@mckfrr Actually, what bay was going for in the movie was "shock and awe". Well, to do that, a long standing character had to die; there were 4 options. OP, Bee, Ratch, and Hide. Nobody cares if OP died because he'd just come back. Ratch couldn't die because he's the medic. Hide shouldn't have died because he's the ONLY weapons specialist/combat specialist; the eldest and most experienced of the autobots left. Bee is everybodies favorite.
To really freak the crowd out, kill the only medic.
They also had the original TF movie from 86 in mind. There Ratchet and Ironhide died, but Jazz lived, so many figured he'd be least likely to bite it. Surprise surprise they picked Jazz. His vehicle mode's car ceasing production might have also been a factor as well.

Primus doesn't have a side as far as I remember. He's the deity, more or less, of the Transformers race. Ironhide is one of the oldest surviving Autobots, which is what Palkia said. Might not be completely G1 accurate, but that is what Bay made 'Hide's bio as him for the movies.

That has to be one of my favorite slow motion parts in this movie. There were so many of them though, haha. Michael Bay sure as hell knows how to give a nerd goose bumps.
