There is no warning on my laser pen saying "do not point at airplanes or helicopters". What about beam divergence? Taking a 100mw laser and shining it a someone's eye at distance like if you where shining it at a plane would be harmless. It's only 1km at distance so the the dot would be the size of a tennis ball thus only about 5mw of light entering your pupil,IT WON'T BLIND YOU, unless you shine it at a close distance.

@metaleater9 most laser pointer beams tend to scatters over distance so it's no longer a visible beam in the air but more like a tight spotlight making it possible to give reflections of cockpit glass etc. So it could possibly be quite distracting without even hitting directly the pilot in the eye. Or if it hit some imaging sensors it could cause their dynamic range to auto-adjust which, blinding rest of the environment from the camera.
@metaleater9 generally not with pointers. i make my own lasers and a just a standard red laser module from aixiz is alot tighter and can be focused alot better than any green laser iv seen. even high end green modules. green lasers tend to have a rounder beam/dot though if thats what you mean. my red laser (300mw) can be focused so that over 50M the dot is no bigger than 10mm. the best green module iv seen at 50M is at least an inch. and thats a high quality module

NASA use green coz it can be made more powerful than red. 808nm diodes can be made exreamly powerful so even with only 20% conversion efficiency to green its more powerful than a red diode

When somebody drives at you with their brights on, it's harder to drive. When you are flying a helicopter it is even harder. And the damage comes from the effects of the laser (not the beam itself). the helicopter could crash and hurt someone. Lasers are fun. People like this make others look bad.

The problem is the NVGs the pilots use amplify the light many times over, so that "harmless little laser" becomes bright enough to blind them for minutes. Also, are you aware this is a felony? You get arrested for shit like this simply due to the fact if you shine a bright light in someone's eyes who is flying a helicopter or plane. You risk them losing control and crashing and causing death not only to the pilot but also people below.

Also, commercial laser pointers are made to be outside the eye focusing range, which include about half of the green spectrum. At that distance, I seriously doubt that it could blind the pilot, even temporarily.

The producer of the laser pointer could be sued for not having adequate warning labels, or the police could warn the child about the potential dangers of his activities, but an immediate arrest is just sickening.

@psyazax Well the one the reporter used was obviously less, but dude it doesn't take much for a <5mW green laser to blind someones vision from a distance if you are pointing it at them. When somebody drives at you with their brights on, it's harder to drive. When you are flying a helicopter it is even harder. And the damage comes from the effects of the laser (not the beam itself). the helicopter could crash and hurt someone. Lasers are fun. People like this make others look bad.

@zosoyoung yeah is stupid to point laser at eyes, but really, that laser cant do any demage. tv reporter say laser can cut and pop ballons, yes thats true but with 300mW laser :) not with <3mW especially at such a distance that as helihopterite.
even 300 mW laser should be set to double the scrutiny followed to make the eye problem at that distance. what happened was bad but even worse is when reporters say things that are not true.

The problem is the NVGs the pilots use amplify the light many times over, so that "harmless little laser" becomes bright enough to blind them for minutes. Also, are you aware this is a felony? I guess we should just let kids that commit other felonies go too, because they didn't mean to sell those drugs, or murder that person. It has serious consequences, so they treat it seriously. I bet he doesn't do it again.

Looks like the point here is, make an example out of this case. Hopefully showing other potential pranksters the seriousness of shining lasers in the eyes of pilots. the consequences could have been many deaths. just like don't go out and shin it in the eyes of drivers on the highways.
