  • Just wonderful. Spoken with real meaning and from the heart.

  • im 8 months old and this is my favourite film

  • 10 years late

  • is it me or does he look little bit like jackie chan :)

  • Damn.

  • There aren't speeches like these anymore. Time pressure in this type of ceremonies sucks!

  • Must be humbling, in a way, to be in the company of all those masters, and to come out the winner.

Must be. You can see it even in the way he walks up there.

  • He sounds soooooo like Robert Downey Jr!!!! Or at least acts a little like him!!

  • Peter Sellers should have won. But Dustin is still amazing

  • It surely beats "Meet the Fockers", no doubt about it! :)

  • I think he should've won for Tootsie as well.

  • hE LOOKS LIKE jennifer Anniston!

  • This was very well deserved. Nothing thou changes the fact that best picture oscar not going to Apocalypse now was one of the biggest blunders Academy ever commited.

  • Best speech ever.

  • no love in the comments for peter sellers?

  • damn im a 22 year old guy, i grew up with this movie n saw it recently, made me emotional when he kissed "billy" the kid. terrific actor! terrific movie!

  • the only movie that really made me cry

  • Dustin Hoffman is a STUD

  • Damn.... I would lose to Dustin Hoffman any day of the year!!!!!

  • Damn... I would lose to Dustin Hoffman any day....

  • Definatley a winner, Definately!!

  • Amazing but extremely true speech. I was thinking of John Cazale when he was mentioning actors who don't achieve the recognition they deserve sometimes.

  • These people dont know what they are talking about. They are high on cocaine.

  • How come whenever the president, or politicians, or lawyers, or law enforcement, or anyone else gives a speech, it's all scripted and read and unnatural and full of pauses?

Yet Dustin Hoffman gets up in front of the world and delivers the most eloquent speech from his heart off the top of this head.

Even if he memorized that, it's still impressive and he delivered it beautifully.

  • Wow, choosing between Dustin Hoffman and Jack Lemmon for best actor? That's as hard as comparing "Kramer vs. Kramer" to "The China Syndrome."

Both great performances, Both great films.

  • very sincere acceptance speech

  • that was nothing short of amazing.

  • what's the song playing when Hoffman was coming to get the Oscar?

  • The most honest and sincere. A+++++++++++++++++

  • It was an absolute delight to see you in person in the West End London, with you and your son.

Thanx sooooooo much for signing for me your autograph twice

  • 7:12 Is he trying to eat his hand with his own hand?

  • iT was an absolute honour to have meet you in person Dustin, in the West End in Trocadero you and your son.

Aslo thanx for signing to me your autograph twice :-)

  • Nice hair.

  • Johnny Carson- bringin' it all back down to earth.

  • @Blunic His name is Roy Scheider, one of the great actors of the 70s... 'The French Connection, Jaws, Sorcerer, All That Jazz, Marathon Man. Do yourself a favour and watch him in these seminal 70s classics. And let me know if you need help with the word 'seminal'.

  • Streep played a great villain in this movie...she really made you hate her guts. Hoffman obviously performed wonderfully as the victim and overcomer.

    Two great performances.

    Two great performances.

  • R.I.P. Dusting Hofmen.

  • @TonyDanza4Lyfe Hes alive.

  • @TonyDanza4Lyfe

    R.I.P TonyDanza4Lyfe

  • He definitely deserved this Oscar, especially since they screwed up, didn't given Wayne the Oscar for the Searchers in '56, and gave it to him in '69 for True Grit over Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy. If they had done that correctly, Roy Scheider definitely should have won. He was amazing in All That Jazz.

  • He so deserved this oscar!

  • ouch roy schieder got snubbed!

  • And there it comes another oscar only for this speech! Its for people like Dustin Hoffman that I still believe that its not about the fucking politcs, but actually about the talent and passion of the artists that work in the industry everyday.

  • robert duvall????

  • @deuvs123 Yeah, Duvall lost supporting actor for Apocalypse Now to Melvyn Douglas for Being There because they thought Douglas needed a 2nd, veteran Oscar on top of the one he deservedly received for Hud in 1963. Duvall was incredible and Douglas wasn't at all. That's why refuses to believe that Robert Duvall lost.

  • these are real actors, not the shit we have today

  • we all love you Dustin. You've given us the best part of the movie's industry

  • what an actor!

  • Aw. 3:16 is the sweetest thing I've ever seen.

  • wow al's filming biography was not bad even back then

  • @freddydahlgoldstein what are you talking about? Hollywood is mostly jewish.

  • Wow, the other actors didn't even show up! Maybe that's what gave dustin the edge.

  • Jack Lemmon was so goo in the China Syndrome

  • LEGEND!

  • Damn! That really was the best speech ever! Some actors today really need a dose of that humility.

