Ok... Before the NSWDEP made our school issue lenovos even harder to use, I could easily watch youtube videos, and movies. the computer used to run battlefield 2 pretty well too which surprised me. Mind you mine has 2gb ram.

My Lenovo s10-e runs film i HD and films from Youtube without any problems. A bit of loadtime, but you can ajust the buffer-size and turn down the res if Your Lenovo s10 is to slow. Best buy since my Lenovo T60 (2006 price ^ 2200 USD). Usable keyboard but not for "short-novel-writing"...and 2 USB's? Want at least +4, so first get at 4-6 USB-HUB and some ekstra loudspeakers if You enjoy music. 6 cell batteri will do, but an extra 6 or 9 cell is in place but 1 pc. of 1 Gb RAM (or 1,5 Gb) is ok. :)

I am prod posesor of the lenovo s10.

It's a very small and nice netbook, witch ACTUALY PLAYS GOOD VIDEOS.

It even plays 720p videoclips, aldough movies 720p are a little bit laggy.

I have my "Friends" "Joey" and "South Park" series and it plays them like a charm.

I have a 3-cell battery pack witch gives me about 3 to 3 and a half hours with the brightness turned on full and whireless off. using bluetooth, like i do with a bluetooth headset cuts it down to just 2.

i'm watching this on my lenovo s10e. i love it. it did have a problem loading videos, then i got opera and its faster then my old pc. i have smallish hands so i am fine with the small stuff. the screen is fine for what i want to do with it

Wow, I didn't realize how crappy netbooks are. I was thinking about getting one but I hadn't realized how gimped they are. They should make a high quality, high performance mini laptop that can really do it all. The technology is out there but I guess the market may not be.

what you need is a ultra portable laptop not a netbook, most ultra portable laptop is between 10 and 13 inch very light very thin with a reasonable performance(most of them can run vista without any problems) but much much more expensive than a netbook, probably from 900-3000d though.

I am not a fan of netbooks to be honest I'd rather have a small laptop like the MacBook but I know from college that it can be heavy and a worry to carry around but I'd rather have it for everything instead of having something more portable and less powerful especially spending a few hundred £ when I can do without. That said I am warming to the idea that there is a market for them.

I am watching your video on my HP 1035 (mini 1000) in HD right now, and I am typing this response on the very spacious keyboard. Netbooks are a good idea, especially when you want something super-portable, and you don't want to worry about damaging an Macbook/ Macbook Pro. But the lack of video, like Hulu, would be a negative aspect, I think

It's funny how all of your gripes were things that turned me off to netbooks, but now that I've owned my Acer Aspire One for 6 months, I can't imagine using anything else. I actually have no problem with videos. They seem to buffer even better than on my dad's desktop, so I have no issues there. I really love these things. I really don't like the idea of an instant on mode however, as I just want to boot straight into XP. Thankfully, my Acer does that for me.

no offense, but my netbook has the exact same processor, and only HD videos tend to lack sometimes. i can watch youtube vids even in high quality.

the problem might be the xp you're using. not necessarily that it's windows (even though it's crap), rather that it's poorly optimised. keep in mind that the preinstalled versions tend to be slow and resource-hungry. you might want to do a reinstall of xp (maybe nlite'ed) or use linux or maybe even osx86.

I would rather just carry my 13 Inch Macbook which will run pretty much anything I throw at it and still be happy with the portability.

Overall I think Netbooks sound good, but the Pros don't out weigh the Cons.

Ps: I would rather by an older White Macbook and that it rather than a netbook for the price. haha :p

Great Review, I know what you mean when you talked about being extra careful with your Macbook. When I take mine places I am very cautious about scratching and denting the aluminum. I just can't carry it like my old PC laptop (That thing is a tank). Honestly I don't see myself in the market for a Netbook. Mainly because the lack of power/ lack of space on the keyboard, mouse, and screen doesn't make up for the lightness or portability.

he probably used the pseudo browser in the instant on OS when he was testing youtube, had other apps on in windows, or was trying to watch HD in youtube which is pretty demanding. 1.6Ghz single core is PLENTY PLENTY to watch flash video.

i have an asus eee 1000he netbook and i am very happy with it. it plays streaming videos great and typing on its keyboard feels great too. i definitely feel better carrying it around rather than bringing my expensive macbook around with me.

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook runing the Atom processor and i must say that i really enjoy my experience with it. Granted the keyboard is small, but i haven't had any trouble watching Youtube videos or Hulu videos on it. This is my first laptop. I've always just had desktops, and the main thing that struck me was the size. My screen is smaller than the Lenovo at just over 8 inches. But i don't need anything bigger. It's taken the place of my desktop computer.

To be honest, I'd much rather and would only get a subnotebook if I was looking for an ultra-portable notebook. While they do cost a lot more, you get a normal and powerful processor (usually an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6-2.4 GHz), a long battery life, more screen real estate (12"-13"), a high resolution (1280x800), a good graphics chip (Nvidia 9400M, ATi Mobility Radeon); some also have an optical drive. A subnotebook can certainly replace a normal notebook and even a desktop.

Ok john the thing you said about netbooks not being able to watch youtube and hulu that is totally not true maybe it was your connection or you have not got the newest drivers but all netbooks have decent video playback, defiantly enough to handle youtube. Additionally the new atom can now handle 720p content so you can definitely buy a net book to watch your videos and I am planning to buy one of the Asus eee pc(1000HE).

I find it ironic that you say that smartphones don't have good keyboards and that the netbook has good ones, yet you later say that netbooks have very cramped keyboards with which it can get very uncomfortable to type and that "it's not gonna cut it." In that case, I'd just get a smartphone like the iPhone because, while the keyboard may be cramped, it's not gonna be as uncomfortable to write because it's virtual—uses a touchscreen. And I can put a smartphone in my pocket.
