  • Finally someone who can play a song on a synthesizer without the doodling around.

  • Whats the Song at 02:52 ?

  • @Elfenastics All My Love - Led Zeppelin

  • I either want this or a nord ectro 3 hp. Which one is better?

  • Awesome playing ability. My favorite prophet 8 demo yet.

I would like to know if the Tom sawyer patch was altered from factory patch. I have 2 Mophos but yours sounds different than the Tom Sawyer Patch i have and would like to try and create the one are playing. Any Help is greatly appreciated

  • Awesome!

What preset did you use for the "all of my love" riff by Led Zep?

  • oh my god this was used for so many old videogame soundtracks.

  • Excellent Demo! Finally somebody is playing instead of talking

  • Cara, qual dos 2 te dá mais recursos, o Voyager ou o Prophet?

  • do you prefer the prophet or the minimoog?

  • Excellent, I like it very much

  • ha - cool - RUSH - TOM SAWYER ;))))

  • ha - cool - RUSH - TOM SAWYER ;))))

  • I THOUGHT A COMPLETE BEAT. THIS SHYT I CAN DO TOO

  • Love hearing someone play the synth hits on a good instrument. Thanks

A little more modern sounding than an original prophet; maybe because it's so stable!

My P5 is less musical after 20 years than I'm sure it was designed to be.

  • GREAT DEMO,JUST FANTASTIC I LOVE IT.FANTASTIC SOUNDS AND ALSO GOOD TRACKS

  • best damn thing..you're lucky u have that thing =D

  • whats that song at 3:15? like van halen??

  • @strictpolicy All My Love - Led Zeppelin

  • Thanks Carlos ...

  • Thankyou, nice demo... !!!

  • whats the name of the song at 2:52? :D

  • Great demo of an awesome synth! As for how it compares to other synths, it's all personal taste of course, but your excellent demo cmmoulin has raised my appetite to try it out in the store next time I'm there.

PS. For those interested in the popcorn track, the original composer of this song is Gershon Kingsley in 1969 - and it has been covered over the decades by Vangelis, J M Jarre, Krafwerk, Hot Butter to name just a few; the original 1969 video is worth checking out on YouTube.

  • Nice demo, thanks¡

  • lol the vivaldi hahah funny

  • hahah thats kraftwerk hahah what the fuck

  • What's the name of the song at 2:16? I know it's by Kraftwerk...

A very nice synth... I need it. Haha.

  • @ConnorMcLeanMusic

"The Model" from the Man Machine Album

  • Wow, one of the only new synths that seems worth buying. Great analog tones and I'm guessing a bit more reliable than the original prophets.

  • Omg you got talent

  • Standard popcorn arpeggiator?

  • @thrcman - You clearly Don't know what you're talking about thrcman. The older PEK can be updated with the potentiometer kit, you can get new knobs for it too.Secondly, new PEK's are shipped this way..they look great.3rd, the PEK is both Digital and Analog and has practically the same effects as the prophet but with more user features.Read specs and do some research m8. ignore thrcman comment it's not factual. The Prophet is a brilliant synthesiser, so to the PEK.I prefer the PEK for valid reasons

  • ahhh the prophet :D the only analogue synth i would ever spend money on.

  • i was in my local music store te try a moog little phatty, standing next to the moog there was a Dave Smith Prophet 08, i tought, let's try it. the first note i played i loved it, i left the moog behind and played for hours om the prophet, the next day i came back to the store to play it again. now i have to save my money to buy one of these!

  • I wish I could afford one of these... :(

  • popcorn was late 60's early 70's, i believe.

  • Some classic synth tunes going here--excellent!

  • 1.36 thats the pop corn song from early eighties

  • Buy a Poly Evolver if you can afford it !!

    Talking about versatile........

The best investment I ever made in terms of sound generation for Electronic music

  • hey write. I have the moog to cover my bass sound. Should I get this or the poly evolver to cover the rest of my needs?

  • Comment removed

  • @WRITETHESOUND Eh better OS? The Poly Evolver is more expensive cause it has added effects. I also feel the buttons are dirt cheap on the evolver.

The P'08 will sound great forever, and the Poly Evolver will lose purpose the day its effects are old and shitty sounding.

  • Then I guess you had more luck with your Andromeda than I had with mine. I experienced multiple lock-ups with the A6and wouldn't gig with it. I do agree with the fact that the A6 is the most versitale analog polysynth ever.

  • this is by far the best all round analog synth for its value.

it has insane output levels and signal to noise ratio.

better still its low ends are as good as its highs when running straight into an audio interface.

