I have a Question, what is the average cost or more specifically did you get it for? I just won one on an auction at goodwill of all places for $50, but it is missing the controls. Also can I use a regular Genesis control to watch the LD movies?
voyage of the mimi! did you grow up in the phoenix area by any chance? that was around in the early 90s in grade school. i remember having to create the water distiller from the movie. thanks for reminding me of that.
\m/ to you having Heavy Metal on LD. I too want to own a Laserdisc player sometime soon, but I will have to invest in a rare tv that did 16:9 thats not lcd.
Which soundtrack is in that Fantasia LD? Stokowski's conduction or Irwin Kostal's* rescore?
*Irwin Kostal for those of you who don't know is well known among Disney fans for doing the music of Mary Poppins, Pete's Dragon, and Mickey's Christmas Carol as well as Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang and the Sound of Music.
People please help me. i want to find a video about pioneer laseractive where tha guy talks in funny way, sooner he switches the camera to another position, and while it's shaken, it's read "Earthquake =D", then in the end of the video he shows a Ren and Stimpy laserdisc and he says 'it kicks ASS".
WILLOW PWNS.....Did you ever read the continuation novels of willow set like 20 years after the final battle in movie? i think chris claremont wrote them with george lucas.
You know, its always a humbling experience finding out that what you think is new or cool has been done before. But for you, sir, it probably isn't, and that makes it easy to ignore or give a 'fawk' what you say.
Just to let you know, you are only half correct when you state that there were no chapter stops on laserdiscs. There were in fact A TON of LDs released that had chapter stops; some of them as close as every MINUTE of the movie or show. Also, LDs are the reason we have things like Special Features on DVD and Blu-ray's nowadays. The Critereon Collection got it's start making LDs.
When I saw this for the first time, I had only one thought in my mind: "I want that!" Even if I did have the money for it, it'd be a bastard getting the unit to my house in London.
We had one of these in a AV store I worked retail in. (Sound Advice in Florida) I never sold one of these but I played a LOT of Maddon Football beating my coworker many times, lol. Man I killed a LOT of time on that thing, I was a pretty poor salesman, lol. Aww memories.
the movie was brainscan at 10:06 not brain storm also i found the TG16 pac for this at a thrift store for a buck lady at the store thought it was a old pc floppy drive. so hit up thirft shops you never know what you'll find.
John, I recently heard one of your All Gen podcasts when you mentioned this and HAD to check it out. Really cool but I was disappointed there is no S-Video output for this, only composite RCA. Thought it might be a cool way to get higher resolution Genesis games but probably cheaper to get a Genesis mod anyways. Thanks for all that you do. Peace, Ken
You're wrong. Many Laserdiscs had chapter skip. The early ones didn't, but they integrated chapters into the majority of laserdiscs that I own, especially the boxed set movies.
i had a gaming console about 10 years ago (maybe less) all i remember on it was "Pioneer" i had games like road rash i remember the graphics on some games being good in my opinion. I had a super nintendo, sega saturn/genesis, PS1, N64 to compare it with and i played this panasonic console more than any of them. I had this one game it was a side scroller and at the very beginning i was a little kid running from some alien monster it was the scariest shit ever i wish i could play it again.
LaserDisc movies generally, not the older ones, have better audio then DVD and BluRay. That's because LaserDiscs, like records, use pure analog audio, which is why they're so big. Movies with 30 min per side are CAV or standard play movies, movies with 60 min per side are called CLV or extended play movies. Also, when used in a stereo system, LaserDiscs sound better then DVDs or BluRays.
what does that have to do with this video though? if you were an 80s kid you would just have bad memories about not being able to afford something like this at the time
Awesome you found the LaserDisc version of Heavy Metal, found the double-vinyl of the soundtrack myself. Only downside is that sides 1 and 3 are on disc one and sides 2 and 4 are on the other. Way for them to fail at consistency lmao
it sounds stupid but do the laserdiscs and cd,s share the same disc tray and/or laser,i ask this becouse it seems that the cd tray also becomes a part of the laserdis tray.
even strange i,ve readed that cd,s and laserdiscs can be used as both of digital and/or analogue media.
hey gamester do you think that laser discs are worth collecting ive been on the fence about it for a while but i love old electronics. oh and btw do laser discs look okay on hd tvs ?
AWESOME Laserdisk collection! I own the Definitive Collection of the SW trilogy(original release) on LD but many of the disks are warped from storing the box flat than upright. Got it on Ebay that way. :( I also have Star Trek TMP extra longer version but it is still in fool (full) screen. :(
This is one of the coolest systems...if you can still afford one. They still fetch $500 on eBay. I have one of these and I can do all kinds of things like play CD's, LD's, VCD's, Sega genesis and Sega CD's, Karaoke CD+G's with the Sega PAC-S1. Just like gamester81, I am looking for the US version of the Turbo GRAFX 16 PAC-N1 which plays hu-card and CD games of that model and all PAC's play Karaoke CD's as well. My system has over 175 LD's and 150 SEGA games. Truly a collector's dream! MY FAVE...
omg i cant watch this man anymore as a collector hes killing me a want to just throw up anything rare that i cant get my hands on he seems to have he has fantastic taste in everything my wife is gonna divorce me from being obsessed with this kinda stuff she likes to call it junk and says to bring it to goodwill 4 donations when i get my money it always has a plan to go to something i need b4 i pay the bills is she right? this is my nerdy hobble
