I think those that are upset with XMA arent saying that it doesnt take skill or discipline, they are saying that there is nothing war-like or military (aka martial) about it. Its true that I wouldnt know what else to call it, but these people cant consider themselves martial artists if they dont learn the actual combat applications. Being a traditional martial artist (non-sport oriented), its almost funny watching these guys because a lot of them act like they are warriors when they are not.
I am not against XMA, in fact it is pretty neat to watch sometimes. Im only saying that this should not be in the same category as martial arts. When people first learn that I study martial arts, this is what they picture me doing. Martial arts are no longer thought of as what they were originally intended and that upsets a great deal of people, including me. I actually watched Arnold Chon. He is very good. However, he uses lightweight Kamas as well. So both of them use weapons lighter than normal. But both of them are very good at what they do. I do not have a problem with lighter weapons or the traditional martial arts that some people call boring. I participate in both. Both are very difficult to master and are beautiful in their own ways. But i do have to say that molesting children looks very bad on this guy.
Why would a lighter sword be easier to spin? Seems like if you are strong and limber enough to spin a sword the heavier one would spin faster.
Or is there a sweet spot of weight vs shape? If you have a 6 foot pole made out of styrofoam vs wood vs steel..........which could one person spin the fastest?

Firstly you have to know that there were no such thing, or even a concept of "sports" until the western culture arrived to Japan. and of course Japanese martial arts exists prior to the arrival. All Japanese martial arts are called Budo (武道) in Japanese which is a completely different concept from sports, again the genre is DIFFERENT.
Budo is NOT about competing, winning, losing, recreating, entertaining or such having-fun-stuff.

Also, there are traditional weapons events 2 and he would have competed in those. Not sure how he did in them. They arnt flashy so most people would rather see the extreme ones.

Very intertaining. First, an aluminum balanced stick made to look like a katana is not a katana. Anyone who has trained in and with live steel knows that one would NEVER "play" in this fashion.
Second, save for one or two here none of you, by your comments, have never trained in kenjutsu I do & teach as well. I use live steel.

I actually watched Arnold Chon. He is very good. However, he uses lightweight Kamas as well. So both of them use weapons lighter than normal. But both of them are very good at what they do. I do not have a problem with lighter weapons or the traditional martial arts that some people call boring. I participate in both. Both are very difficult to master and are beautiful in their own ways. But i do have to say that molesting children looks very bad on this guy.

Why would a lighter sword be easier to spin? Seems like if you are strong and limber enough to spin a sword the heavier one would spin faster.
Or is there a sweet spot of weight vs shape? If you have a 6 foot pole made out of styrofoam vs wood vs steel..........which could one person spin the fastest?

If you are referring to Arnold Chon, he does not do tradition. He also does XMA and is badass. Also, what you said about traditional katas is untrue. They do master the steps because majority of those kata are passed down from as far as 500 to 600 years down. So learning them really is beautiful since you are learning something that has been done for centuries. However, I also participate in XMA and I really enjoy the flips and tricks. Those are also very difficult to master. I Love Both of them

Not really referring to Arnold Chon coz I don't know him. But trying to discount XMA practitioners and touting traditionalists as "real" martial artists just pisses me off and makes me want to put them back in their place. I practiced katas till my toes bled for years. It might have been pretty and historical, but it is useless alone, and back then nobody confined themselves to it the way martial arts schools do today. Two months of sparring overmatched the years of kata practice.

If you haters do not like this do not fucking click on this. While this is not effective in combat these manuvers are very difficult to execute. Also imagine the reflex skills it takes to do these release techniques, not to mention the speed he is swinging. The sword is not the same weight as a samurai sword but i wanna see you guys swing even a half pound bokken like that. Stop fucking hating on something you know nothing about. If he likes spinning things he should use a bo staff. 1. The sword is used to cut people not spin around like a toy. 2) That was all flourishes how many cuts were there. These wasn't one proper over head cut in that entire form. 3) Forms are supposed to show actual combat. This should not be called a form its just not how the samurai fought.

He knows about (at least some) of the movements. He said so in an interview. If you slowed down the footage (and were still able to make out the images) you might see him "pushing and pulling" and all the other stuff you are talking about.

Firstly you have to know that there were no such thing, or even a concept of "sports" until the western culture arrived to Japan. and of course Japanese martial arts exists prior to the arrival. All Japanese martial arts are called Budo (武道) in Japanese which is a completely different concept from sports, again the genre is DIFFERENT.

You DON'T AIM to win the prizes or accolades in Budo. That's the reason why Kendo is not played in the Olympics. We are afraid of losing the very core part of Budo by pursuing those wins or prizes, which Judo have forsaken. I'm not dissing sports. I love it. But regard Budo as sport is not just right at all. Totally unacceptable.
I'm 100% sure that it would be very hard to understand if you have never experienced it. Especially for non-Japanese people.

We was #1 in weapons in whatever group he was in. Was not the same groups you would belong too. Does not matter. The worldwide association he competed in, made HIM #1. ALso, he does do point sparring, but with no weapon.
So maybe you would win in that. If they DID do it, though, he could have been good.
Also, there are traditional weapons events 2 and he would have competed in those. Not sure how he did in them. They arnt flashy so most people would rather see the extreme ones.

I think people forget even the Samurai themselves were no Saints...It's just a shame he had to go and throw away everything he has. I looked up to him alot, I even use Sadness and Sorrow to psyche me up before a KAtana KAta. It is a real shame, but he deserves to be in Jail for doing what he did. Hopefully when he comes out he is reformed and realizes what's important.