  • Actually that is wrong, by far , very far is Alesis Andromeda costing only 200 euros more, double polyphony , and 4 times more fuctionality.

    Its impossible to beat that.

Prophet 8 seems however to have a more "vintage" character. But ability wise, is so far behind Andromeda.

  • If you take for granted that the Andromeda has some nasty OS-bugs, since the instrument was never finished. The Prophet is reliable, the Andromeda not, which makes the Prophet a better polysynth for me.

  • I own an Andromed , its buginess is HUGELY exaggerated.

I experience no big problem with mine. But I own it for 5 months.

  • I love my Prophet 08 PE !!! IMHO it's the best analog polysynth you could get for the money. The next best thing that I know of that's for sale new is the Alesis Andromeda A6 and it's 3800$ up here in Canada. Otherwise you have the minimoog voyager old school which is a monosynth and 300$ more than the prophet. Also you can't save your settings and it doesn't have a sequencer. BTW at 1:25 that's an already programmed sequence called "No Corn Yet".

  • Oh mama, an analogue polysynth! Nice playing.

  • You can troll for free!

  • There is a difference between the two. I looked at the one that you said you had on Google shopping and it looks like it works off samples. The Prophet is completely analogue as well as electronic produced noise so you can do much more with it then the juno di.

  • yeah, but its digital. most people feel Analog sounds better. Juno Di is more versatile for live music, but an analog synth produces a more powerful sound in my opinion.

  • No you cant

  • Do you think it's safe to buy a DSI Poly Evolver since good Prophets are quite hard to find and it's made by the same dude/engineer Dave Smith?

  • Buy a Prophet 08. I prefer a analog synth.

  • Oh, thanks for the great advice! I just ealised that Prophet 08 is a DSI, not SC product.

  • @cmmoulin An evolver is analog.

  • @tamosfan Evolver is both.

  • @cmmoulin why do you prefer an analog synth?

  • @JohnF30Music He has a virus sitting just above the prophet you can see it in the video, its a digital synth and cost more than the prophet .... im sure he loves both

  • @sacredgeometry It also looks like he has something like a Moog Voyager sitting below the Prophet '08

  • @FratboyJim definitely a voyager :)

  • @cmmoulin the poly evolver has analog filters and two analog oscillators per voice - to dismiss it by saying you prefer an analog synth is unfounded.

  • @Nurikane The Prophet is just a gutted Evolver with all the digital parts taken out. The analog parts are exactly the same.

  • @Nurikane Polyevolver chain is NOT 100% analog. It contains digital elements.

    I choose Mopho/Tetra/Prophet for it's 100% analog sound.

  • I think I used to have a watch like that!

  • I am a bass player but want this synth..awesome

  • I owned this synth but sold it for Jupiter 6. It was too much to handle. It was too deep for me. 4 LFO's. Great synth if you know your synthesis..

  • Its the best prophet of them all... Came directly out of dave smith's mouth

  • hmmmm.. maybe I should trade my voyager OS... hmmm...

  • best synth i ever had!

    Believe me!

  • That opening is awesome. RUSH!

  • I've got an Andromeda A6...It is a true Analog Beast

  • Comment removed

  • yes for 3:00 led zep

  • 2:16 Kraftwerk, awesome!

  • what song is at 1:43 thanks i keep hearing that on a pep boys commercial

  • yay for 1:25 - 1:47 C64 lives on!

  • Depite my one gripe about patch selection....I really want one!

  • how you play the popcorn and the model?

can you programm that whole notes to an arp?!!

  • nice playing, I don't licke arpggiators in keyboards( they make you look lazy)

  • You're correct. Bank keys and patch select keys are better to change presets.

  • I'm sorry.A player of the 08 should be able to change presets like changing preset stations on the car radio...not some up/down arrow key.We need bank keys and patch select keys....like the the old p5/obca/JP-6/8 ETC ETC.Notice the vid crossfades into every new sound.Thats because its a bitch to scroll up and down looking for a sound..

  • well, +1 for the Andromeda then

  • If you could choose between the prophet 08 and a Jupiter 6, what would you choose? i on the verge of buying one of these, but im torn. I play mostly indie alt (radiohead(ie no dance/techno/prog). Im looking for synth that can get me organic-like sounds as well as crystalline textures

  • Comment removed

  • I've got prophet.

    It is simply amazing.

There's a a nice video of BigBoots from Radiohead with some images of jonny playing Prophet 5.

They use that synth most on Kid A...

Prophet 08 is simply the same instrument, but it's even better because of new technology.

Very hard to use it having complete control during a jam.

But incredibly powerful (on bass tunes too). And it is really a good source of inspiration.

