it doesn't matter if the people around me have all fallen or changed. as long as i still stand, so will my religion, and you can't sway me or change me.
@daedrakiller77 Don't worry. I probably would've said the same thing, not even 9 months ago. Savor your ignorance for now, we're not going to force you to stop believing in God.
It'd be nice if you actually considered the opposing argument and tried to refute it, instead of putting your fingers in your ears and shouting about how you can't hear us, though.
I think the ledge didn't do so well, but that doesn't matter. Movies shmovies that's fluff.
Younger people are abandoning religion in droves, and that's a good thing.
Now to get them to embrace rationality and solidarity. The former is going decently, the latter could use some work. A lot of people currently still seem to be under the rather odd impression they can stand up to power in favour of their own wellbeing all by their little self. Or even foolishly think they don't need to at all.
Eh, still maybe it'll all be fine. Religion's going down, even amongst the muslims it's actually going down in a few places. Hopefully militarism and capitalism can go down next.
Build a true social democracy and a true enlightenment science and education build society in the end.
diddent Darwin convert to Christianity on his death bed. and cant people be atheist with out being smug assholes. jeez people. i can believe what ever i want... it seems atheist are the most judgmental people on earth. seriously.
I'm all in favor of promoting positive atheism...as long as we don't be douchebags about it. Right now, the public face of atheism are the jerks who throw hissy fits over Nativity scenes or high school football teams having a team prayer before a game. That's not positive, in my opinion. It only feeds the stereotypes of us screaming intolerance while begging for tolerance.
@WeedOfCrime i agree with you in a small aspect, however both of the things you mentioned violate our constitution in certain circumstances. If you want a nativity scene on your property, thats fine and dandy. But the government isnt allowed to endorse 1 religion over any other. This means that religious imagery or materials arent allowed to be endorsed in government buildings. If sports teams want to pray thats fine, but legally it cant be endorsed by the school. its the 1st amendment.
Nativity scenes shouldn't be paid for by our tax dollars and be placed on government lawns anyway and likewise prayer in football games should be left out on principal.
I agree with you about the use of tax dollars, but not all Nativity scenes on public land are paid for with tax dollars. Some are created by volunteers on their own time and using their own resources. And on what "principle" should we be intolerant of someone's beliefs? You don't protect freedom of expression by suppressing it. It's intolerant when the Bible-thumpers do it, what makes it less so when we do it?
JESUS CHRIST, HIS CATHOLIC-UNIVERSAL-APOSTOLIC CHURCH, SACRAMENTS, THE BIBLE, MIRACLES, HEALINGS, ST. MARY APPARITIONS, MESSAGES FROM HEAVEN, SIGNS IN 2011 ARE NOT A MYTHOLOGY BUT THE REALITY !!!
I share some of your points, but i disagree with the statement that atheist pride proves separation of church and state obsolete. Atheism is not the intentional disbelief in deities, its described more as removal of all religion. We are not substituting religion with anything, we are taking the church out of "church and state" separation. I.E. there is no such Church of Atheism.
Thundef00t, appealing to a bruised sense of nationality to promote atheism is the act of an intellectually bankrupt person that will strafe on real questions such as the rammifications, Im muslim and sudany, I dont believe atheists are the Satans brigade or whatever , but think about this , incorporating atheist pride with nationalism would just prove all effort to seperate church and state to be obsolete. but its still great that atheists can blur the line between secularity and america
well technically thunderfoot, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave was the first mainstream movie with an athiest protaginist... wait he converted at the end, FUCK WHITE PEOPLE DAWG!
GREAT JOB GUYS, GREAT JOB. Take all hope away from anyone who has faith, change the world by taking away the hope of 1 person at a time.
Dont even try to debate them about it just tell them how fuckin stupid they are for believing in a logical fallacy. The proof is on them amirite?? because since there is no absolute proof why should anybody anywhere believe in a god of anykind????
I mean atheists dont have the answer to our creation so it is 100% undeniable faxts that it cant be a God
Because he doesn't have the set of beliefs that caused one of the worst knowledge gaps in the history of mankind? Sorry, but I can't excuse people who think that blind faith in an ideology that is in large part responsible for the fact that we still don't have a cure for cancer could ever lead us to a brighter future.
@thegameulost "large part responsible for the fact that we still don't have a cure for cancer could ever lead us to a brighter future."
lmfao atheists will just blame religion for everything
grow the fuck up and learn that not every religious person is a fundamentalist christian or extremist muslim. without religion society would never even exist in the first place - that my friend is a fact. stupid ass ignorant atheists make me laugh
A completely secular society would fare quite well. Society doesn't need organized religion. The fact that faith exists within a population is a good thing. It indicates a high enough level of awaress of self to inquire as to our origins and start forming hypotheses. Organized religion, on the other hand, is simply a mechanism to trick people into accepting unreasonable levels of oppression, as demonstrated in the present day middle east and in medieval europe.
@thegameulost 2. whether or not society needs organized religion now is irrelevant. Our society was founded on the principles of religion and they have been accepted as common place. There will always be organized religion as long as there are people to believe in said religion. If religion itself was gone there would be no moral law and our society would crumble. Every single person down on his luck would commit crimes and our gov would be completely filled with liberals

