  • classic! you know you're speaking well when they don't say anything about it at all, but instead just answer and continue the conversation as they would with any other Thai person.

  • sort the sound quality out pls....

  • Wow,I never thought I whould have a chance to see you seriously discuss my language.

It's so precious!! Keep talking ....I'm wathcing.

  • @wantwarm Thanks. I'll do some more soon.

  • to me, it's just their compliment as they always tend to be polite, granted i've only studied thai for 3 years, while visiting the country twice, but i've gotten the same response even with my crappy newb thai from the first year i started. but as i said, i'm just takin it as a "well, it's nice that you try for such a language', rather than the literal "you speak thai well", cuz we all know that in the beggining stages, this isn't true.

  • I know what ya mean, but there isn't much you can do.

You'd be better off not taking it very seriously. If someone asks you ทำไมพูดไทยได้, answer with something funny. For example - เป็นคนลาวไง

So every time someone asks you, consider it a challenge to come up with a better answer.

    Maybe something like - ไม่รู้เหมือนกัน วันหนึ่งตื่นมาก็พูดได้เอง

  • LoL. This is very true. The same thing happened to me.

  • So true.. wahahaha.

  • Of course, there isn't any reason you can't be ชัด before you are คล่อง its just unusual possibly because a number of people don't bother with really learning the rules of the alphabet before they start talking.

  • You mean ชัด not ชาติ.

To be honest, I much prefer when nobody goes crazy when I speak and just talks to me like a normal human being. It happens, but not as often as I'd like. Those videos might not be as interesting to watch.

  • i do indeed, i'll remember that now.

  • I agree, having no farang friends in thailand for a long time I didn't realize that "poot thai geng" was thrown about a lot, so my ego was pretty high after a month or so when I could order pineapple :)

  • exactly..'puut thai geng' is just a standard thai response that dosn't mean much.. but i think if they say 'puut thai chat', then you know you are getting somewhere.

  • sirsanuk, true :) If a thai person says to me now "คุณพูดไทยเกิง" i always reply with, "ไม่ใช่ชาติหรือ" to get a laugh.

I'm yet to hear the elusive "คล่อง", perhaps it's just used in writing? (at least that's what I tell myself anyways, hehe)

  • Not to say that the compliments don't give you a boost early on, but after years of hearing people the same thing it can often become negative.

Generally, you can get an idea of how you are doing from the 3 most commonly used words in commenting on your ability:

    เก่ง

    คล่อง

ชัด and maybe ชัดแจ๋ว now and then
