Just got to play a baroque oboe which was actually made by Marcel Ponseele himself today. The weight of a modern oboe in comparison to this is a ton. It's really lightweight. It doesn't require as much force, and was really fun.
However, it's really hard to make it sound beautiful, like he does in this video. Remarkable. My deepest respects to him. I know the hard work it takes the become a good oboist. JS Bach was not the only master in this piece.
@MrPenfold84 I'm 99pct sure this is the "saint Carolus Borromeus church" in Antwerp, Belgium: built in the grandeur of the Baroque era 1615-1621. look it up!
@Rotebuehl1 - Jupiter! THIS IS UTTERLY MARVELOUS... I must confess that it brought tears to my eyes! I have no appropriate words in the English,French,German or Portuguese langues to thank you for this JEWEL!
what i don't understand is why do modern oboes have so many valves, pads, etc... this instrument is basically a recorder with a reed and it plays pretty much in the same range.
...and, Marcel Ponseele - arguably one of the very finest baroque oboe players around, also here in sublime form, his heavenly beautiful playing carrying the whole performance - opening up totally new dimensions in no-nonsense poetic simplicity - proves the point, that one does not really need a a conductor..!

Muchas gracias
Does anyone know what Baroque Oboe he is playing ? It appears to be pitched in A=440HZ, and it looks like he has a Slur/Octave hole for his left thumb.
Wow. Beautiful!

I love the old style reproduction instruments. They have such a warm, raw and gutsy sound.

They're honestly two different instruments. The reed setup, the voicing, etc cannot be easily transferred from one instrument to the other.

Yes, you're right. Beautiful instrument, isn't it?

Marcel is playing on a copy of an oboe made by Thomas Stanesby jr in 1740s.
It only has two keys, for low c and e-flat (no octave key) and is made out of boxwood with fake ivory rings.
It's pitched at A 415 and it was made by himself and his brother Francis.
iwanttocomment 2 years ago 2
It looks remarkably similar to copies of Stanesby recorders -- and now I know why.