@revelthehunter What utter rubbish. We don't get our morals from religion (have you even read the old testament??) religion gets its morals from people. If you were correct our jails would be full of Atheists instead of Christians.
Morality is inbuilt in our psyche, I don't need to believe in God to know that hurting others is morally wrong, hence why Atheists tend to uphold better moral standards than Christians, Muslims and Jews who need the threat of God's punishment to keep them in line.
@revelthehunter "if there was no higher power there would b no reason to be moral"
So the only thing stopping you from stealing, raping and killing is because theres a higher power who would punish you for it? And you call this moral?
"thats a hilarious statistic" Statistically atheist prison inmate populations in USA pale in comparison to Christians etc
How many wars have been fought in the name of Christianity, Judaism and Islam? Countless. How many were fought in the name of atheism? None.
@WilloBoarding nope, I dont do any of those things because I believe theyre wrong, not because i think i'll be punished. I dont believe in hell, I refuse to believe any just transcendental entity would cast any of His creations aside to suffer for eternity, though i cant speak for what His judgement would be
atheists have never been in a position of real power so idk why youre even making the comparison lol, youre comparing atheism to a philosophy thats been around for thousands of years
@revelthehunter "I dont do any of those things because I believe theyre wrong, not because i think i'll be punished"
But you said you'd see no reason to be moral if there were no higher power.. I can think of lots of reasons..
"atheists have never been in a position of real power so idk why youre even making the comparison"
You don't have to be rich or in a position of power to commit violent acts of war, look at suicide bombers. You don't see atheists blowing up people for their beliefs..

Okay, I'll admit. Maybe organized religion is necessary in EARLY civilizations in the same way that blindly obeying everything your parents say is necessary when you are under the age of about 5 years old. They're both too primitive at that stage of development to actually understand and think for themselves, so "because I said so" is a valid reason. Unfortunately for you, there comes a time when people, as well as civilizations, need to grow up and think for themselves.
Sticking to organized religion instead of finding your own path, whether you believe in a higher power or not, is like wanting to be a child forever, always wanting someone to tell you all the answers and always accepting "because I said so" or "because (insert scripture name here) says so" as a reason.
@thegameulost 1. organized religion isn't a bad thing. 99% of the time the people and preacher think for themselves and the message is positive. Wanting to be a part of something =/= blindly following. Has it ever occurred to you that people might appreciate the message and genuinely want to help other people? Going to church doesnt mean the people attending aren't looking for their own path either... sometimes people just need help finding it

