XD This song makes me feel kinda bad, because I am the kind of person who can't watch a show without indulging a horrible nagging need to look up behind-the-scenes features and interviews to figure out what the cast and crew thought of it. It almost makes me nervous if I don't know.
Still, that aside, I love this song anyway. :) Charybdis testing well with teens and "You're making everybody mis" especially. ;)
I personally think the song is about how people want to completely deconstruct every story to figure out what it means and in the process they destroy the entertainment the story was meant to give people.
ahahaha this is great! Complaining about rabid fans, who analyze everything you say on DVD commentaries, in a SONG. That is on a DVD COMMENTARY. Hail Joss, our king and leader *looooool*
@lizgrrl22 Ahaha I completely agree. He's Xander, too, he's even said so in interviews, but yeah: everyone says writers are a lot like their characters, and Joss is definitely a Buffy. It'd be hilarious to watch him play the part with a wig...(:
This is set to the melody of another song, I just know it, but I can't for the life of me remember which one. D: Actually, now that I mention it, ALL the Commentary songs sound familiar. Anybody have any ideas?
I heard JW sing this on "This American Life" and he changed the second half since he was singing it as a solo. When he gets to the part where he realizes he can't diss DVD commentary and risk alienating his fans he says "but what about my fame? My precious semi-quasi-fame" it was really cute.
Personally I wouldn't care if he continually "spit upon" these things. I am a true Whedonite and will be a fan no matter what. (with the exception of Aliens: Resurrection; but that is because I didn't like one thru three).
I love this song, but it's not available for download anywhere. i know a way to download the audio, but is it immoral if i do that, even though i can't download it anywhere else?
JOSS. IS. BOSS. :D i think it's great how he can take the piss outta himself, or how he knows some people view him. as being 'depressing' and such. i also love how this is exactly how joss feels, because he says he never watched the special features on certain films so it wouldn't ruin it for him. and it annoyed him because he thought it destroyed the movie. i do get what he means. i love special features though ;) "you'll be ignored at comic-con" x'D <3 lmao.
Hell no! I also feel that Dollhouse episodes are somehow forced in production. If we take Firefly episodes - it's pure greatness, whereas Dollhouse has only flashes of greatness. I still enjoy the show (even though russians are presented there in the usual villianious way) but i know it can be so much better. I'm so relieved there was nobody to manipulate Joss at the production of Dr Horrible.
All these comments are saying that this is a song bashing FOX.
But, it's equally bashing the fans, basically. Special features, analyzing things, interviews, spoilers.
That's us. NOT FOX. So, I think it's bashing FOX, but also saying to the fans, "hey! Just enjoy it!". I agree with the bashing FOX thing but not the latter thing. But, I think it's pretty obvious that this song is not looking very highly on the fans.
@CommentaryTheMusical I have to agree with bendude606. I've been in fandom over 20 years and that's all most fans do; pick things apart, over analyze everything, etc. Now there's "shipping" too. I mean individual fans here. But when I became friends with an actor who did popular SF I started understanding. The job of acting is hard and when someone nitpicks it's frustrating and irritating. Fans insist a show/movie should be done like this. It gets to be a bit much for them. But they love fans.
I actually agree that his annoyance goes both ways: to FOX, who make him change his initial ideas, and to fans, who try to reason every thing in his works. Joss himself said, that he doesn't like shows like Lost, where there is always a reason. He prefers to concentrate on character development, rather than giving answers on how and why. You made a great point.
Yeah, but I think Joss should honestly be humbled that people like his work so much to understand what he's saying. I mean, fans aren't the only ones who analyze art. Reviews, critics, hell, in school, we analyze all these books to death.
I think it's great Joss doesn't give the answers "how and why" all the time, but if he does that, he shouldn't expect fans not to discuss and debate about the "how and why".
@bendude606 I think Joss is playing with irony here, while he's honestly critiquing the fan culture and what it's become, at the same time he's critiquing the whiny artist who complains about having an audience that cares enough to ask these questions. This song is a brilliant tightrope that manages not to condemn either phenomenon and leaves the message open to interpretation. Obviously, I think it's brilliant. :)
I think this might be my favorite on the comentary. (it's SO hard to choose though). This one is just...pretty. Even though Joss' voice is probably the weakest in the bunch, it suits the song well and the lyrics are very touching.
And "you'd be ignored at comic con" always makes me smile.
I guess it's the most touching and inquiring song of the commentary. It's a kind of creative riot against all the people (from FOX mostly) who try to conrol his art and measure it somehow. After all it's all about telling stories, not sellind DVDs
I think he can make some comments on the way we lose sight of the story in all the extras, without making dig at his fans. As NYBound said, he seems pretty cool about his fan base (from what I've seen on interviews).
A beautiful and poignant song. Funny, like all the "Commentary!" songs, but with a message.
Seems to me this expresses the vulnerability an artist exposes the self to whenever he/she puts the work out there. I love the way these commentary songs Out what could otherwise be things that fester in lesser folk.
It seems like he is actually complaining about producers forcing the storyteller to give his meaning, instead of leaving it open to the audience to use their imaginations.
Does anyone else think Joss is kind of peeved at all of us? I was listening happily along to Commentary! and then this song happened. I felt bad about my obsessive fanness all of a sudden. Have we been just totally annoying the hell out of him? Because that just sucks...
It's more a call to enjoy the arts rather than spend time acting snobbish discussing them.
Anytime you saw a kid wide eyed watching a sci-fi show, that's doing it right. Anytime you see a snobby art critic, or a teacher who's a nazi about the Classic epics, or a geeky kid spouting his superior knowledge of canon to make someone else look ignorant in comparison... that's doing it wrong.
So be a fan to your heart's content, because you enjoy it! Just don't take it too seriously.
The best song of the commentary as far as I'm concerned. It carries the most emotion and meaning....
One small thing - in the last chorus, it should be "stop", not "start".... changes the whole thing. Check the official lyrics on the main site if you don't believe me. =)
sounds more like he's upset at the fans for making that prequel.