wow, i just looked at ebay and there a complete unit with the turbo grafx PAC listed at 1200. i just found you channel today, amazing i grew up around these games but have never heard of so many of them.
Ha, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a classic of the late 80s and early 90s. Baby Herman had quite the mouth. Back when stuff from Disney wasn't about 100% innocence.
that star wars collection is a badass deal, probably wiorth alot. thats a a tight system bro. Great collection i've seen those collections @ half price books store for a couple of bucks back in the twin cities. yeah i'm a big sega fan and i want one of those classic systems u got there.
@Gamester81 i know you are rather busy with over 6000 veiws on this vid and almost 10000 subscibers but just curious if you know if the laseractive has an auto reverse feature built in so you dont have to flip the disk? i am actually considering buying one but am not sure how high end the ld player is a lot of ppl talk about how it can play games but i want to make this my first ld player and want to know if its a good one i would'nt waste your time, but its hard to find ppl who have 1 THANKS
@92greenz34 HI... I think the only player Pioneer made that was a double-sided player was the LD-199 or something like that. This system has to have the LD manually flipped. Kinda the only drawback to LD's, but they are nostalgic tech-geek fantastic, though
I'm really glad to see you made a video for this system. I have been trying to get a complete one for a long time. I have Over 550 laser discs, that I have been collecting for over 6 years now. Also four working Pioneer LD players. I got one of these to go with my large LD and game system collection, but sadly It was poorly taken care of before I got it, So on ebay it went.
The reason why it could play Genesis and SEGA CD games is because a few years earlier SEGA had a partnership deal with Pioneer to build a LD add on for Mega Drive that was scrapped early on in development due to it's expensive budget. Which became Mega CD. Pioneer still had a deal with SEGA to use the hardware for games and in 1993 Sega sold a mod compatibly card for the LaserActive
Excellent find, it doesn't get much rarer than the Laseractive. My school had a Laserdisc player, but I never saw anyone use it, which is a shame since I was always really fascinated with it.
The only time I ever saw a laserdisc player, until recently on youtube which spurred me to get one on craigslist, was in 1997 when I watched a science video in sciends class. The only way it would have been more awesome would have been if the video in question was Voyage of the Mimi.
The Sega Powerbase converter is not compatible with this unit and only works on the model 1 Genesis. I'm not sure about hte Game Genie because I've never tried to hook it up to this system, but my guess is that it would work on this.
Awesome man! Pioneer LaserActive is indeed a rare gem, and congrats on owning one!! I thought the PAC interchangeable module was a neat concept.. except for the ridiculous pricetag!! Also, sweet LaserDisc collection! Seems alot of guys here are now into LD :P
Way awesome collection man! I still have the remote from my Pioneer laser disc and one laser disc I refuse to part with, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5. That is crazy that those things cost so much when they came out.
I never knew they made laserdiscs that were not in the hard plastic sleeves. Those were the only ones I ever knew about. This system is awesome, I'm picking one up. Thanks for the upload.
I put up a video showing my Laseractive playing games and I opened both disc trays you should check that out. There's two separate eject buttons. One for the CDs and one for the Laserdiscs.
Ever since I first saw a laserdisc when I was in school I wanted one...I finally got one in 2005! Then I moved to a bigger city and searched for more movies...ended up picking up two more players!! Lol
I got my Laseractive for $80 shipped a few months ago. Then the Sega PAC I got for $20 from a youtuber. Deals are out there if you're vigilant and check daily.
@JerryTerrifying yup...picked one up barely used like new for $189 and used it in my Karaoke DJ biz for about 4 months when I found out how rare they actually are. Got a ton of movies and games for it now as well....quite a cool little system despite the rarity and the lofty price for the PAC N-1 ( most sought after module: at around a grand now for the N-1 ALONE. I am still searching out mine like gamester81...
I got one on ebay for $80 shipped a few months ago. When deals pop up you'vegot to snatch them up. Then I picked up a Sega pac for $20 from a youtuber.
Porky's is an awesome movie, very funny. Excellent lazer disc collection, If they had sold that system with the SEGA pac cheaper the would have sold by the bucket loads. Cool video
Great Review! I haven't seen one of these in person yet, so its pretty cool that you have one. ATM the only laserdisk videogame system I own is a RDI halycon.
I hope to add more to my collection once I save up money cause as you know these are expensive as all hell since pretty much any laserdisk video game system is rare
Damn dude that is awesome! I knew there was LD players that played Genesis games but I didn't know they had those expansion slots you could add in the Genesis and TG16 PACs. Man that's just awesome and it plays SegaCD games too. Gezz just expensive. Wow nice movie collection too! AHAHAH Brainscan I've actually seen that hahaha. Kinda neat in a cheesy way.
Its so great to see someone treating these classic legends of videogaming history with respect.
Here in the uk we have these things on sundays called carboot sales and ppl are always selling them ( classic video gaming systems) for really cheap and they just lay them on the grass and dont give a damn about them, i know it sounds strange but its really sad to see them treated that way.
Great video. And for people who are wondering, you can get other laserdisk players for a lot less than this one. This one is obviously top of the line
that is fucking sexy

