  • Had this game on my trusty 64.

Great soundtrack (as usual for a C64 game) but the gameplay was terrible.

  • c64 has very impressive music ability.

  • Someone good burp the Space Harrier theme and I would still rock to it.

  • Sad to see they didnt even add a scrolling rasterbar ground on the c64 version, a feature that is so easy to do on this machine. Would love to see what a modern remake on the c64 of this arcade could have been. The latest Atari port is quite impressive.

  • The music kinda, stops when shoot, is this a hardware limitation?

  • @Mrxdyuxd

i think its a hardware limitation in the sid chip

  • @TailsX97 This isn't good, the music of the game is simply awesome, one of the best game musics ever.

  • @Mrxdyuxd i think the space harrier theme from japanese master system bios is the best version.

    SEGA!

  • @TailsX97 I love the original version from the arcade, i think is the best, the master system version i dont like, the poor framerate and bad graphics make the game not so awesome as the arcade or the Saturn version.

  • @Mrxdyuxd oh i got a saturn.

i need to play saturn version :)

game gear version is pretty cool

  • @TailsX97 But the best version is the arcade, no doubt.

  • @Mrxdyuxd

    arcade is very good

  • I have played this version a lot on the C64. Tough I never get very far in the game, it was kinda great. Sure it was not nearly as good as the arcade version. And you needed very much imagination to recognize this as Space Harrier at all. But I mean: Hey, it was Space Harrier. And it was on the Commodore 64. That were enough reasons for me to justify the purchase. When I remember correctly, it cost me DM 29,95 when I bought it. :-)

And just a question: Why are you starting with level 7?

  • Where there floating heads in the arcade version ?!

  • Where can i get the music of Stage 8 Boss?

  • I used to play this with my friend a lot. We always thought that when he's running it looks like he's riding a unicycle.

  • Elite, I want my £9.95 back. You turned my Harrier hero into a floating sprite on a pogo stick.

  • What a bad conversion. The commodore 64 was capable of much more than that. Even the 8-bit Atari computers got a better port.

  • @Glumglufs Even the 8-bit atari computers got a better port? You probable are one of those c64 guys who think the c64 is the master machine. You're so wrong!

  • @LexorzNL

I don't know much about computers from that era.

But the Atari 8-bit port didn't even have colour (wich I take as a sign that they were more limited graphics-wise), and yet it looked so much better than this,

  • @Glumglufs It's sad that in the 80s the gameprogrammers did not take enough time to program the atari xl/xe, after years you see nice ports of 80s games from the c64 especially. So it is getting slowly proved that the atari xl/xe can do much more than what people thought. Some c64 guys/fans keep yelling that their machine is the superieur one, unfortunately, some c64 fans even yell better than amiga and st, can you imagine?

  • @LexorzNL

    I see.

They say C64 is even better than Amiga? But the amiga was a monster at the time, and it's 16-bit. They're insane.

  • ok when shooted it pauseed on me i got so mad at the game its sill a good game of space harrier

  • fast

  • I used to play this on the C64, it's been so long that I forgot how bad this conversion was. The memories have come flooding back. The music is quite good, that's about all lol

  • This port had the potential to be much better then the Master System version, considering that the C64 has about 47kb more ram then the Master System (IIRC the master system had 13kb), and i'm pretty sure the MOS 6502 was more powerful then the master system's Z80...

  • I remember owning this and wishing I had a master system. My parents would NEVER buy me one ( or a NES ). I had the commodore and vic20. Kids on my block never came over to play...I was teased. Years of therapy, and I'm still not over it...

  • Hey - what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Look how you've grown. You don't need therapy just some moderate emulation to bring perspective and closure.

I had a commodore 16...the computer that wanted to be something but didn't quite make it. ;)

  • nice to watch, but hard to play.

  • impressive for c-64

  • Sega should've

    ported Space Harrier

    Genesis/Mega-Drive

    instead of

    Space Harrier II

  • Well, if you were a good Sega fanboy, such as myself, you would have a 32X - which did get a great port of space harrier.

  • unless you get a license from Sega

it's illegal storing programs on SMS carts

  • worst version of Space Harrier ever!

  • @thelurker25 Yeah I was really disappointed at the lack of squared floors, and it had a 'Spectrum' look too. Still played it to death though.

  • Weird, i swear i've seen C64 Space Harrier which had those bright-dark bars on the ground for better motion feeling

  • avoid

    Space Harrier

    PC-Engine/TurboGrafx

    terrible audio

  • 1986 i remember playing C64 Space Harrier at a friend's house or seeing it at a shop

  • Sega Master System cartridges = better technology

    vs C64 disks

  • How do you store your own programs on SMS carts then?

  • Comment removed

  • @Jawattdenn

duh the Sega Master System cartridges were used to store the games

why ask me a pointless question about storing my programs on carts ?

  • @Jawattdenn

you misunderstood me i meant Master System cartridges

are (were) a better media for storing games vs disk media

  • put a C64 disk game near a magnetic field

doing that will delete, erase or mess it up

  • C64 disk games = loading time

    Sega Master System

    512 K cartridge games

    no loading time

  • how can a 8-bit C64 computer be very good for it's time ?

C64 had inferior graphics vs Master System

  • Because it had the best hardware for it's time(1981) compared to any home systems. (consoles/computers)

Master System came out 4 years later..

OFCOURSE the Master system was way better graphics wise (not sound)!!!

  • Ahle2

    C64 is a computer not a system

  • LOL.... ofourse it's a computer.... But likewise a system. I have 4 C64 COMPUTERS and a Master System CONSOLE (and 10 other SYSTEMS)!!!

  • Ahle2

are you sure C64 Space Harrier was released in 1987 ?

on the screen it says Elite Systems LTD 1986

  • Yes, i'm sure.... but it was copyrighted and developed in 1986!

  • i doubt C64 Space Harrier could've been any better because of the C64's limited hardware

    Arcade Space Harrier

    CPU 2 x 68000 @ 10 MHz, Z80 @ 4 MHz, I8751 @ 8MHz

    resolution 304 x 224 pixels

    palette colours 6144

    screen refresh 60 Hz

  • It is VERY limited compared to the 10.000 dollar, "state of the art" and "cuting edge" Arcade version... but it could have been done better compared to what it is, not compared to the Arcade, Master system, Amiga, PC engine... etc.

  • This could have been - should have been - done much better.

  • Amiga & Atari ST Space Harrier

    only good computer versions

  • nice music. Oh yeah.

  • it wasn't worth porting C64 Space Harrier

Sega 32X & Saturn versions arcade perfect

  • Did`nt it have nice high score music too?

  • what i dont get is why your mom let you write comments

  • Read about computerhistory before you post.

Space Harrier was released in 1985.

  • HAHAHA DISREGARD THAT I SUCK COCKS

  • The system was released in 1982 (26 years ago) and was very good for it's time.

This version of Space Harrier came out in 1987 !

  • @shalpp You're aware you're telling a German to write perfect English? :D

  • @tsuihark dogs bollocks

  • brilliant c64 version more like.

  • @Simon0

when i said C64 version is crap i am comparing

it to the 1985 Space Harrier arcade original game

C64 Space Harrier is (was) a terrible port (version)

you must be blind if you think it's a brilliant version

  • @JasonLee310 man it took you three years to reply? Anyway you might be right. I really enjoyed this game as a kid though. you cant expect the game to look anywhere near as good as the arcade version.

  • One of thje best thing's about the Computer Port's, Specificly the C64 Version is the Exclusive Boss song that appear's on most Compute rversion's of Space Harrier. It's acctualy quite Catchy.
