Good job Chris. I don't give a damn how you hold your bow and I am guessing that you are not claiming to be the best there is but you are good. There are critics around every lamp post. Just ignore them.
maybe he holds the bow the way it feels good for him it dosent impede his playing to my ears take a look at jerry holland he holds his bow a third up the bow btween finger and thumb and he is one of the great cape breton fiddlers keep it comfy rest my case p.s well played.
I am sorry, but he does not play stupedously. I have heard plenty of people who play better. Should that come as a suprise to you, I advise you to go to more concerts, both classical and folk. To answer your question, I give a 'flying flip' otherwise I would not have made the comment. Also, I believe that bow holding has nothing to do with ability to play folk-music or classical well.A good bow holding is a technical matter which greatly helps sound quality and would benefit both kind of musicans.
I have to disagree with your assessment of Chris Ricker. Although I may be limited in the number of "classical" artist that I've heard, I've listened for more than 30 years to more "folk" artists live, on wax, on disc, etc. than I can count. Numerous individuals have commented for many years on Chris Ricker's mastery of bowing techniques and the sounds he obtains from his instrument. I suspect our differences of opinion about Chris Ricker relate to music on the "fiddle" versus the "violin."
Violin and fiddle are the same instrument. Furthermore there is no versus. It is a different way to play and a different kind of music, yes. It has always been a Classical versus Folks, and to be honest both sites are drenched in such an arrogance it makes me sick. I grew up with folks-music, however you can't compare the 'butterfly' to Mozart or Sarasate. I love music and not some 'ideal'. Putting yourself in some form of 'group' of musicans limits you. One can always learn to improve.
Yes, I know very well that the violin and fiddle are the same instrument. I just ran out of room and had to delete saying that for the sake of space. I play the traditional music of several coutries on the "fiddle" myself but certainly enjoy good classical pieces for the violin and orchestra. I agree many individuals who play one or the other gendre of music look down their nose at the other.
@t0talDestruct10N Don't you realise that you're undermining your own argument there? Don't put yourself in the 'hold the bow like this' group then. I can't stand it when people think that approaches to various musical instruments gradually rose to their 'peak' at some point in the past and are now holy writ. Good tone is subjective and approaches will always fluctuate, especially depending on the type of music being played.
I would also like to say that I have not assesed Mr. Ricker. I don't do 'assments merely on the basis of a piece, which is on top of all recorded.
I merely commented on the bow holding and on the fact that there are many musicans who are better than him. There is always someone better and that shouldn't come as an insult or a suprise. It's a fact of life.
Certainly there is always someone better but Chris Ricker is among the best playing his style of music. Have you listened to all of his pieces? I have - as well as those of countless others from a host of artists over the past 30 years.
From a classical violin player's point view you really can't comment on his bowholding. It is simply a fact that fiddlers hold their bows in ways that make classical players cringe. A few use a classical hold, many do not. I've seen many fiddlers hold the bow just with the thumb and middle finger - not even near the frog, and some even hold it like a shovel! There are a variety of holds. Many violin techniques are not used in fiddling so bow hold does not really come into play as much.
FANTASTIC INSTRUMENT...PERFECT MUSIC..SHOW...THANKS

This comment has received too many negative votes show
great, I like it.
But from a classical violin players point of view your bowholding needs serious revising...
I can't really see it well on the vid, do you use a flatter bridge?
t0talDestruct10N 3 years ago
It's a good thing, I've never played violin then or I wouldn't be able to play fiddle music properly.
I isn't very flat.

Who gives a "flying flip" how anyone holds their bow when they play as stupendously as Chris Ricker does???