    Giovanni (Rome, Italy)

  • It's not a supposed to be a replica of the P5, and sounds great in its own right.

  • Nice but still not as warm as the original P5.

  • how can it not sound warm as original? its real analog...not vst

  • As an example, i've read that you couldn't get the same sound as the original Wah Wah because the same inductor wasn't available anymore. So this comes down to characteristics of individual parts. There's obvious difference in sound on the various CEM chips. Here's two saws from CEM3340 (used in for example OB-Xa, OB-SX, P5, Pro One): tiny url. com / n6qke4

This sample is from my OB-SX, and i think they sound a bit different than in P5.

I'm not saying P08 is not warm.

  • @lavakava thats got nothing to do with it really.

  • awesome practical demo !....seems this little offering is a pretty good alrounder as long as you're not after a finicky classic minimoog sound (only a minimoog sounds exactly like a minimoog).

  • Well yeah, rarely is a polysynth gonna sound like a vintage monosynth.....duh.

  • i can see the electric blue edition of the voyager glowing under the prophet :D

  • What's the name of the song at 1:26?

  • Hi, the name is "Popcorn" - Vangelis. Thanks.

  • you mean "Popcorn" -Jean Michel Jarre.

    Nice demo.

  • @cmmoulin

Popcorn is not from Vangelis, but from Hot Butter ;-)

Prophet'08 seems better than PolyEvolver, isn't it?

  • @cmmoulin

actually popcorn was written and recorded in1969 by gershon kingsley one of the great electronic pioneers. I guess this reply is like a year late though, oh well.

  • @cmmoulin Actually it is "Popcorn" By Hot Butter which was the pseudonym for Stan Free.

  • @cmmoulin

It's not by Vangelis..... the song is by Gershon Kingsley and the version we all know is from Hot Butter

  • @cmmoulin actuly its popcorn by gershon kingsley, (hot butter was a cover), i had no clue vangelis did it too! nice playing.

  • @cmmoulin "Popcorn" is by Gershon Kingsley, in the 60's

  • @cmmoulin

Your demo is cool but... Vangelis is not the one who composed Pop Corn (and I'm happy of that!!!). This tune has been written by Gershon Kingsley.

  • @cmmoulin "Popcorn" was made famous by Hot Butter in 1972. Vangelis has nothing to with it. They do both play synthesizers though.

  • @cmmoulin Popcorn was not by Vangelis!

"Popcorn" is a famous early synthpop instrumental, originally composed by Gershon Kingsley in 1969 on his album Music to Moog By. The same year this tune was released and recorded at Audio Fidelity Records label in New York City. It's known as the first electronic/techno hit song in music history.

  • @djzerobuck Maybe vangelis covered it... but it's called "Popcorn" by "hot butter" hahaha... sounds like I'm joking, but yeah... Hot Butter was the original group that did it. you can probably y.t. it.

  • @freezazoid Actually it was Gershon Kingsley. I made that comment a long time ago so I've figured it out by now :P

  • @djzerobuck : do you know the version by "hot butter"? because I'm pretty sure that was the first. It was a minor hit in the early 70's/late 60's. I don't know gershon kingsley though so maybe you're right.

  • @freezazoid Yup, I know it, but Hot Butter were a cover band after all. Gershon Kingsley wrote the original as a demo for Moog Music or something like that, so the song wasn't very well known until Hot Butter covered it.

  • RUSH! ULTRAVOX!

  • Belo teclado Carlos!

  • the analogue sequencer with kraftwerk is so fun ^^ and this have the juice of a real analogue without any reverb or external delay ^^ that's a good point, dave smith do good thing i hope another oberheim in real analogue oscilator will release.

  • hi! nice demo! i have prophet 08 too. wich sound is playing from 51's second? i heard flanger or something like. is it your or standart preset? i tryed synthesize similar sound, but hadn't no good result

  • Yes, while for example Andromeda is much more flexible synth, but it has lot's of features a vintage style analog just shouldn't have. P08 is just the perfect balance between performance and analog sound (also the price).

Great job Dave Smith! You give people like me a reason to live.

  • we are the robots lol with one finger

  • the model lol with one finger

  • oh, the model.

  • oh that's what it looks and sounds like when you actually learn how to play ; )

  • Outstanding performance.

  • great playing!!!

  • DSI now has the MoPho witch is a single voice of the prophet 08 put inside of a midi guitar effect size box... ONLY $400!!!!!