Aren't Che, Agora, and Paul A-list atheist movies? Two of the protagonists in Watchmen are atheists. The Golden Compass was a strictly anti-religion movie. And I could go on forever listing popular tv shows with Atheist protagonists; Daria, House, Black Lagoon, Nip/Tuck, Full Metal Alchemist, Family Guy, etc.
Umm...I'd just like to point out that "Pitch Black" had a very prevalent religion vs anti-religion theme in it...specifically, I think it was Riddick's atheism being played against the Imam's Islamic faith. If I remember correctly, neither side really _wins_ the debate...it more or less gets resolved in a way that pretty much pleases everyone (in a good way, tho).
I just saw the Ledge! It is very good movie! Charlie Hunnam remind me heath Heath Ledger and i like those two!
Great story, well played and atheism vs theism is also well shown. Not all theists are psycho but i'm sure that theist have 1 more cause to be - that is religion. Religion could be strong motivation. Atheists are more live and let live. Theist unfortunately are believe it or HELL!
I liked the movie, but having the atheist involved in an affair like really doesn't help define secular morals, although having the cop's story does balance it a bit. The atheist conflict is too shallow despite the grave consequences: the Christian could have been anybody as could the atheist. The ending wasn't realistic: even the cop suggested that things could have been handled better. I don't want to spoil the ending so I can't elaborate. The Atheist seemed too gullible in this regard.
It's unfair if atheists have not been told you can get to Heaven by good works alone (but it's easier for a Camel to go through eye of needle). Children and the mentally ill go to Heaven. To many Christians live and breathe "Hell doctrine" without realizing that it may not be so cut and dry as they have teaching. Think of it this way: yes, I got eternal life, but still had to answer to my actions in life. How judgment takes place, no one knows. Please: be nice at least-- hope it rubs off.
People seem to ignore (this includes Christians) the fact that belief in Jesus does not give a Christian a one-way fast ticket to Heaven. It is clearly spelled out that all of creation will stand before Him and face judgement concerning their works-- so while a Christian would get eternity, it's often believed that they would to burn away their sins in purgatory (Catholic belief). A lot of Christians will go to Hell, according to the book of Mathew. (one more post).
Theists need to watch it and "take a hint." I believe but I'm more of a "yes Christianity is true, but until Christ returns we have the Holy Spirit and in my opinion-- no more miracles." I have many atheist friends and they applaud my friendship and understanding. To me this movie echoes a common misconception of what most Christians believe: children are not held to judgement of sin until they have reached an age (which varies) where they can consciously choose to believe and explain why.
@BIackRider If you are told by a believer in a harsh or vitriolic manner, condescending, satirically, or demeaning in any way, tell them to read: Mathew 7:21-23... Tell them that the way they are treating them is questionable at best and that you think they act as if they have God in their pocket. I also ask atheists to drop the "spaghetti monster" crap, or compare ancient Gods-- in other words: get to know them before you flatten them. Let them see how civil you are...you just might win them.
@BIackRider - Russell's Teapot is a flawed analogy as even other atheists have pointed out but the burden of proof is indeed on theists. However, gnostic atheists have to back up their claims as well when they make positive statements that imply they can be verified or falsified (such as "I know there is no god") just like gnostic theists have to do with their statements that fall under verificationist analysis.
@BIackRider We need more people like you: communication is a two-way street and although I consider myself a believer with no bounds (meaning I am scientifically minded as well) I often tell theists in addition to atheists to halt the vitriol-- both sides push curiosity seekers in the opposite direction you wish... I'm a critic of the "Atheist Experience Show" which bills itself as conducting "positive atheism" for non-atheists and it's far from that-- Matt Dillahunty savors calling us idiots.
I'm an atheist, but not a patriot. Patriotism is as illogical and disgusting as religion, and like religion, has led to terrible wars and great suffering. People can be both Atheist and Nationalist, but its immoral.
@TheNextTwilightZone What the hell are you talking about? I didn't watch the movie, I'm just talking about your second paragraph. I'm an atheist and all that means is that I don't believe in a supernatural being that created the universe; that does not mean that I am void of emotion and only wish to talk about "unnecessary brain chemistry". That is a complete generalization: what if I said that all Christians were closed-minded and self-absorbed? Also not true, just a generalization.
@55metalmonkey There are a lot of crypto-fascist Christians in the US who want the US to be a "Christian Nation," and believe the founders of the country wanted everyone to be Christian, and therefore everyone that isn't Christian isn't "American."
i like your videos because you always present sufficient arguments, but this one... atheism is awesome?american?patriot?a form of pride? despite the fact that these are not arguments, just opinions and the misuse of the word communism (you meant stalinism), these opinions are just false. I am atheist too, and atheism isn't patriotic and not a pride. I am neither proud nor shamed of beign an atheist . I respect you, but the least i can say is that this video is not far from the religious ones
@motorheadanthrax Heheh. Atheism's own militant streak is both a counter and a parody of religion's aggressive and intolerant nature. I personally get a kick out of being criticized by religious nutjobs as intolerant or invasive, precisely because this essentially amounts to an admission on their part that I have been an excellent student of their ways.
Religion deserves no respect at all, because 1) it offers no respect at all, and 2) it offers no evidence at all.
Also I hope everyone please dont attack anyone else beliefs, I understand that many ignorant people attack Atheism which is very wrong. “When our hatred is too bitter it places us below those whom we hate.” - François de la Rochefoucauld
@ymca398 so yu r tryin to say just let ppl live in ignorance and let the ignorant lead the world??? whats wrong with you. there comes a time in humanity every now n then when ppl wake up and go to battle against darkness/ignorance. its time to go to battle against false beliefs, fake prophets, liars, hypocrites. we cant let them run our countries. they have driven us right into muck. time to change that. religion has no place in educated society. let science lead the way!!
@chinamanspeakenlis I dont wish to argue with you. You have your beliefs and I have mine, Do not call someone ignorant because the believe in something else. There is a difference between Religion and Faith, I do not support organize religion. Do not attack someone for having the basic right to choice, if you are going to just attack "ignorant" for using the basic right of by choosing being alive, then you are just setting a bad example for yourself. Cant we all just get along?
@chinamanspeakenlis what the hell are you talking about! he made clear his beliefs and what he supports while being honest and inclusive and you just bash him!? "so yu r tryin to say just let ppl live in ignorance and let the ignorant lead the world?" he has made clear he is a secular believer you imbecile! people like you give a bad name to secularism an atheism, go back to your cave.
