@sgtnerf10 depends on the numbers gap. One thing i will say (applies to all games) if you can hold the tension in a position without panicing and going for an unlikely win (which will only lead to your own destruction), the number of times I've seen opponents do something rash which (finally) I can pounce on and win the game is unbelievable. This is the sign of a weak player - no patience.
@HistoryGamerDotCom ok thanks. i know a lot of people i've played risk with that always try to get as many minor attacks as possible while i'm just sitting there adding units and taking and lossing territories just for the cards. so when they're all weak and trying to avoid me, I play my cards and then it takes a few minutes for me to destroy the others and take there cards. And it just repeats over and over again.
@sgtnerf10 thats a perfect strategy. I also play that way, but you have to also "pretend" that you are weaker than you are otherwise the nieghbours will get jelous and come and gang up on you. Two player is more blunt I guess, but even so if an opponents attack goes badly and he hasn't the will power to break it off an oportunity to move the odds in your favour presents it's self.
@HistoryGamerDotCom yeah well it's kinda hard to hide your strength when you have 16 units in one territory and it's right next to an enemy territory with only 1 unit in it. like this
@sgtnerf10 There you go - it highlights the importance of how you play people. I once played in a game of diplomacy where I only knew one person. Sure enough I was the first to get knocked out. I couldn't penetrate their closed little club.
@HistoryGamerDotCom yeah that's the hard part with "alliances", you never know what the other team is thinking ( unless you have a double agent, which works great if the double agent isn't compromised )
we play that you cant ask people to move in return for something, or make alliances. people say stuff but normally everyone we play with knows right from wrong. lol, to fix the Australia problem with isolation and only on exit we have talked about connecting it to madagascar and making africa work 5 men per turn, what are your thoughs
I think very highly of North America. It seems that nine times out of ten, if I am able to secure it early on, I win. I try to take all of NA and one territory outside each of its three borders (one in Asia, Europe, and South America) so that I have 12 territories, then I turtle to the best of my ability and hope everyone thinks I'm weaker than I am.
@MaxStirner4Lyfe Congratulations! However you wouldn't get away with it in our games. As soon as someone starts to look interested in North America the others will make him public enemy no.1. The reason is (as in Europe) the number of bonus armies per turn is too strong against (the more acceptable) continents in the lower half of the board.
@HistoryGamerDotCom That's where you have to try and make deals so that others won't attack you. And, with phrases like "are you really going to be the one to try and tear down my control, while the others refrain from doing so?" can also deter attacks. You have to threaten. Then you have to judge whether or not to make good on your threats; not doing so could cause others to think you're bluffing.
Haha, I've got the latest (?) version of risk where you have to accomplish certain rank based missions and there's always that one guy who only wants to get me out of the game, regardless of his missions...
is expirienced player better than a stonger (numbers) player?

@A1voisin I like it. Particularly stopping underhand deals. Not sure why Africa gets 5 per turn, but the link out of Australia sounds interesting.

I think the diplomacy (or at least what I like to call diplomacy) around the Risk board is the most fun!