I didn't know that LD players came with video game hardware. Is it the real Genesis hardware or emulation system? How does LD fair on an HDTV?
PearlJammer07 2 years ago
Actually Sega licensed this for this player. The quality looks really close to DVD on HDTVs.

PhatPhunk 2 years ago
I had no idea so many movies were on LD-- some of them aren't really that old. Neat collection!
nathanallan1 2 years ago
Way awesome collection man! I still have the remote from my Pioneer laser disc and one laser disc I refuse to part with, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5. That is crazy that those things cost so much when they came out.

I love LD's I wish I had the laseractive though but mine is still pioneer

where do you get all your consoles from?
ANDERSONSHAUN 2 years ago
I never knew they made laserdiscs that were not in the hard plastic sleeves. Those were the only ones I ever knew about. This system is awesome, I'm picking one up. Thanks for the upload.
Bozzdawg1 2 years ago
That system is ridiculous! Why would anyone pay a total of $1,500 to play SEGA games on their laserdisk player? I'd never heard of such a thing! haha

Was those Star wars movies theatrical releases or had there been changes made?
Kekzor1337 2 years ago
The Star Wars movies that I have are from the original theatrical release. They did later release a special THX edition.

RA7ICU5 2 years ago
I put up a video showing my Laseractive playing games and I opened both disc trays you should check that out. There's two separate eject buttons. One for the CDs and one for the Laserdiscs.

Ever since I first saw a laserdisc when I was in school I wanted one...I finally got one in 2005! Then I moved to a bigger city and searched for more movies...ended up picking up two more players!! Lol

I got my Laseractive for $80 shipped a few months ago. Then the Sega PAC I got for $20 from a youtuber. Deals are out there if you're vigilant and check daily.
JerryTerrifying 2 years ago
@JerryTerrifying yup...picked one up barely used like new for $189 and used it in my Karaoke DJ biz for about 4 months when I found out how rare they actually are. Got a ton of movies and games for it now as well....quite a cool little system despite the rarity and the lofty price for the PAC N-1 ( most sought after module: at around a grand now for the N-1 ALONE. I am still searching out mine like gamester81...
maestroaxeman 1 year ago
that is quite an amazing system you have!
and an awesome selection of Laser Discs

Awesome review and LD collection!

I remember reading about those systems in gaming magazines back in the day, but have never actually seen one, so this was very interesting to watch.
You have a great movie collection there too... a lot of my faves are in there.

Holy shit! This system is $3,000 on ebay! How did you get one of these?
Motherbrainzebes 2 years ago
I got mine awhile go with the Sega PAC and 10 Laserdics for $250. The demand keeps going up for these systems.

I got one on ebay for $80 shipped a few months ago. When deals pop up you'vegot to snatch them up. Then I picked up a Sega pac for $20 from a youtuber.

whis whole system was crazy man... so expensive though
TheDevilBurning 2 years ago
Great Review! I haven't seen one of these in person yet, so its pretty cool that you have one. ATM the only laserdisk videogame system I own is a RDI halycon.
I hope to add more to my collection once I save up money cause as you know these are expensive as all hell since pretty much any laserdisk video game system is rare
jordanv78 2 years ago
so can you play sega cd game because it says so on the pac ?
stingrn 2 years ago
Yes you can. With the Sega PAC you can play Genesis carts, Sega CD and Mega LD laserdisc games.
with the NEC PAC you can play Turbografx Hucard games, Turbo CD games and LD ROM2 laserdisc games.
JerryTerrifying 2 years ago
Great Find, thanks for sharing such history. Glad to see your keeping it alive, and you also take such care of it.
DesolateMinds 2 years ago

OffTheWallThriller 2 years ago
Great video. And for people who are wondering, you can get other laserdisk players for a lot less than this one. This one is obviously top of the line