I am a Christian that believes in the theories of evolution and the Big Bang. I am really fascinated by science and hope to get more into it some day. I do not take part in a church and i just like to you say I love you videos, I like seeing what other people believe in and are very intelligent. Also most Christians take the Bible stories like "The Creation of Earth" as a story that is NOT true, but have so spiritual truth. If you do believe the bible is 100% correct, then no comment.
@ymca398 OMG. FINALLY SOMEONE WHO THINKS LIKE ME. omg, dude. you totally made my day. I'm not a christian. my motto is : I believe in God, not religion.
@ymca398 So you pick and choose which parts of the bible you like, or do you think the entire thing is fake? If only some parts are true, on what basis do you define the true bits and the fake bits?
The problem with religion (Christianity in particular), is that the Republicans base so many of their "political arguments" off of things in the Bible (i.e. gays can't get married. Why? It's in the Bible). I'm not against religion, and I believe that that freedom should be kept, but when you start doing stupid religious shit that interferes with not just my life, but the lives of 400 million other people living in the U.S., that's where the line needs to be drawn.
@DerrenBrown100 with atheism there is no such thing as dark or light. you get to create your own meaning. you'll have atheists who will impose their sense of right and wrong on each others just like religions. have fun.
So the believer, merely suggests an answer, by using the very linguistic context of the question to give meaning to an empty sound! Someones testimony to the circumstances they live in is accebtable but testimonies to the origins of the universe is understandably difficult to accept!
@farzanatasneem "But by definition, the creator of this universe should be the one who has no origin nor end nor sleep nor tiredness, who is beyond time and space." - Says the person defining it. I would define such a creator as mythological clap trap. Each to their own, just shut the fuck up shoving it in my face. I wouldn't put up with my children shovelling such shit in my face every day of the week, let alone adults.
@DerrenBrown100 Atheists killed hundreds of thousands of people e.g. Hitler, Stalin, Mao and the 1999 Columbine killer who shoot school kids to death if they answer that they believe in God/Jesus. So the logic is too faulty.
Differentiate religion from God. Religion is man-made and so is all ideology and myths, This include atheism, communism, Evolution, Big Bang, String Theory are all just theories and have not been observed and illustrated,
@DerrenBrown100 Just shake the IC chips it might become a laptop, and the buildings migh just evolved and sprang by itself without builders and designer. The theorists himself of evolution, Darwin said in his biography that if after one hundred years you don't see any specie evolving then discard this theory.
@DerrenBrown100 Sceince is not the authority either to declare whether God exits or do not exists. Before science said earth is flat. Now it's found to be spherical. The scientists too are not the ones who placed the galaxies and calculated the orbit and revolution speed with respect to each of the masses of the planets and the sun
@DerrenBrown100 The God of the bible is diffrent from the God of some of the religions. Read the bible first otherwise we'll be reading man-made books and self-made books that did not stand the test of time, cultural and langauge differences of several authors, the New Testament fulfilling 3k propheises of the Old Testament, History and archeology verified the places, people and stories in the bible. Philosophy and theories and mythical books are imagination, subjective and might not happen
Well, who's to say the other religions aren't right? Maybe the mormons have it right and we'll all go to hell! Jk, but seriously, I feel like all religions are correct, and all forms of atheism is correct, simply because it's the human's belief. If he believes he'll go to valhalla, who's to say he won't. It's a certain comforting mindset to believe that there is a greater place of ascendency, and maybe the brain gives off one last thought before death, an eternal hallucination of sort. It's onl
@Burntshmallow i believe you are going to die right now because what you says makes no sense. A bus is going to crash through your house and then explode in such a way that your house is vaporized instantly, and even if you arent in your house, you will be too, but no one else will be harmed, even if they are in your house where this magnificent explosion will take place. 3 ... 2 ... 1... now! still here? damn. I guess just believing something isnt enough to make it true.
I disagree with one of the things you have in the description, "Atheism as being Awesome and American". I am also an Atheist but Australian and there are 1,000's of other atheist all over the world so this "awesome and american" is so incorrect.
I have voted this video down just for that reason.
@cleticprincess1956 That "description" is not meant to say that Atheism is only an American ideal, TFoot is merely interested in helping raise awareness here in America that atheists aren't bad people. That statement in no way precludes other nationalities, it is merely a campaign focused on atheism in America.
Correct Atheism is a worldly view point the accptance of all things. You only get radical's from fundamental differences and we all are on this tiny blue-green alga hued speck of soil and water so why believe in a religion that separates and divides. Currently we have no where to go. Humans haven’t been able to break away from earth’s planetary gravity we are only able to orbit earth.
The Holy bible is a book of Arabism activism. Jesus is just a name that is prostituted with veneration to impose ambivalent respect. As you read the bible and it states names of places and meanings but they are only words and the words are ambiguous and easily contrived as the word fideistic states. Science works with fact and exacts of knowledge not the vague double entendres of the bible that are ambiguous in answer in need of further dissection. I perceive science, math, and physics as godly.
@ttopperr What science do you study? Sure although I agree with you in the most part about your assertion of what the bible really means yet "The bible: 1 = 1,000's; Science: 1=1" your ending claim is ludicrous. If you truly are a person of science then you will know that it is forever changing. The bible still maybe as you claim 1=1,000's but I beg to differ science is shifting 0=infinite 0 rather than 1=1. Sorry yours is basic math not science as a whole, science shifts (chaos theory)
Phhht. Who cares what the people who make a movie believe. I don't care whether the makers of a given movie are Christian fundamentalists, muslims, hindus, scientologists, oden worshippers, Lunos worshippers, or members of that fake religion from Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle" (which seemed like a pretty cool religion to me), so long as they don't work in propaganda for their goofy little beliefs. No, when I consider watching a movie, all I ask is "is it any good?" and that's all anyone should ask.
If America just went back to its deistic roots, that would be fine enough. It's not realistic to expect an atheist majority. A public split between atheists and deists, or even between atheists and unitarian universalists would be reasonable. Whatever keeps the fanatics out of power.
