hey bro, those are some awesome oscars you have. I've just got back into oscars myself. few questions for you. 1. what filteration do you have at the moment? 2 is that a UV i see in the corner of your tank? 3. at what age where you able to sex them? I've got 5 oscars, hoping for a pair like yours.
thank you... i was lucky that 2 out of my 3 paired up :)
Im using two fluval FX5 filters on my 150G at the moment... that blue light is a moonlight... i dont use UV lights as id rather have a bit of bacteria in the tank so the fishes have a strong immune system... oscars are hard to sex really, I only know becuase of which one laid the eggs... online theres posts about how their vents are different but to be honest ive never been able to truly tell myself by looking :)
best bet to get a pair is to buy a bunch like what youve done... they will pair up so you can tell which ones you keep and which ones to rehome... you dont want two males together or they will fight loads and upset the balance in the tank when they get sexually mature.... with 5 you have a good chance of getting a male female pair... good luck :)
damn, just had a look at the old vidoes, what happened to the tiger oscar? did u rehome him? anyway keep us posted with more videos. would love to see the progress of these guys..
yeah the tiger was the first guy we bought... we made the mistake of having him on his own for too long and he couldnt live with other fish well... used to be very aggressive... so he was rehomed into a nice 6X2X2 with some other large american cichlids and is doing well :)
yeah he's in the tank still... hes around 7-8" long... wont grow much longer i think (dunno as hes a hybrid of sorts)... though he seems to be getting thicker and thicker! hes a real looker now hehe
Im using mainly mopani wood from africa... I buy it at the fish store... I wouldnt put just any piece of woodin the tank to be honest as it could have toxins / tannins harmfull to fish, unless you know what type of wood youre using and if its safe, rather buy it from a fish shop ;)
its a great cam!!! cant actually get the quality that good for a youtube upload as youre limited to 1gig per video and the raw files are huge!.... yeah the one oscar is a red / tiger mix... thats the male... the red is the girl
if you mean the one swimming around in thats a geophagus standecheri.... if you mean the long snake like one on the bottom thats a polypterus delhezi ;)
Yes, sadly its impossible to keep a lot of cichlids together and not have fighting, but I think ive weeded out the main culprits now and the ones i have left in this tank all work well together
just give the sand a bit of a stir and siphon up the dirts that floats on the top... hold the hose near to the sand but not close enough to suck it all up
she'll need a big tank as shell grow huge... I reckon you could prabably get away with minimum of a 50-60Gallon or so if shes on her own, or youd need something very big to keep her with other fish as they will be very aggrressive and territorial in something small towards anything else
oscar will be fine in a 4X2X2 and perhaps a pleco though a common pleco will eventually outgrow that size tank... green terror will be fine in that tank on his own as they are far too agressive to be kept in a small tank with other large cichlids and will pretty much kill its tankmates when it matures.... though on its own a 4X2X2 will be perfect for an adult solo
nah the oscars are very gentle with all of the fish... the BGK seems to be getting along nicely and no one obthers him... the eel also dosent ever try to escape, we've had him for years now and even though he could easily climb out he dosent.
I remember having peacock eels years ago that wouold escape often, so i guess im just lucky with this eel :)
amazing tank. i have 2 silver dollars, 2 severum cichlids, 2 senegal bichirs, african knife fish, and an iredecent shark that i am going to put in 125 gallon tank but in a 55 now. would it be ok to add a fire eel to the 125 gallon?
the only thing youll have a problem with is that ID shark as they grow huge...
fire-eels will also eventually grow to be monsters, but youll have a couple of years to get a larger tank... fire eels grow 3ft long so a 125g (US) tank will be rather small when he's that length,. but you should be ok for a couple of years
ok thanks. i will probly get one and if my shark ever does get that big i will probly give it or sell it to someone who can provide for it. my tank is 4x2x2
Its a "Cukoo + Leopard" Synodontis Hybrid, dont see him much during the day, very active at night... tends to be a bit grumpy and attacks the other catfish (but hasnt ever done any real damage).
The Fire-Eel is easy to keep and a great fish... only difficult part is feeding him as mine (and many others this size) will not eat anything but live food... I need to keep buying earthworms (nightcrawlers) from a fishing shop as he eats about 5-10 daily.. also he eats live river shrimp on weekends :)
ive had him for about 2 years or so... but i got him pretty large to start with.
Im sure if yours gets to big for you, you can take him to a fish shop and theyll resell him... quite a few people want to buy a large one to go in an already established tank
definately not .... unfortunately a tetra type of shoaling fish is just too small and they also dont behave like larger cichlids and act like prey...the oscar will definately eat a tetra... the pleco is fine though as they are tough buggers :)
awesome job on the filming of the tank and fish its way cool in hd.. anyways just a quick question ive got 2 tiger oscars and there about 3-4 months old, is it too late to add a 6/7inch ghost knife? Cheers tam :)
you should be alright with that just give him plently of hiding space as they dont like light much and have very poor eyesight so like to hide during the day... also if the oscars try anything on him at least he has somewhere to hide till they get bored of him
thanx for getting back to me, i already have a ghost knife that size to add so that all good :) but im a lil worried about my oscars as one tends to be dominating the other, will they ease of each other over time or is there a trick to stopping it? Yours look so placid :)
Male oscars will fight as they get mature and eventually will have to be seperated in most cases unless in a very large tank... depending on how bad the fights are it could just be that they are getting ready to mate aswell... i appear to either have a male and female or 2 females... im not really 100% sure at this point but they are very gentle fish and dont fight much.
youtube only allows 720p HD videos, but the camera does 1080p... but yeah the mpeg compressions looks ok on youtube, much better than my old camera :)
yeah they were about an inch a fewc weeks back!!! now they are huge... and totally dominant... though i seem to have enough space so that they do harass anything too badly.
Yeah I am not 100% sure what he is becuase hes sitting at about 8-9" at the moment which is huge for a syno... and he's very stocky too and seems to be growing more... the patterns have a bit of cuckoo syno and zebra syno... so im thinking he's a mix of those
whats that catfish with the spots?

You could for a short while while they grow up, but essentially youd need something a bit bigger
