  • well, before he quit drinking, yes.

  • this is what i sound like when im really f'd up

  • you wish

  • btw Those Elephant Beers fucking kicks you into a great portion of pure drunkness

  • i think this is the best televised preformance of him

  • today we had a talk with a bum, and the way he talked to us, was a lot like this.

  • theres no dvdv for this shit... .... i been tryin to find one soo fuc king bad.....

    getcha pull

  • THE JONAS BROS RULE!!!!!11!!1!!

I'm sorry, there seems to be something wrong with that sentence

    THE tom waits RULE!!!!!11!!1!!\

    Thats better...

  • Which song i he playing at 9:26?

  • New Coat of Paint. It is quite different here from the studio version. I believe that one is on "Heart of Saturday Night"

  • yeah, really a masterpiece.. Tom Waits is truly one amazing drunk..

  • lmao

  • thx for sharing

  • can some one tells me the name of the 1st and 2nd song he sings on this video? I am new to Tom Waits and I have to say he's really good.

  • the Small Change album has a lot of spoken word stuff like this, some of the lines he says here are from the album, but he's improvising here.

    Tom Waits - Small Change

  • Tom Waits was at his best in the 1976 - 1978 period. There's been nothing like it before or since. Down and out, alcohol and tobacco-fueled poetry.

  • does anyone know the name of that second song?

  • a friend of mine took a train once...back trouble

  • Now where are my bongos?

  • Tom Is A genius. He is in my opinion one of the greatest ,most important musicians of the 20th century

  • Tom is just a friggin genius. If I could write like him, I would truly die happy.

  • does anyone know the name of the 1st song he sings?

  • genuis

  • This is great, does someone have the german translation?!

  • Hah, I just got blown away by the coolness of a cigarette, a drunk man, a tie, and a diner table.

    Tom's badass.

  • This is the work of a genious.

As if it hasn't been said before.....

  • well, i've had about five glasses of wine and a pack of cigarettes in the last three hours and let me tell you... i'd rathe have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotamy

  • though misspelled, - I couldn't agree more. Cheers

  • great sound. maybe the best of all his eras..nah, icant say that

the "pure beat" era of Waits always reminds me the "Muppets Show" you know what i mean?. i dont know why..the old fashioned scenery...? i guess back then they just produced programs that way...

  • wow, he is sooo sexy ...

  • carlsbery elephant is a wicked beer, its like 9% or something, gets you fucked, tastes good too.

  • Fucking brilliant...never seen this clip before...the guy oozes talent and creativity...I have nothing but admiration for Tom Waits

  • Where can I find the lyrics?

    Panta rei

  • does he improvise??

  • not quite.. he used at the first part texts from sevrel albums.

  • Looks like it. With the band playing bits from "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You" and all this, "that you know!" So, sure looks like it...

  • Hes the American parallel to Jacques Brel

  • it's very like night hawks at the diner.

that is to say fucking awsome

  • I love his style, it's such an old time sound. Nothing really like it out there ^^

  • yes it is lenny121

  • is the title Elephant beer after a danish beer ? :P

  • Thats why I searched 'elephant beer'.... but im not sure. Carlsberg Elephants are what I drink for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • Well i know there is Tusker beer... i think its from S. Africa. Tusker was the name of an elefant the attacked the original brewer of the beer.

Seems like something Waits might wright about.

  • This clip is from Danish tv so i think he's talking about Carlsberg Elephant Beer

  • Indeed it is. :-)

  • Tom Waits Fucking Rox ! hvorfor lige dansk tv :S

  • is that k-fed?

  • first of all, brad pitt doesnt belong in the same sentence nay, same paragraph nay, life as tom Waits. JEEEEsh!

  • He was referring to Tom's 70's sex appeal, not talent :) And I agree... wow, hot.

  • tom waits is america.

  • This guy's a damned genius. His voice is just -perfect-. He's one smooth, cool fucking cat. I love his act: movements, clothes, everything. These videos of him made my girlfriend go nuts. Brad Pitt has -nothing- over the Tom Waits of the 70's.

  • Tom is just the right voice with the right poetry. Great.

  • victor borge - frank zappa inspiration...

  • i sit hear drinking gin loving tom

    Peace

    xxxxxx

  • small change got rained on...

  • Just keep the camera rolling Tom can go at this for hours...ok well maybe he'll need a drink.

  • he doesnt drink anymoreee.

  • no even when he said this he was drunk:)

  • I SO dig this finger poppin' daddy...he's the STONE GROOVE...I've gotta crush on him! Thanks for all his vids, gang!

