you have to move shifter into " N " on first gen prius
and second and third gen prius, move shifter into "N" and hold it there for 3 sec.
same with the power on/off button. if you want to turn the vehicle off while driving, press and hold power on/off button for 3 to 5 sec. you will still have brakes and steering even thou car is off, it just wont have electric power assist or power brake assist...

Picture a band wrapped around a cone shaped cylinder. this allows the gear ratio to change without actually changing gears. it doesn't have overdrive, because it doesn't have gears. that being said, it does have "neutral" which disengages throttle control, and puts the vehicle into a coast, allowing it to be easily stopped by the brakes.

it uses a CVT or continuously variable transmission. Picture a band wrapped around a cone shaped cylinder. this allows the gear ratio to change without actually changing gears. it doesn't have overdrive, because it doesn't have gears. that being said, it does have "neutral" which disengages throttle control, and puts the vehicle into a coast, allowing it to be easily stopped by the brakes.