Has anyone seen "The Ledge"? That movie sucked. The main character is a douchebag. If some asshole was fuckin' around behind my back with my wife I'd try to force the fucker off a building as well. Religion has pretty much nothing to do with the movie. The Atheist in the movie was an asshole and deserved to be punished. That's not to say he jumped. You'll just have to watch the movie to find out.
In America, religion is a choice. Standing by a rational belief is the basis of patriotism in the U.S.
"Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus." - Thomas Jefferson
I like agnosticism better... I mean.. I choose to believe that there is the possibility of a higher being, but I also choose not to listen to the bullshit of religion... but IMO from reading comments and cheering on and applauding Tfoot's videos... Atheists are aggressors just as much as theists... Why spend all this time and energy proving them wrong? When you could just stand back and watch them be stupid? Eh? Agreement?
@Swift4U I wish more Athiests/agnostics were like you, instead of the "LET'S BAND TOGETHER ON VIDEOS AND THROW THE SAME RECYCLED ATTACKS ON RELIGION OVER AND OVER AGAIN." They get freaking annoying I swear, I don't mind people sharing their views, I just hate it when I'm watching a video of a cat riding a turtle and a huge religious debate ensues with both sides trying to cram it down eachother's throat. You have been awarded +5 brownie points for being intelligent, redeem at local super market.
@Swift4U I agree with you, but I feel like words are poorly defined these days. Atheist does not specifically refer to disbelief in a higher power (that's what is called Strong Atheism). More to the point, Atheist just means not theist, and is generally used to refer to anyone who does not strictly belief in a god (be that strong disbelief or simple acknowledgment). Also, being gnostic means you belief that there is proof for religious beliefs while being agnostic means you do not belief that.
@Swift4U Agnosticism is for those who can afford themselves that luxury. For the countless people throughout the world who have been -or still are- confronted with religious bigotry, intolerance, mass-murder, persectution and threats, atheism is a way of standing against these lunatics and openly saying: "Enough is ENOUGH!"
Agnosticism is about opting out. Atheism is about actively fending off. Its militant streak is a response to the highly aggressive and intolerant nature of religion.
@Swift4U I would agree if it were not OUR rights, mine AND Yours, to believe, think and learn what we want, being attacked. They are trying to ban your ability to learn certain ideas (like evolution for example) in school, even if it's a scientifically proven fact. That is why we act aggressively towards many Christians/other religious people. It's not a matter of just watching religious people be stupid, which is also fun, but defending our rights to believe and learn whatever we want.
Sadly, Atheism needs a better name. Too many on the Christo-fascist right do not understand the word and use it as an insult because they have never bothered to learn the meanings of the words that they abuse. As a Wiccan I run into this a lot, because the religious wrong is too brainwashed to figure out that a lack of religion, is not a religion. Might be why they call pro-science, "evolutionists", thinking that science is a religion, too. Those stupid Christo-fascists.
As long as it isn't "Bright".... terrible name for atheism. Ooh! I have a good one! How about: SANE. Yes, my religious affiliation is Sanity, thank you very much.
I rather prefer rationalists or reasonists. perhaps that would better suit, but it could apply to traditional Wiccans as well, even though there are a few Atheists that oppose all religions, not just the extremist, evangelical ones.
i appreciate the effort, but the ledge is the worst movie you could have picked as a sort of monument to atheist introduction to drama. It was rated pathetically, and is a remarkably bad movie... Here's to hoping no one takes this recommendation seriously and it slips back into the dark until a better movie with an atheist hero can pop up...
Southampton Atheist Society have organised what we believe to be the first UK showing of The Ledge on Sunday 10th July. 10am on the University Campus, Building 2 Lecture Theatre K. We have room for about 50 members of the public. Please feel free to ask me any questions.
Depend on where in Europe you live. If you live in Romania (the most fanatically christian country in Europe) ,Poland, Greece or Italy you'd be equally ridiculed by powerful christian lobbies for daring the question religion and God.
The highest amount of atheists in Europe are found in the countries of Scandinavia, the Czech Republic, Estonia and the Netherlands.
Only 16% of Estonians believe in God, 19% of the Czechs and 23% of the Swedes.
the only thing I don't like about this video is the patriotism you made between Atheism and America. We all know deep down patriotism isn't good, it causes pointless wars and wastes our time. We should be proud of HUMANITY not our individual NATIONS.
I suppose one reason people criticize Wikipedia is a misunderstanding of what makes something a reliable source of meaning and truth. Some people are only truly comfortable with the idea of absolute truth, as handed to us by an unquestionable authority. Occasionally, people depose of such authorities when they are shown to be unreliable in one way or another, without said people realizing that the problem was the appeal to authority, not the particular authority being appealed to.
@wspol624 Great examples, and how interesting! Etymology occasionally interests me greatly, but rather than reading a dictionary with etymological roots I'd like to pick up a book of "interesting etymologies," if such a book exists.
@Thunderf00t I've always liked your videos, T, but I have to make a small objection; is it not supposed to be "ablowing", and not "a blowing"? I don't know what a blowing is, but it sounds... suspicious.
@artblack01 Good sir, spell check will not inform you of the more whimsical aspects of the English language, like those used in poetry and rhymes and the like. Words like "a-blowing" or "a-waltzing" is not widely considered an established term in formal English, but it is a part of "applied" English nonetheless. Admittently, I did leave out the hyphen. I meant to write "a-blowing".
"The wind is a blowing" makes "blowing" sound like a noun, I think, and one could only imagine what it would mean.
@Pomme843 Good point.... but there is no reference for this in any English text I have looked through or even anywhere on the net.... I think instead of a hyphen you mean apostrophe.... like the wind is a' blowin' .... I did find that somewhere... though is doesn't look right to me either. Nor A-Waltzing.... I did find a' waltzin' They are neither correct (nor incorrect) spellings in poetry or rhymes and having taken English lit, poetry and having studied some rhymes, have never seen it.
@artblack01 Curious. In Norwegian middle school, we were taught a (I believe) British children's song by your Irish English teacher. The song was called "Waltzin' Matilda". In it, the word "a-waltzin'" is to be found. I don't know if the "a-" prefix changes the meaning of the word, or if it's there simply to add a syllable to make the lyrics fit the melody. That, however, is how I interpreted the title of the vid; sort of a rhymes-like exclamation, to express joy, perhaps. (cont).
@Pomme843 AAAAHHHH, I see the issue you are having. Okay, I took music and I see where this can be a problem.... In music notation, when doing choir or any singing part the words often have hyphens in them in where ever the music influences the syllables. So Ha- ve a ni- ce da- y sung with ha ni and da being longer than the ve, ce, and y. and sometimes shorter as well but it depends on the author of the music.
