Remember, Western civilization has not always been so free from tyrannical interpretations and applications of religion (i.e. Christianity). Over many centuries we've slowly progressed. The Bible's passages on women or slavery, for instance, are now dismissed or even held in contempt by most Christians. (We still see tyrannical interpretations imposed in the case of homosexuality.) Maher's specious argument needs to be replaced with one which takes into account countless other cultural factors.
Contrary to what he says, Maher does indeed exhibit a prejudice about Islam, for he assumes that the values he is denouncing necessarily follow from the religion. I am not particularly familiar with the Qur'an, but I needn't be. The point is that a religious text is interpreted and applied based on one's interpretation. There are many Muslims in the west (as well as in the Middle East, I'm sure) who hold western values.

The main difference being that Islam instructs virutally every aspect of an individual/societys expectations. Religion and politics in say...Christianity are different...Christ says, "give unto caeser" which directly distances the faith from the world. Islam makes a clear distinction and authorizes the taking of valueables from non-muslims because those who are non-Islamic...

It states that a non-muslim is to be permitted to live provided they live under strict Islamic jurisprudence. The value of these non-Islamic individuals is devalued because of their religious beliefs. This is a strict difference between Islam....

Hinduism & Buddhism are based on non violence (ahimsa). Non violence is practiced and applied to ALL BEINGS - animals, other humans, including children. Non violence in thought, word and deed. Hindus and Buddhists aren't supposed to eat flesh (although quite a few do.) and vegetarianism tends to make people less violent. How many mass murderers are vegetarian. (please don't say hitler, he was known for eating lots of steaks, pork & beef sausages and other traditional German meats.)
Of course, plants, fruits and vegetables are life forms, too, but they are the lowest forms of life. Therefore, as a Hindu or Buddhist, it is not as sinful to "kill" a pumpkin or head of lettuce, etc for your salad.

Okay good you responded. Jihad is to struggle and fight in the way of Allah. If a muslim female wears a hijab, is insulted in public, but continues to wear it for Allah, that's jihad. If a muslim sees oppression happening to a non-muslim by another countri and they order them to stop. If they end up going to war to stop oppression and they do it in the name of Allah, that's jihad. Remember, Western civilization has not always been so free from tyrannical interpretations and applications of religion (i.e. Christianity). Over many centuries we've slowly progressed. The Bible's passages on women or slavery, for instance, are now dismissed or even held in contempt by most Christians. (We still see tyrannical interpretations imposed in the case of homosexuality.) Maher's specious argument needs to be replaced with one which takes into account countless other cultural factors.

Contrary to what he says, Maher does indeed exhibit a prejudice about Islam, for he assumes that the values he is denouncing necessarily follow from the religion. I am not particularly familiar with the Qur'an, but I needn't be. The point is that a religious text is interpreted and applied based on one's interpretation. There are many Muslims in the west (as well as in the Middle East, I'm sure) who hold western values.

Islam is different from other religious belief systems because it's founder was not a pacifist who commanded that his followers follow a non-violent way of life and lead through inspiration and prayer, but rather he was a conqueror who advocated that his followers commit acts of violence so as to force the global population to adhere to his beliefs or suffer God's wrath. He was comparing Western values with Middle Eastern values but calling it Islam, and I contend that this is a categorical mistake. Religious texts are lifeless things that do not act on their own; they must be interpreted by people.

For example, there are many Christians who believe in evolution, even though it goes against a literal interpretation of the Bible. The main difference being that Islam instructs virutally every aspect of an individual/societys expectations. Religion and politics in say...Christianity are different...Christ says, "give unto caeser" which directly distances the faith from the world. Islam makes a clear distinction and authorizes the taking of valueables from non-muslims because those who are non-Islamic...

The Qu'ran very clearly states how the non-muslim is to be treated and their is a word for it called dhimmitude. It states that a non-muslim is to be permitted to live provided they live under strict Islamic jurisprudence. We can be pessimistic and say that the Middle East never will. I certainly can't see into the distant future. Basically it just calls for more secularism. Yes, these states may be tightly bound to their text, but Islam exists outside this area. A Muslim can have Western values, even if it means deviating from certain aspects of the text. Hinduism & Buddhism are based on non violence (ahimsa). Non violence is practiced and applied to ALL BEINGS - animals, other humans, including children. Non violence in thought, word and deed. Hindus and Buddhists aren't supposed to eat flesh (although quite a few do.) and vegetarianism tends to make people less violent. How many mass murderers are vegetarian.