  • definitely the best acceptance speech ever

  • jack lemmon may as well have stayed home with the other losers.

  • Wow!!!!that was like the best oscar speech ever!!!!!

  • look at al pacino hes so nervous hes frozen solid

  • 05:06 Justin Henry so cute!

  • His speech made me cry :( Beautiful!

  • Its so funny how he stands with such serious face but says hilarious things :D

  • that speech deserved an oscar

  • All due respect to Dustin Hoffman, but Roy Schieder should have won the Oscar that year.

  • A speech worthy of the film

  • Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman looks the same. Oh M G.

But Al Pacino has the most beautiful face ever. Just look at his face on his movies on 70's decade.

  • Don't forget Dustin, you also 'beat' the great Roy Scheider.

  • Amazing when you consuder the films that those guys had been nominated for... Extraordinary, wonderful movies. At the risk of sounding depressed, I can't help but wistfully reflect on the total dross that pours out of movieland now. Apart from the odd treat, generally Hollywood's standard has collapsed. It feels like there's nothing really to be excitied about anymore. Ah, but back then... Wow!

  • god , he's short

  • I think Peter Sellers was much better

  • johnny carson's joke at the end of the video = hilarious

  • Woauh this is class

  • why did t Fonda give a kiss.?

  • HUGE WOW!!!! I CRIED...SUCH A WONDERFUL SPEECH!!!

  • Why is every Dsutin Hoffman film just amazing...The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, Kramer VS Kramer, Rain Man ...this man is GOD

  • -- Dustin Hoffman is an amazing person. and very good looking =)

  • Great words from a humble man but the best actor was Justin Henry! Watch the movie the kid rules.

  • Hoffman looked pretty bangable that night.

  • Back when your acceptance speech could be as long as you wanted if everyone liked you enough.

  • Look at Meryl Streep being fuckin gorgeous!

  • @thewomaninthemoon r u fucking blind..shes a dog

  • that is simply the best and most beautiful oscar winning speech i have ever witnessed

  • Just listen to the complete awe in silence of his speech. A complete idol and leader of his craft... unbelievable.

  • Way To Go Dustin!!! Now a days they got like 30secs to talk

  • I LOVE you Dustin Hoffman<3

  • Either Sellers or Pacino deserved it that year in my opinion.

  • Yes, Dustin Hoffman is a great actor, but I think that Peter Sellers should have won. His Performance in Being There was amazing and greater than Dustin Hoffman's performance in Kramer vs. Kramer. Peter Sellers was one of the greatests actors and comedians of the history. He died some months after that oscar evening. I read that he was very sad that he didn't win the academy award. I don't trust academy anymore. Because of Jack Nicholson, because of Slumdog Millionaire and so on. It's a shame.

  • Great movies back in those days!

  • he said Robert Duvall? Wasn't it Roy Schneider?

  • @oliverandm

Rovert Duvall was nominated for best supporting actor earlier that evening for Apocalypse Now but didn't win. I think that's what he meant.

  • @RobertHolik

The speech was more moving than some entire films. Kids today must see this.

  • That speech & that man is iconic.

I cannot remember a commentary with so much meaning in the past 10 years of film. And that's not to say there isn't high quality today.

It upsets me how so much smut now in the 21st century makes big money, and how many mediocre athletes make millions but only show flashes of their talent.....And yet there were these broke actors in the 70s, like Pacino who slept near the stage at one point, who have done tremendous work.

  • Dustin deserved this, but Jack Lemmon was BRILLIANT in "The China Syndrome"...

  • and the winner is ....

    ....the jew

  • @esrapk asshole!

  • @esrapk Jealous German is jealous...

  • ...and now he stars in 'Little Fockers'!!

  • WOW .. what a line up ?? If I had to vote amongst that field .. I would've just said 'PASS'

  • Hey look it's Chandler's dad!

  • Wow!

  • you tell em Dustin!

  • damn..jane fonda is was so hot back then..early 40s.......

  • So cool Johnny Carson sending a message to the hostages at the embassy.

  • Now THAT was a speech!

  • He looks ridiculously unimpressed...it's really weird!

  • what the fucking crap. whole america.

  • Funny how only two of them could be bothered to show up.

  • @edmund184 - Well, for one thing, Peters Sellers died weeks after completing Being There, so he has an excuse.

  • Holy fucking line up. New wave of actors guaranteed to lose VS anyone in this list. A+

  • love his dignified smile. I don't know why but that reminds me of Alan Rickman's smile..

  • love his dignified smile. I don't know why but that reminds me of Alan Rickman's smile..

  • Amazing Speech Bro !!!

  • @RobertHolik i agree......what anelogant speech by a true actor.

  • great speech

  • His mama so loved that speech!

  • Dustin hoffman is one of the greatest actors of the past fifty years.