  • true but without the extra voices and the poly capabilities i feel it will lac its true capabilits

  • Virus polar up top

I figured out that in order to make any synth sound you wish, with what's on the market today, you must have:

    Virus TI

    Prophet 08

    Alesis Micron (or ion)

  • And how about moog? :)

  • Can't stand the Micron sound.

What we need now is a new multitimbral 8-voice OB-X from Tom Oberheim (at least supervised by)! An OB-X with "modern" features like midi, memory, and velocity but the same beautiful sound + a 24dB LPF mode, and maybe an HPF in series with the LP. It wouldn't be cheap (discrete analog), but i'd imagine it would still be in high demand.

I never see anyone mentioning the Studioelectronics stuff, like Omega 8. Is it just not known?

  • Studio Electronics' stuff is great, better moog than moog. And I heard the P08 was a lot like an oberheim anyway.

And to each his own, because I think the micron is pretty good sometimes (although it is very weak). To each his own.

  • Don´t know. maybe because people missed the piano sound in the p08....

  • Well if you need a micron with interface then get the Ion. Same synth, but with loads of controls. How did we get on the micron anyway? As for your ebay comment, I think your a bit misguided. Ebay is now filled with stores trying to sell product around the world. The myriad of product that is available at any given time is irrelevant to user satisfaction. It is an awesome synth that deserves the Prophet name. However it must be noted that the 08 is closer to a Prophet 600 rather than the 5

  • brother, the fact that youve compared the pro 8 to a p600 says it all. THe p600 was a diabolically bad synth.

Try playing a p600 really fast on say, a bass sound with sharp attack and listen to what happens to the sound...the envelopes will start to play backwards.

  • Close, but not exact. The 600 had problems, sure, but the P-08 is devoid of these vintage shortcomings. The 08 is truly awesome and worthy of the Prophet name. Had one for about a month now and it still surprises me every time I cut it on.

  • Is all that sequencing/arpeggiation from teh Prophet or from some other midi sequencer? Either way, I must have one. :)

  • i want this prophet!i want it!i´ve never heared sounds like this!awesome!cool video!

  • Awesome. Simply Awesome.

  • russh!!

  • Que maravilha:^)tecladaço!!Prabéns:~)

  • Oi André, obrigado! Abraço.

  • how doo you get the sequenser to play different notes in a row? like on popcorn?

pls help. having one shipped as we speak. wonderfull vid of its features:)

  • Just bought one. Easy to use and sounds great!

  • me want, me want, me want :) :) :) :)

gonna be my first real analog. thank you for this nice demo. awesome!

  • Great video.

Whats the melody played @ 3:00?

  • All of My Love by Led Zeppelin.

  • Wow. I never thought I'd say this: But that synth is sexy!

  • superb demo and excellent playing skills :-D

iVE not got a better idea of the pre shipped sounds as well. Some of the sequences are a bti cheeky, but then theyre good springboards to tweak and shape to your own taste.

  • Yea, pop corn and Das Modell. Worthy classics for a sudo classic synth. :)

  • SEXY. getting the module.

  • I'm saving now........

  • awesome vid of the prophet 08!

  • natural im sure this thing can do just about anything for price it comes at

  • Are you able to play Legato and Sticatto?

  • Great instrument explored in the hands of an artist. You skills really show this instrument for what it is. When you can play, you can play.

I would like to have a p-8, but moreso your playing chops.

  • Glad to see this baby back !

  • wonderful synths

  • What is the third thing you are playing? It sounds so familure.

  • nice demo.

08's not as good as the Andromeda though.

  • I was going to Guitar Center for a few weeks in a row a while back, playing stuff like Subdivisions and Fooling Yourself. Tom Sawyer was in there too. I saw that patch on the Prophet and coudn't resist :)! But nice demo by the way. I'm saving up for one. I should be getting a job soon, so it looks like a bright summer ahead!

    Nice Voyager.

  • originally they said March so must be very soon I guess. About $1500 I think.

  • anyone know when the rack is due ?

  • it's also not supposed to be a replica of the p5 anyway.

  • as people say, it's much more versatile and punchy than the p600.

  • Nice demo.

    Great new Prophet.

Sounds very much like the P600 (looks similar too). I'm not sure if it sounds like the P5 though. It misses that silky warm sweetness.

Perhaps those sounds are hidden inside somehwere. How fast are the envelopes?

Also, those one note sequences sound very gimmicky. Does this Prophet have the Unison Latch mode?

  • caramba!!! só som animal!!!

    rolou até popcorn :D

ainda rolou invenção de bach e minueto :D

    show de bola!!!

    ;)

  • Valeu Patrick, obrigado!

  • Thanks!

I'm very interesting by the new Prophet, and I'm sure looking forward more audio demos
