Giulietta Simionato was an extraordinary mezzo-soprano able to move from Mozart to Verdi and be equally spectacular in both repetoires. This role, along with Amneris, is one of the greatest in the dramatic mezzo repetoire and Mme. Simionato excelled in both. Bravo!
This is a Covent Garden production from 1964 With Bruno Prevedi as Manrico one of a dozen tenors from the time who would be an absolute star today.Gwyneth Jones as leonora who would become a great Brunnhilde and Peter Gloosop as the Count di Luna who sadly died a few days ago and in one of the excerpts you can see me in the audience as an 18year old teenager. This was an age of great singing.Maria Callas one night,Carlo Bergonzi the next, Franco Corelli etc etc etc.We were spoilt!
@iduefoscari Yes, I am too of the opinion that Prevedi would be an absoluite star today, but he was sadly, shamefully undervalued in his time. And of course, Simionato is GLORIOUS! And also, it turns out that Jones is the only one among the cast who is still with us. :(
@jacquesurlus Oh oui !
yes yes yes yes yes. tears. yes ye syes. tears. yes.

She truly acts the role of a troubled mother! And the voice so smooth, so smooth.
One thing though, the music's a bit fast, isn't it? Interesting interpretation.

Simionato's Azucena is intense, brilliantly
expressive and has gravitas...but she is
not a wild eye gypsy casting evil spells
with a glance. She is genuine, believable,
and smouldering. The warm sonority
of that luscious voice sends shock waves
through the soul. Thank you for this
priceless treasure...an iconic masterpiece!

This is vocal gold. Do you have the rest? I would love to see more of Corelli in this production. Who was the baritone and soprano?
