Free speech is immensely entertaining most of the time. There are groups like the Westboro Baptist church who set my teeth on edge, but they have a right to speech. Thankfully, the speeches from such extreme groups usually alienates most everybody else from concepts of bigotry and intolerance.

I'm pretty sure the entire point of free speech is that offensive speech is protected. If you only protect speech that is not offensive, you do not have free speech. The entire point of free speech isn't that we benefit from crazies spouting nonsense, it's that if you do not have it, whoever is in power can decide anything they do not like to hear is offensive and fallacious, and we cannot say anything about it!
I don't think anyone should be censored under any circumstances, they have a right to their opinion, I do not have to accept it. I can become or will become just as vocal in opposition to their statement if i believe it is wrong. But to consider all points or perspective of an argument does change the nuances of the issue. Free speech insures that all perspectives or opinions are allowed to be considered to the issue.

All speech should be protected, with the exception of directly inciting violence. "I'm going to kill you" or "lets hang us a black person" should not be free speech. something like "I don't like gay people" should be consider free speech as its not a direct incitement of violence.

If you had bothered to watch the debate rather than assume you knew both sides from the start, you would realize that what I found interesting were some rarely-known facts such as that the Nazi death camps were generally outside of Germany, that Auschwitz was in Poland, not germany, and so on. Sometimes people who are flat wrong will still make interesting points.

I think hollocaust deniers should be allowed their point of view. It could set a very dangerous precedent to deny them their freedom. Not a "denier" but I am concerned about the discrepancies: if the Nazis were so evil then why did they allow the red cross into the camps? Why did the nazi records of deaths match with the records of the red cross which are orders of magnitude lower than the numbers reported by jews, which keep climbing???

I tend to trust his, and all the other service mens, accounts of the death camps, mass graves etc. This was such a shocking and wide spread event that the UN created legislation in order to advoid future genocides. Infact the crime was so unprecidented that the word genocide had to be created for it. These things don't just happen. If it was a con hundreds of thousands were in on it.

Nor could they have collected such statistics since they were only allowed into some of the camps towards the end of the war. I'm kind of on the fence about this. On the one hand, I fear a slippery slope, but on the other hand, I think of people like the Westboro Baptist Church, whose "opinions" could easily be classified as assault.
The issue is, however, Holocaust deniers, genocide promoters, and the like are all denied free speech in hundreds of countries we hardly think of as "oppressive" (Germany, Canada, UK, etc), and I think the free speech these people have could be construed as infringing on others' rights.

The jews have caused the decline of all european countries by introducing their "peace-loving" ways to europeans which caused interracial breeding, economic depression, and overall overthrowing the original rulers through blood-poisoning. Plus, the Talmud refers to all gentiles (non-jews) as goyim (cattle) to be the slaves of the Jewish race. We gave Palestine to Israel for the Jews; and started conquering nearby islamic countries, doing "ethnic cleansing" in those areas.

I state my opinion based on John Stuart Mills' quote you shared. And, you might agree that a true public servant would not say one thing and do another. Free speech presupposes an integrity and valor underpinning an attempt at truth. But journalism has also failed us grievously. More people get paid today to spin a particular point of view than to dig and verify the truth or reasonableness or consistency in another man's word. God help us poor people caught in the middle of all the deceit.

I really respect your work. Keep it coming. Its the work of a rigorous and do-diligent mind. My opinion is that free speech by in large should be withheld from politicians! I'm not joking. Think about it. For all the people who needed, and wanted to believe in chance and accountability by government it appears that the record is showing that we elected a black republican with a scary terrorist name who does not believe in human rights to lead a country that is the false face of democracy!

Nazi's are evil bastards. People who deny that the holocaust happened, are morons, and need to get a nice slap in the face.
I think that the people that stand outside soldiers funerals and hold signs that say things like "God loves dead soldiers" and yell terrible things while the family of the deceased is morning their loved one, should have the right to say what they want, but I also believe that the people at the funeral should be able to beat the crap out them.

@LiberalViewer there is a real problem at the heart of purist free speech philosophy in that it doesnt inherently guarantee an equal platform to all speakers. That is something that must be specified additionally. I'm not saying I do advocate an equal platform for all speakers, since this would allow truth to be lost in the swam of ignorance and lies. However capitalism favours the views of liars and the ignorant in terms of which platforms are loudest.