It's about time too. People are getting a little sick of the very controlling nature of these religious zealots, the countless examples of hypocrisy & dishonesty, the lavish lifestyle of the TV evangelists, Harold Camping, Ted Haggard (etc. etc. etc.), child raping catholic priests, being preached to about morality and then seeing the perversion in the church (which I personally have seen too), the monumental amount of lying by creationists...enough is enough!!
Saying that all atheists are evil because of their PoV is like saying all christians are pedophiles. Seriously if you call someone evil without even knowing him personaly, only generalizing a group of people makes you evil. That's what Hitler did, didn't he? He decided Jews are evil and tried to get rid of 'em. What makes you different with such narrow PoV.
@wspol624 There is merit in your answer, I rarely have to tell people I'm an atheist here in the UK because we don't tend to have the hardline christians they do in the USA, in fact I've only had two conversations regarding my atheism in the past 7 years
Well hang onto your hat my son. There is a growing presence in the UK, of born again american styled baptists, they are throwing big money at developing schools to isolate and indoctrinate the next gen of Faith Consumer. Starting to infiltrate organisations and positions to manipulate social organisations.
It is big business and the UK a big rich market. They may have to tweak the sales pitch but they will use fear and deception.
@VideoAudioDisco09 Indeed, at least 2 old cinemas near where I live are now churches catering mostly to Africans living in London, one of the only times I've been challenged about my atheism was by a born again African dude who tried all the old tricks but ended up almost running away once I started asking a few questions.
Good on ya! The avaerage brainwashed minion can't stand a bit of informed scrutiny. It would appear, not surprisingly, they are targeting lots of immigrants, Africans are superstitious historically and probably the origin of the judeo-christian god, tey had the Sky God a non interventionist overwatcher.
Prehaps remind them Bishop Tutu said, when the whites arrived we had the land and they had the bible, now we have the bible and they have the land.
I just saw the Ledge. I really wanted to like it. I'm an atheist and agree that we need real atheist heroes in movies.
But this movie was shit. It was basically to atheists what battlefield earth is to scientologists. It was so two dimensional and everything was explained beyond the overly obvious. the coincidences weren't credible at all. One of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Atheist heroes in what sense, like Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, Pol Pot. Let's say the world had no religion, what would you think the world will turn into? A utopia maybe lol. I mean come on, let's think for a minute, has the world changed for the better since the flourish of Atheists? Religion in a sense gives us a reason to be respectful and giving without thinking of its rewards or if its a tax deductible.
@mackjeez Your reductionist reasoning is childish: Stalin et al were atheists so they did bad things. Children and the ignorant think like that. Whatever their personal morality may have been it doesn't come from rejecting imaginery friends. The heroes of atheism, if we even want to say that, are Darwin, Spinoza, Einstein, Sagan, Hawking, etc. Not because they reject god but because they champion reason and intelligence, because they all favour reason over ignorance.
@mackjeez Your response don't make much sense, but I suppose you only read the first sentence of what I wrote.
I'm talking about a hero in a fictional movie that is an atheist because it makes sense and not because he's bitter or angry.
Religion is nothing but thinking of the reward! Good or bad, a religious person does it for the hopes of getting a spiritual reward. For an atheist life is precious, so we must treasure it and make it better for everyone around us. Life itself is the reward!
There you go with the Atheist hero again, either its in reality or in fiction it doesn't make any sense. Most heroes these days are depicted as anti heroes with that are vengeful, hateful and godless and religion is always the a culprit of some sort.
@mackjeez Well, that's a step in the right direction, but a hero that's an outspoken atheist without being bitter is really rare in fiction today. There are a lot of good people who are atheists in the real world and it needs to be represented in main stream fiction.
Still I feel like you're trying to force this discussion on me, when all I wanted to say was that the Ledge, the movie Thunderf00t mentions in this video, is a really bad movie.
@mackjeez No true hero is without a little bitterness or flaws, otherwise he's not a sympathetic character that can be related to. I may not be an atheist who has ever cheated or stolen or lied but that doesn't mean people who are are really bad people, sometime when you fall in love it doesn't matter who it is, the wife was probably in a bad marriage and would have eventually left her husband, it happens to 50% of all marriages in the world... hero is a stretch but they just mean protagonist.
@mackjeez "Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, Pol Pot" hardly anyones heros... especially not for any atheists I know. And I don't think any atheists (at least none I am aware of) believe in the concept of Utopia... utopia is not really a good thing, especially when you look at it from an evolutionary stand point... Utopia implies no problems, but that also implies stagnation, stagnation implies rotting.. (bad example) necessity is the mother of invention... When religion ruled we called it the Dark Ages.
So calling you moron who's full of shit makes me angry and arrogant? It couldn't just be that you're a moron who's full of shit, could it? No, perception is not everything. There's fact and then there's fiction. It is not likely that God exists because there's not one shred of evidence in favor of that. Not that you would understand what evidence is if you think it's prevalent in politcal debates.
The ledge so far seems to be doing very poorly on rotten tomatoes, 0% in fact!
I do expect some of that being due to the reviewers own religious nature sending them into attack mode (some reviews seem to have a hint of that.) and I do expect it to climb from 0%, but it doesn't look like the Ledge will change much.
At the end you insinuate that Darwin was an Atheist, He was Agnostic. Very big difference between the two, Regardless, it's good to see Atheism is becoming more accepted world wide.
@wylie662 Him supposedly being an agnostic doesn't say much about his belief or disbelief in god(s). Agnosticism = the view that we cannot know for certain whether one or more gods do or don't exist. Its opposite is gnosticism, the belief that gods most CERTAINLY do or don't exist, depending on whether you're a believer or not. in short, Agnosticism/gnosticism is about views on the possibility of knowledge of god(s), while theism/atheism is about belief or disbelief in god(s).
This is a joke lmao, if you think atheists in anyway face the same discrimination as other minorities then you need to have a reality check. Who the fuck honestly cares if your an atheists other than inbred retards whos opinions do not matter in the first place.
it doesn't matter if the people around me have all fallen or changed. as long as i still stand, so will my religion, and you can't sway me or change me.