  • Doesn't everyone have a crush on Tom?

  • Great Tom.

Influenced by Kerouac's Blues & Haikus with Zoot Sims (check it out if you like vocalized jazz, etc).

  • I wish I could of seen him in the 70's. Great video

  • Sarah V!!!!!! I love you! Great job with the Tom Waits videos.Peace and God bless!

  • God Bless?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • I know this act looks phoney, but I still get it.

Entertain the drunks. The sad souls that can't find a friend to listen to their bullshit. They will forever be forgotten. Lost in the regularity of life.

  • No, my dear frankie50... How wrong. You will be forgotten much sooner than Tom Waits. Just check links on the internet about You and about him. Much sooner. How sad...

  • Maybe Tom Waits Borrows From Brad Pitt...

    i Don't Know?

    They're Both Smooth...

  • This is a young Tom Waits -- he most certainly pre-dates Brad Pitt by at least a decade and a half.

  • Something tells me you're not exactly the brightest bulb....

  • I have to hope that this person was being facetious...

specially cause the numbers 1976 open the setting..... Does Tom master this style 'o what?

  • tom waits is the best

  • cool

  • I assume this is from the tour that produced "Nighthawks at the Diner"? That is one of my favorite albums of all time!

thank you VERY MUCH for posting this!!!

  • i got to see a man about a dog!

  • tom waits is the shit!

  • See That Son?

That's a Jumbo Hard Case For A Double Neck Trombone...

    mattyofbuckley

  • cant fuck with tom waits

  • Some fine work...

    Smooooooooth...

i Think Brad Pitt Borrows A Little From The Early Waits Stuff...

    mattyofbuckley

  • Is there anyone better?

    Long live Tom!

  • compound fracture right here in the aorta

  • emotional cul de sac......bow legged women....genius!

  • That 'swimming with bow legged women' line is from that film Jaws XD the old sailor bloke says it at some point , good line though whoever says it :)

  • The line "here's to swimmin' with bow legged women," is from a VERY old mariner's song, so old that the original composer of it is more than likely unknown, staggering to think that there are many songs like that in our popular culture :).

  • Oh wow, never knew that, i only knew it from jaws but it makes sense i suppose :D as they say you learn something new everyday so thanks for the info :D

  • Dr. Fitzgerald Jenkins on bass and Chip White on drums

  • check out the great Frank Vicari on tenor saxophone

  • thanks for the comment , that's my uncle , he will be missed

  • How the hell did he submerge into the gutter for so long and still maintain his genius and his integrity? I mean, man, alcohol takes over after a while, but Waits is so superb and his presentations immaculate. I suppose it must be in his stars. He was born in December '49 - just like me.

  • You almost need English subtitles to keep up with him at some points.

  • uptown downtown all around the park-im half crocked and stumblin in the dark.......

  • God he's so kool

  • Great performance on "new coat of paint" here!

  • May God or whoever is drunk on the sky bless you, sarahV.

  • I have a recording of Tom Waits in Willimantic, CT in 1976... greatest performance he ever gave... in Jitterbug Boy he rambled, "Well it was him and Mickey Mantle and Igor Stravinsky and John F. Kennedy... that was back in the old days... and he says I was hanging out with the Pope one night, and who walked in but Hank Williams... so we called up Louie Armstrong and said you gotta get over here..." Sheer brilliance.

  • I wanna be the sax player. Just B.S.ing for 15 minutes while a guy like Tom Waits talks nonsense.

  • Tom is the coolest guy in the world! And he is sexy too... ;)

  • Awesome! Just Awesome Awesome Awesome!!!

  • Met a taxidermist in a restaraunt the other day he was busy stuffing himself...it was her hips that brought the tips...don't take the train let the train take you, friend of mine took a train once got back pain something awful...

  • he is so sexy!!!!omg he is so SEXYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

  • Danm that is the coolest rambling ive ever heard.

  • damn... thats all... just damn.

  • cool i like tom

  • Greatness. Does anyone have or know where one can find a video clip or some such of Tom Waits playing "Old Shoes - Pictures and Postcards" live??? Let a brutha know if you can. Thanks

  • thanks for the video just awesome waits sarahv your the best

  • This is great to see early Waits live, thanks a lot.

Subtitles are in Danish, or what?

  • Aye danish subtitles, i believe he made Walzing matilda after spending a night in copenhagen with a danish folk singer named matilda, at least he dedicated the song to her at some point :)
