NATO is a direct legacy of World War II. Oddly, its best function now is to help keep European states like France & Germany from attacking each other for the fifth time since 1800. The EU is also designed to keep Euro-states from stabbing each other, but it is a house of cards these days. See Comment #2.

We must not forget the NATO plans to provide membership to Georgia & Ukraine---How many US troops & missiles would you like to see deployed around Kiev & Kharkov in the next decade? I hope that Russia will cooperate on many issues, but NATO is not the forum nor the vehicle for this.

Yes, as a superpower, the USA has been able to borrow hundreds of billions of $ from other countries, & the US is more stable & reliable for bond holders than many other places. i have absolutely no idea what u just wrote, but i will reiterate my position.
NATO exists to destroy Russia and to do whatever the USA wants it to do. Russia has been demonised for many many decades to keep the people fearful/hateful towards the Russians.
for the size of land the Russian armed forces has to cover, its military expenditure is way too little. this leads me to believe that Russia does not have the ability to conquer and hold another country.

I cann't comment on this because I'm still traumatized with the USA concept of "War for Peace". The "international community" needs to invent some therapy for us who have to live in this part of the world where semantics has been turned upside down. We are dyslexic on the soul and we need treatment. Preemptive wars? How about supporting the arts, for example, as a form of of preemptive peace?

Russia has violated the START I Treaty and will do the same with this NEW START Treaty if it ratified by the United States....which I hope it does not. Russia has many more nuclear warheads(especially short range) than the United States. Russia continues to modify its nuclear arsenal while we dismantle ours because we "trust" Russia and we don't want to hurt their feelings.

here is what i think might have happened....
the american government made the defense shield in order to launch a conventional invasion or nuclear attack on russia without suffering the consequences of a nuclear response.
the russians dont have this defense technology so its a very dangerous situation for them.
the american government denied it was meant for the russians so the russians called their bluff and said ok let us be part of the shield then.

You must consider the following:
First, incase of a nuclear attack, what percentage of the Russian nuclear arsenal will actually have a flight trajectory over Europe where they can be intercepted.
Second, what number of interceptor missiles will exist (versus the number of nuclear missiles the Russians possess).
Third, the Russians possessed (and still possess) ABM cabability since the collapse of the USSR.