WeedOfCrime 1 month ago

I share some of your points, but i disagree with the statement that atheist pride proves separation of church and state obsolete. Atheism is not the intentional disbelief in deities, its described more as removal of all religion. We are not substituting religion with anything, we are taking the church out of "church and state" separation. I.E. there is no such Church of Atheism.
DannyIsaac1 3 months ago in playlist More videos from Thunderf00t
Thundef00t, appealing to a bruised sense of nationality to promote atheism is the act of an intellectually bankrupt person that will strafe on real questions such as the rammifications, Im muslim and sudany, I dont believe atheists are the Satans brigade or whatever , but think about this , incorporating atheist pride with nationalism would just prove all effort to seperate church and state to be obsolete. but its still great that atheists can blur the line between secularity and america

Unfortunately for you, there comes a time when people, as well as civilizations, need to grow up and think for themselves.
thegameulost 2 months ago
@revelthehunter
Sticking to organized religion instead of finding your own path, whether you believe in a higher power or not, is like wanting to be a child forever, always wanting someone to tell you all the answers and always accepting "because I said so" or "because (insert scripture name here) says so" as a reason.
thegameulost 2 months ago
@thegameulost 1. organized religion isn't a bad thing. 99% of the time the people and preacher think for themselves and the message is positive. Wanting to be a part of something =/= blindly following. Has it ever occurred to you that people might appreciate the message and genuinely want to help other people? Going to church doesnt mean the people attending aren't looking for their own path either... sometimes people just need help finding it

RayTech70 7 months ago
People seem to ignore (this includes Christians) the fact that belief in Jesus does not give a Christian a one-way fast ticket to Heaven. It is clearly spelled out that all of creation will stand before Him and face judgement concerning their works-- so while a Christian would get eternity, it's often believed that they would to burn away their sins in purgatory (Catholic belief). A lot of Christians will go to Hell, according to the book of Mathew. (one more post).
RayTech70 7 months ago

It's in the Bible). I'm not against religion, and I believe that that freedom should be kept, but when you start doing stupid religious shit that interferes with not just my life, but the lives of 400 million other people living in the U.S., that's where the line needs to be drawn.

How was the universe formed?",
A:"Buba created the universe!".
Q"Who or what is Buba?",
A:"Buba is the creator of the universe!".
Q:"But who or what EXACTLY is Buba?",
A:"Buba is the creator of the universe!".
So the believer, merely suggests an answer, by using the very linguistic context of the question to give meaning to an empty sound! Someones testimony to the circumstances they live in is accebtable but testimonies to the origins of the universe is understandably difficult to accept!

I disagree with one of the things you have in the description, "Atheism as being Awesome and American". I am also an Atheist but Australian and there are 1,000's of other atheist all over the world so this "awesome and american" is so incorrect.
I have voted this video down just for that reason.
cleticprincess1956 8 months ago

You have been awarded +5 brownie points for being intelligent, redeem at local super market.
ajaksbackpac 8 months ago
@Swift4U I agree with you, but I feel like words are poorly defined these days. Atheist does not specifically refer to disbelief in a higher power (that's what is called Strong Atheism). More to the point, Atheist just means not theist, and is generally used to refer to anyone who does not strictly belief in a god (be that strong disbelief or simple acknowledgment). Also, being gnostic means you belief that there is proof for religious beliefs while being agnostic means you do not belief that.
DylanM213 8 months ago
@Swift4U Agnosticism is for those who can afford themselves that luxury. For the countless people throughout the world who have been -or still are- confronted with religious bigotry, intolerance, mass-murder, persectution and threats, atheism is a way of standing against these lunatics and openly saying: "Enough is ENOUGH!"
Agnosticism is about opting out. Atheism is about actively fending off. Its militant streak is a response to the highly aggressive and intolerant nature of religion.
GluttonForSex 8 months ago
@Swift4U I would agree if it were not OUR rights, mine AND Yours, to believe, think and learn what we want, being attacked. They are trying to ban your ability to learn certain ideas (like evolution for example) in school, even if it's a scientifically proven fact. That is why we act aggressively towards many Christians/other religious people. It's not a matter of just watching religious people be stupid, which is also fun, but defending our rights to believe and learn whatever we want.
artblack01 8 months ago
Sadly, Atheism needs a better name. Too many on the Christo-fascist right do not understand the word and use it as an insult because they have never bothered to learn the meanings of the words that they abuse. As a Wiccan I run into this a lot, because the religious wrong is too brainwashed to figure out that a lack of religion, is not a religion. Might be why they call pro-science, "evolutionists", thinking that science is a religion, too. Those stupid Christo-fascists.

The highest amount of atheists in Europe are found in the countries of Scandinavia, the Czech Republic, Estonia and the Netherlands.
Only 16% of Estonians believe in God, 19% of the Czechs and 23% of the Swedes.

I suppose one reason people criticize Wikipedia is a misunderstanding of what makes something a reliable source of meaning and truth. Some people are only truly comfortable with the idea of absolute truth, as handed to us by an unquestionable authority. Occasionally, people depose of such authorities when they are shown to be unreliable in one way or another, without said people realizing that the problem was the appeal to authority, not the particular authority being appealed to.
airandfingers 8 months ago
@wspol624 Great examples, and how interesting! Etymology occasionally interests me greatly, but rather than reading a dictionary with etymological roots I'd like to pick up a book of "interesting etymologies," if such a book exists.