  • @JeanEtchepare I couldn't agree more

  • This is a real man. This is real talent. Take notes, new Hollywood, take notes.

  • his mum was like, i gave birth to that! yep that was me!

  • Beautiful speech and beautiful people

    this is real

  • It's unfortunate that nowadays they never would have allowed him to talk for that long.

  • I'm not Fonda Jane.

  • If an actor tried that now they'd be talking over music for 80% of it

  • damn the girl presenting the oscar is hot...hot

  • @flohthemachine that's young jane fonda...

  • that speech said it all about how difficult it is to survive in the arts when the blood of your soul is compromised trying to survive ,and the incredable amount of luck needed to be discovered...

  • one little big man

  • Carson is the man.

  • GOD

  • Dustin Hoffman always snuck up on us at the Oscars.

  • dustin hoffman is short. he can be awkward and there's people better-looking than him. but what makes him such a great man? it's his charm, his talent, his modesty and how smooth he is. kramer vs. kramer was amazing. this was a beautifully deserved oscar.

  • whos the woman with white hair at 4:26?

  • @TheAgy777

    She is his mother.

  • @korvetien oh :) thx

  • That was probably the best acceptance speech I've ever heard.

  • awwwww, his mum was crying... this speech was sooo touching.. :)

  • it was well said indeed by dustin hoffman, and adds more value because of the dedication with which he said it all.

  • Jane Fonda is smoking hot....

  • it's a pity the young generations don't have a clue who this amazing actors are , i'm 20 and i know thank god...

  • Jane Fonda's hot.

  • We need a host like Johnny once more!!!

  • this speech was something else!!!!

  • dustin hoffman is incredibly funny. meryl streep is magnificently beautiful. she's so pretty! :D

  • Oscar 2011 watch how a serious Award show goes.

  • gostoooooso

  • I have always enjoyed watching Dustin Hoffman in his roles. He always has given so much of himself in his roles that it is scary. He is a unique actor and person. In interviews he is always so unphony; his answers are never boring, unlike other actors who say the same thing over and over and over again. I did watch the Oscars the year he won for "Kramer", but I was so young at the time(15)that I don't really recall this speech. Having seen it again, I think it was one of the best Oscar speeches!

  • why wasn't he just honest and say he was the best?

  • So what Hoffman is saying is that he was thrilled to beat Roy Scheider. In your face Roy!

  • the body of work thing when they mention each nominee is a cheap shot. its ad if they were admitting we dont really give a shit about each individual performance. it also takes up a lot of time.

and yet even with that logic they didnt give it to peter sellers. i mean i love dustin hoffman but i wouldve liked to see him win for wag the dog. i freaking love that movie and he was great in it

  • I love you, Dustin.

  • What a great Oscar speech from Dustin Hoffmann!!

  • why werent al pacino peter sellers and roy scheider there

  • she does soooo look like Catherine Z-J

  • What Dustin said is the image of Oscar,I think.

  • back when all 5 nominees were SO good it was unpredictable, nowadays it's predictable

  • @SuperHeroMania Blame Warren Beatty. He started the marketing with Bugsy in 1991-92

  • @SuperHeroMania I was thinking just that...it's so good when there is actual competition, a tough decision to make

  • @SuperHeroMania

    indeed

  • Sellers should have one that year, for his body of work alone

  • @gscurling I remember being a kid, hoping that Sellers would win and being disappointed that he didn't. But this speech is the most gracious and inclusive that I've ever heard from an actor winning an award, and while I still regard Peter Sellers as one of my favourites, I am glad that Dustin Hoffman won, purely because this kind of sentiment is so rarely spoken by those at the pointy end of the industry.

  • @gscurling Many critics believed he would have won for "Being There" if they hadn't included that stupid comic blooper during the closing credits of the film.

  • THE BEST!

  • Wow, the Oscar's really took their sweet time back then compiared to now. Kinda wish they still did. Made it feel more epic.

  • damn she hot

  • Ms. Fonda, she's a bitch, she did not clapped when she named Mr. Hoffman. Her favorite was Jack Lemmon.

  • @catiroteccs she had costarred with Jack Lemmon in the China Syndrome that year; although she did clap for some of the others too, I'm sure it wasn't anything against him, though.

  • Oh, yes. The phrase "The winner is" was so unjust so many time.

  • maybe i have a biasis because of all these men's esteemed careers, but man what a magnificant catergory of nominee's.

  • Oh My God!!!

All this while i was thinking Cuba Gooding Jrs speech was the best....hell no...

This was the best speech EVER!!!

  • shieeet, what a classy motherf***er

  • I am his biggest fan on EARTH.. I have watched all his movies so far n I am DYING to meet him atleast once.. He is the BEST actor in the History of Universe, not just now but in the millions of years to come...!!
