  • Wow! What a brilliant idea! Why couldn't NASA think of such a thing? :)

  • Buran was better than MIR. They should have tanked the MIR in 1992 and finished the 2 other orbiters Pitchka & Baikal and they would have been better off. Contrary to myth, the Buran was more cost effective than MIR was.

  • you can't compare Buran with MIR. Buran is a shuttle, MIR a space station. Different tasks... You could went to Mir flying in the Buran.

And about the cost efficiency, I believe that a Shuttle is not so efficient as a space capsule like Soyuz.

  • Even Russia is benifiting from US debt, after all Russia sells most of it's natural resource to the US and China respectively, the two largest consumer and producer. Debt are just part of global economy.

And what makes you think that the US cannot borrow hundreds of billions of dollars if it needs to?

  • US does have a lot of debt. It's defense spending alone cost more than all of the other nations in the world combine. Yes, US will have some money as it will borrow some more. And other countries are so willing to do so, since it's a good business. Credit is always a good business. Earning from profit. So, in a way the US has a lot of debt but other nations are benifiting from it. Global economy at work.

  • So Russia will be needing the help of China to achieve their goals? The NASA has plans on going to Mars I can tell you that. Although no solid time line that I can tell you. The planning alone could take 10 years.

  • No Russia doesn't need China, China is just involved, Russia developed China's and Japan space program. NASA has plans but they don't have the funding, America is broke, get it, there is no money left. US has $800 billion in credit card debt alone and the US gov't has $9,120,286,165,501.21 trillion debt. So you can forget the NASA Mars project.

  • Oh yeah, Russia by the way paid off it's entire deficit also all it's Soviet's debts as well.

  • That's a lot to be done in 4 years to achieve what you said. Let alone the money to spend on that.

  • The Russian Kliper is ready to roll, Russia is under way on plans to first launch to the moon and than to moon space station with China as Russia & China are planning the Mars mission but that is 10 years away and NASA has no plans just yet. Second the US Shuttle is old and costs too much to fly, they only have 3 shuttles and 1 is set to flying based on age.

  • Wow! oxforduniversity, you really are something, trying to convince someone with no facts or proof. Russia is filling the US contract to finished their part in the ISS. LOL? They actually have enough money to spend for the US? Let alone spend any money for other country? Are you kidding me?

  • Show that link that Russia will have a Mars and Moon Space Station by 2012. Show me the link that NASA is getting broke. NASA is spending more and more money every year for research and whatever.

  • The US Senate has made statements that NASA is over 1% of the US budget and NASA can't control the spending anything less. There is no money as a NASA engineer was on George Noory nation radio show to explaining why NASA is not getting enough funding and the Russian's have the money and the internation space sation is losing money from the US. I sent you the link.

  • Do you read Russian? Go under buran(.)ru, they have versions on there from 2005 and 2006 designs. It is all in Russian

  • No I don't. Sorry.

  • I will submit the links to view asap

  • Where are these new Burans are you talking about?

  • Russia is in talks to resubmit Buran Space Shuttle, after Buran hanger fail and destroyed in Korolev, Buran 1.01 as Russia built 13 Buran shuttles and an extra Energia Rocket systems are still available and Russia gov't has not closed the program. Russia has the money and there are also new Buran shuttle plans designs to build more from 2005 & 2006, 2007 besides the new Kipper & Volkan rocket.

  • Russians have the best space program in the world, the Buran should still be the preferred rocket for the Russians, it is still the most powerful rocket in the world, the Russians have and always have done things better than the Americans on space technology.

I would support if they would start the Buran program again, it was a great system they put together.

  • The Soviets have lead the space race but now it's the US that remains the fore front of the space program.

  • Are you pro USA? Your way off. NASA is going broke idiot! Russia has the largest Space system in the world and they have a mars & moon space station planned for 2012. NASA does not have the funds to even complete the International Space Station as Russia is over stepping in to complete the US contract.

  • Where did you get that informatio? Are you Pro USA? NASA is going bankrupt, they cannot finish the contract on the International Space Station as Russia is set to build a moon station in 2012 to 2015 and they are filling to finish the US space station on top of that

  • Really what are your facts that NASA is going broke? US is getting richer every year, hence it rakes in over $10 Trillion this year alone. NASA has plans to even go to Mars, as they have done it with Mars vehicle missions.

  • A great dream... and hopefully a dream that will be realised one day

  • fantasic post it looks nearly like my one !!!!!

  • yes, these are the same video.

    you have awesome videos.

    thanks for posting.

  • Fantastic post!

  • maybe a different look its not functional... for example, you cant change the look of a bullet... a bullet need to be what it is, as same as a rocket and Buran.

  • Why copy the american model ? I guess if it works, there's no need to design from scratch, right ?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

  • its not a simple copy

    it has several advantages

if you read about will see.

it can be launched and take on without tripulation, it was more efficient than the american model. it flew to the space just once, and proved be a very well done shuttle.

it was intended to built 5 like buran.

  • it had a ejection seat project to be installed on the second one, it could work anytime. even at the launch or re-entrance, in speeds lower than mach 3.

the rocket Energia was also better project than the american one.

anyway, in the cold war era, copy was not the intention. the intention was do better and cheaper, faster and more easy to repair. thats progress, learn with other's mistakes or improve what they made to reach your goals first

  • I heard it flew via remote control; pretty impressive. I just wished they came up with a different look; you know, just to highlight the Russians' design prowess; they'd really do a lot of business with 3rd world countries who'd want to send their own satellites or astronauts to space, without paying exhorbitant amounts of money and break the american monopoly.