@Thunderf00t I've always liked your videos, T, but I have to make a small objection; is it not supposed to be "ablowing", and not "a blowing"? I don't know what a blowing is, but it sounds... suspicious.
Pomme843 8 months ago
@Pomme843 like wind, a blowing wind.wind blows, it doesn't ablow. Spell check should have informed you that "ablowing" is not a word.
artblack01 8 months ago
@artblack01 Good sir, spell check will not inform you of the more whimsical aspects of the English language, like those used in poetry and rhymes and the like. Words like "a-blowing" or "a-waltzing" is not widely considered an established term in formal English, but it is a part of "applied" English nonetheless. Admittently, I did leave out the hyphen. I meant to write "a-blowing".
"The wind is a blowing" makes "blowing" sound like a noun, I think, and one could only imagine what it would mean.
Pomme843 8 months ago
@Pomme843 Good point.... but there is no reference for this in any English text I have looked through or even anywhere on the net.... I think instead of a hyphen you mean apostrophe.... like the wind is a' blowin' .... I did find that somewhere... though is doesn't look right to me either. Nor A-Waltzing.... I did find a' waltzin' They are neither correct (nor incorrect) spellings in poetry or rhymes and having taken English lit, poetry and having studied some rhymes, have never seen it.
artblack01 8 months ago
@artblack01 Curious. In Norwegian middle school, we were taught a (I believe) British children's song by your Irish English teacher. The song was called "Waltzin' Matilda". In it, the word "a-waltzin'" is to be found. I don't know if the "a-" prefix changes the meaning of the word, or if it's there simply to add a syllable to make the lyrics fit the melody. That, however, is how I interpreted the title of the vid; sort of a rhymes-like exclamation, to express joy, perhaps. (cont).
Pomme843 8 months ago
@Pomme843 AAAAHHHH, I see the issue you are having. Okay, I took music and I see where this can be a problem.... In music notation, when doing choir or any singing part the words often have hyphens in them in where ever the music influences the syllables. So Ha- ve a ni- ce da- y sung with ha ni and da being longer than the ve, ce, and y. and sometimes shorter as well but it depends on the author of the music.

Saying that all atheists are evil because of their PoV is like saying all christians are pedophiles.

Religion in a sense gives us a reason to be respectful and giving without thinking of its rewards or if its a tax deductible.
mackjeez 8 months ago
@mackjeez Your reductionist reasoning is childish: Stalin et al were atheists so they did bad things. Children and the ignorant think like that. Whatever their personal morality may have been it doesn't come from rejecting imaginery friends. The heroes of atheism, if we even want to say that, are Darwin, Spinoza, Einstein, Sagan, Hawking, etc. Not because they reject god but because they champion reason and intelligence, because they all favour reason over ignorance.
Tapiola2007 8 months ago
@mackjeez Your response don't make much sense, but I suppose you only read the first sentence of what I wrote.
I'm talking about a hero in a fictional movie that is an atheist because it makes sense and not because he's bitter or angry.
Religion is nothing but thinking of the reward! Good or bad, a religious person does it for the hopes of getting a spiritual reward. For an atheist life is precious, so we must treasure it and make it better for everyone around us. Life itself is the reward!
Laseranders 8 months ago
@Laseranders
There you go with the Atheist hero again, either its in reality or in fiction it doesn't make any sense. Most heroes these days are depicted as anti heroes with that are vengeful, hateful and godless and religion is always the a culprit of some sort.
mackjeez 8 months ago
@mackjeez Well, that's a step in the right direction, but a hero that's an outspoken atheist without being bitter is really rare in fiction today. There are a lot of good people who are atheists in the real world and it needs to be represented in main stream fiction.
Still I feel like you're trying to force this discussion on me, when all I wanted to say was that the Ledge, the movie Thunderf00t mentions in this video, is a really bad movie.
Laseranders 8 months ago
@mackjeez No true hero is without a little bitterness or flaws, otherwise he's not a sympathetic character that can be related to. I may not be an atheist who has ever cheated or stolen or lied but that doesn't mean people who are are really bad people, sometime when you fall in love it doesn't matter who it is, the wife was probably in a bad marriage and would have eventually left her husband, it happens to 50% of all marriages in the world... hero is a stretch but they just mean protagonist.
artblack01 8 months ago
@mackjeez "Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, Pol Pot" hardly anyones heros... especially not for any atheists I know. And I don't think any atheists (at least none I am aware of) believe in the concept of Utopia... utopia is not really a good thing, especially when you look at it from an evolutionary stand point... Utopia implies no problems, but that also implies stagnation, stagnation implies rotting.. (bad example) necessity is the mother of invention... When religion ruled we called it the Dark Ages.
artblack01 8 months ago
@TheOptimistPrime
So calling you moron who's full of shit makes me angry and arrogant? It couldn't just be that you're a moron who's full of shit, could it? No, perception is not everything. There's fact and then there's fiction. It is not likely that God exists because there's not one shred of evidence in favor of that. Not that you would understand what evidence is if you think it's prevalent in politcal debates.

wylie662 8 months ago
@wylie662 Him supposedly being an agnostic doesn't say much about his belief or disbelief in god(s). Agnosticism = the view that we cannot know for certain whether one or more gods do or don't exist. Its opposite is gnosticism, the belief that gods most CERTAINLY do or don't exist, depending on whether you're a believer or not. in short, Agnosticism/gnosticism is about views on the possibility of knowledge of god(s), while theism/atheism is about belief or disbelief in god(s).