What do people think about that book that was on sale on Amazon recently, the one that gave advice to adults about how to have encounters with kids. It was called The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct. Were Amazon right to sell it? Should it have been withdrawn? Or is this an exception to free speech?

@NoiseMaker231 I found the holocaust debate informative. I didn't know, for example, that the gas chambers were not in Germany but mostly in Poland. Most people I know think Auschwitz was a German city.
Finally, OJ had free speech, no one was going to put him in prison for writing a book. That doesn't mean a publisher has to publish it! If you don't understand that the 1st amendment applies to government not to publishers and citizens then you need to read it again.

If you had bothered to watch the debate rather than assume you knew both sides from the start, you would realize that what I found interesting were some rarely-known facts such as that the Nazi death camps were generally outside of Germany, that Auschwitz was in Poland, not germany, and so on. Sometimes people who are flat wrong will still make interesting points.
I recommend you listen to a speech by Christopher Hitchens on Freedom of Speech.

I think hollocaust deniers should be allowed their point of view. It could set a very dangerous precedent to deny them their freedom. For instance authorities could get rid of an inconvenient left winger, who denied Stalin's purges, based on exactly the same logic as you deny speech to a hollocaust denier.

This question smacks of an all or nothing sense of liberty. I however think we're smarter than that. Some things just don't deserve the protection of free speech. To put it in the context of Mill's argument, wisdom comes from the freedom of ideas, but what freedom needs be afforded after wisdom has been achieved. The Earth revolves around the sun & no further benefit can be gained by entertaining otherwise. Likewise, the Holocaust happened.

no opinion should ever be silenced... no matter how false it is. however, any speech that a reasonable person could consider threatening should have vast repercussions. yelling fire in a crowded theatre to cause panic (and others along this vein) as an example should be punishable by, no less than 1 year and no more than, the natural term of life, in prison, obviously depending on the perceived intent.

I wrote a whole dang essay on my opinion on free speech. I have way too much to say on this, and all of it will sound retarded to at least one person. Fortunately, no lay person like myself will ever get any meaningful opinions out, because all the other lay people want to keep others from breaking the silence which comes with conformity. Nietzsche was spot on with this stuff. Efficacy is failing; that's why there's the Tea Party growing now.

Not a "denier" but I am concerned about the discrepancies: if the Nazis were so evil then why did they allow the red cross into the camps? Why did the nazi records of deaths match with the records of the red cross which are orders of magnitude lower than the numbers reported by jews, which keep climbing???

@nunayafb I have a relative who was one of the first people to enter one of the less well known death camps. I tend to trust his, and all the other service mens, accounts of the death camps, mass graves etc. This was such a shocking and wide spread event that the UN created legislation in order to advoid future genocides. Infact the crime was so unprecidented that the word genocide had to be created for it. These things don't just happen. If it was a con hundreds of thousands were in on it.

@Nexius8 I have read stories of people who were in those camps, their accounts were never as explicit or evil as hollywood's creations! This brings up the other issue I have with the death camps: how is your relative alive? If the nazi's were so efficient at killing then why so many alive?
Mass graves are evidence of death not genocide, typhus killed many- not all jews either!
BTW, the UN also has legislation barring nations from disclosing evidence of extraterrestrial life, seen any green men?

@nunayafb Sorry, having reread I wasn't clear. He was one of the first soldiers. And he is no longer alive but that was from smoking. Just so you know where Im coming from I don't think the jews should have gotten isreal out of sympathy and I also belive they are commeting genocide againt the arabs there. Although a VERY diffrent scale. After all the forced removal of people is genocide.
I would be intrested to know the artical name about the aliens. It would be intresting reading.

@nunayafb Concerning your claims concerning the Red Cross statistics agreeing with the Nazis. The Red Cross has been quiet clear on this, they were aiming to help the victims not count them. Nor could they have collected such statistics since they were only allowed into some of the camps towards the end of the war. Holocaust deniers quote a Red Cross report, from this period, so badly out of context that information on an allied civilian camp is said to refer to a Nazi camp

I'm kind of on the fence about this. On the one hand, I fear a slippery slope, but on the other hand, I think of people like the Westboro Baptist Church, whose "opinions" could easily be classified as assault.
The issue is, however, Holocaust deniers, genocide promoters, and the like are all denied free speech in hundreds of countries we hardly think of as "oppressive" (Germany, Canada, UK, etc), and I think the free speech these people have could be construed as infringing on others' rights.
