Hey renegade410 love the review and I'm in the market for a tactical vest. 5.11 gear has gotten my attention I've thought about this vest or their standard VTAC vest which you can customize but seems expensive. There's only one thing that makes me mad about this vest; "IT doesn't have a holster for when I hike in the back country of Montana here". I know that seems minor as you can put one on your hip but yeah. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks
@longhairsRcool The 5.11 Tactical Vest does not have a built in holster, but you can use the Backup Belt System holster and place it inside the large interior pockets of the vest. The VTAC vest is more like a plate carrier that has MOLLE on it. If you find that it suits your needs better you should be able to find a number of holsters that can attach to that platform. Hope this helps.
Excellent review mate. This is exactly the kind of detailed info I was looking for before buying.
Ive been looking for a vest for outdoors photographic and animal rescue work and now that Ive watched this, I know this is the right vest for my needs.
@nebula25x If you are using the metal GI style mags then you can get two in each pocket, but it mught be a little tight and a bit heavy. If you like to use the polymer stlye mages (like PMAGs) then you are only going to be able to get one mag in each pocket.
I changed my major from Business to Criminal Justice. Because I wanted to help people and protect people. Do you think it's better to have a degree in Criminal Justice and then go to the police academy or just go straight to the police academy?
In my opinion, most Criminal Justice courses are geared toward the lawyer/judge/DA side of law. I don't think that its any better to be a Criminal Justice major, I wasn't.
Police work is different from what you will most likely be taught in a Criminal Justice course. I took many of the courses and found that they were more geared for how to get a criminal off than how to put, and keep them put away.
But, as I said that's just my opinion and experiences.
Thanks so much for this video review! I was going back and forth between either getting this vest or the other MOLLE 5.11 tactical vest where you add all the attachable pouches and it has the mesh underneath. For my purposes, I think I'll just get this one instead.
I assume there's a spot where I can secure my pistol?
I can get two (2) standard GI metal magazines in each pocket. If you are running a polymer magazine like a PMAG you will probably only be able to get one in each pocket.
I got a khaki medium for IDPA, but I think I may get a black in large for EDC/casual as it does tend to fan out from the front with my P226 inside the waistband. It looks like something that would not look TOO out of place on someone in jeans and a t shirt. I have to wonder if it looks more or less tacky to non-tactical oriented people than a fanny pack lol.
@renegade410 I agree....The fanny packs are the 90's haha, I would rather buy some pants or shirts with more pockets than look like i belong in back to the future
Nice review. I use the Tru-Spec 24-7 Vest and love it as well. When you have to sit around the office doing paperwork, not having all that extra gear on your body is helpful. Then when you hit the street, everything is in place. The 5.11 I think is a better summer option for LEO work, but for fall, winter and spring, the 24-7 is a bit heavier. Stay safe!
I have not compared this to other tactical style vests. If I find another that I like I will purchase it and then do a comparison.
I have not had the oportunity to use this on duty yet. I hope that I get to use it soon, and I will let you know how it works out.
It does evenly support the weight that I put in it. I don't carry anything very heavy in the vest. Usually I carry an Airweight ASP, a small gun, and some other small items.
how much was this?
cause im really looking forwart to getting it.

So would you wear bullet proof vests under your shirt and then wear the tactical vest over the shirt?
lovetruly08 2 years ago
That would be what I would do if I was looking to stay inconspicuous.

Using the 5.11 Back Up Belt Sysytem you can secure a pistol inside the large pockets where I show my baton holder.

I don't think it would look to out of place. I wore mine a lot this summer and no one even looked twice at me.
I think it would be fine with jeans and a t-shirt or even 5.11 or Blackhawk gear.
I personally think it looks less tacky than a fanny pack and it has A LOT more utility.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

I could actually use a cold weather vest now. I'll have to look into the Tru-Spec vest.

Thanks for posting a review of this. I'm thinking of purchasing one but have some questions.
Have you compared this to other vests, such as EOTac, and if so how is compared to others?
Have you worn this during duty hours, if so for what purprose and how well did it work?
Do you think it evenly transfers the weight and doesn't cause neck or back pain quickly?
Thanks and stay safe man!

Does that vest protect against firearm fire?
love4christ71 2 years ago
The 5.11 Tactical Vest does not offer any ballistic protection, it is basically for carrying gear and concealing a firearm.
