Ben may not be the best singer out of the three judges, but he has the best "ear." He hears and points out what the other two have not heard or mentioned. And that makes him a qualified judge for the show.

He is an extremely talented musician as well.

Looks to me like a judge could force his way into singing with a great group of really great voices, and step up to the star position and do his thing with some REALLY great singers and then finish it off with such an off-key flat "GONE".

Ben's no vocalist, I'll give you bashers that. He is, however, an EXTREMELY talented musician. His songs are golden, his arrangements are incredible, I haven't heard one song of his I don't like. His charm isn't in his voice, it's in his over all love of the music.

I did what other comments here told me to do and looked for ben in old performances but his voice is the same. He isn't a terific vocalist seriously, but out of the videos I saw I noticed he was great at piano and that his lyrics are great. My favorite part in the video was when SCS sang alone and then Ben came in together with them. It sounded just right.

i agree that he may not be the best live vocalist w/o a piano under him, but his compositions are amazing in their technicality and harmonizations. he's got a lot more going on, with depth of musicality in the songs he writes, than almost anyone else out there...still was a fun performance to watch! i just saw he's going on tour with them...that would be a great show!

anyone who rips ben's singing in this song doesnt understand his mystique. if you havent heard the original version of this song, check it out and you should understand how awesome the arrangement was. i thought out of all the groups that did a song with a judge/or sara bareilles, this one was the coolest. i had goosebumps after seeing it the first time. Props to Ben Folds, King of the nerds!!

@aOKlady you sir, need to base your opinions on the overall rather than the one time you heard something...ben folds is not in his prime and he cannot do vocally what he used to be able to do...go look up his older stuff, and dont just listen to his voice, but listen to everything...the arrangement, the lyrics, the music in general, and then tell me he isn't good

I most certainly can voice my opinion of one performance. I don't like Ben's singing voice, BUT I do admire Ben's musical expertise on the Sing-Off, since that is how I know him. Obviously, he knows his music, but I still don't like his voice.

Also, even though you don't NEED to base your opinions on the overall, it's always better to look at the person in depth than just once. If one of your favorite musicians had a bad performance, or they were out of their prime and someone said that they didn't like them off that one performance, you would also probably tell them to look at other, better performances.
