  • i want more of this. Which website can i go for this?

  • Why not simply Nxe4 when the bishop comes down for the pin? you get a pawn advantage, and you can then push the f7 pawn to get control of the file

  • Why not a6 with the idea of eventually pushing b5 to undermine white's center a bit?

  • What about this? (I'll call Nc3 move #1, but it wasn't.) 1. Nc3 O-O 2.Bg5 Ne8 3. Qg4 f5 4. exf5 exf5.

I think that would be a pretty good line...

  • The first two moves you talked about, were the same as mine. :p

  • 6:30 Your e5 pawn is being attacked, so you have to do f6, and after black moves his queen away, black then takes on e6 (or you take d5, doesn`t matter), and the white knight goes to d5, after which it is very strong, and if black tries to exchange the knights, white can take back with the pawn or the rook (if it was on d1), and have a very good position (walk with the pawn if pawn takes, or make an Alechine cannon, after which white has an even better position).

  • I chose 0-0 for the first move. My second and third choices were Rd8 and a5. Rd8 to get the rook on the semi open file with the queen. a5 as a preventive move to keep white's knight on c3 from coming down and causing trouble.

All my choices come from my thinking that thinking that black still has a few things to take care of before the middlegame, and castling would be the most important.

  • Why not castle queenside?

  • @mattfca I also thought about it, but white just gets a dangerous attack on the queenside (just put the position in the engine, it scores +0.75). White can try to counterplay on the kingside, but still, white has better chances. P.S. Just do Rd8

  • Why does White try to exchange bishops??

White's bishop is much better than blacks!

  • After youre first idea of exd5, at 4.40 black can simply play Nxd5 and win a pawn.

  • @chucknorris2O1O 1...Nxd5? 2. Bxe7 Qxe7 (Nxe7 3. Qxd7) 3. Nxd5

  • The co-ordinates are definitely more visible now ..............you seems to practice a lot ...what is your official rating n original name ...???

  • My lines:

1...a6 is a little slow but can give for example these lines:

    1...a6 2. Qe2? b5 3. if not b3, then bxc4 4. Qxc4 Nxe4! Nxe4 exd5! (Rd1 doesn't help as then black simply takes the queen and gets queen rook and a pawn for a knight and a queen)

    1...a6 2. b3 b5 3. Qe2 (white sees that if black plays b6 he will lose a pawn)

    1...O-O-O (Rd8 is probably better, then O-O) 2...a6 3.b3 b5 4...bxc4 5. bxc4 Nxe4 6. Nxe4 exd5 7. cxd5 Qxd5 and white has totally lost the center.

  • That line is of course VERY uncertain and I wouldn't play it.

The move that I found best was 1...b5! as it is quite forcing:

    2. cxb5 is not so good as 2...Nxe4 3. Nxe4 exd5 dominates the center..

To maintain the center white would probably play 2. b3, but then 2...bxc4 3. bxc4 Rb8! of course white doesn't want to give away this file so he plays Rb1, he doesn't have to, but otherwise black is in a better position anyway! So 4. Rb1 but now 4...O-O

  • This forces the exchange, and black can then continue his plan, Rb4.

Better perhaps is 4...Rb4 5. Rxb4 cxb4 And now white has lost the center and a pawn with Nxe4. But 4...O-O is probably a little safer.

  • Thank you Jrobi. This video is very helpful and very Impressive !!!

  • which software u use to draw the arrows and make the videos in general?

  • I have a list up on my site - thanks for checking out the vid!

  • thanks, great stuff

  • I came up with 0-0-0... XD

  • These candidate moves actually help my chess!

  • Same here pinkyfrogs23 - I am looking forward to continuing this series for quite some time. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • what rating are you? You seem to have a lot of good wisdome about the game

  • @jrobichess how come you didnt even consider rook f6?

  • Jrobi is the best. I am his biggest fan.

  • chess learning cant get any cooler than this..

  • Thanks jbragadeesh - I appreciate the comment!

  • Love this channel!

  • Thanks ezzthemc!

  • Around 6.05 I dont think that black's best move is knight to d6, i rather have my knight left and protecting the g7 square, cause if knight d6 this follows; Bishop H6 , Bishop(b) f6 , and then we se that suddenly black gotta defend hes king from checkmate, i rather go with a move such as black bishop's to f6, Supporting the pawn on e5. And white i think will not caputre cause next move knight to f6 threathning the pawn and now suddenly white queen gotta move =) , But i like what you made up also

  • How is Black having a slight advantage here?

  • Good work. Castle or exd5 are 50/50 but either way I think white has such strong centre control it is hard for black to recover, even from this early position.

  • Very good =)

  • Thanks 3rdWiseMan!

  • wat is the program that you use?

  • I think it's chessbase

  • Good videos, and I request more!. I'd like to see at least one video that shows how checkmate was made. I am learning the openings but get into trouble once the match progresses, will you adress the middlegame later on? what would also be good to see is a couple more of blacks moves to counter white and maybe for those outhere that are starting out just one great video of the strategies, and normal rules for chess, you know pawn formation, controlling the middle... it would get many views. ty bye

  • Hey robi.Would you like to play chess against me) Im about 1900 in blitz (fqe rating) and 1700 Long game. In yahoo or wutever

  • Sorry I made an error I meant 23. Qxd5 & 23. Rh4=

  • **Regarding this GM practice I do not see the value in this position, perhaps after move #23 may spur on some interesting lines. It looks to me Alekhine poor choice lost this one. Not perhaps anything Cima did correctly, he just capitalized on a poor move #23. 23. ...Qxd5? cost A.A. the game(23. ...Rh4= looks better) Otherwise he surely could have drawn the position. What are your thoughts regarding my 2 points?

  • Thanks for your prompt response to my e-mail. I will post my comment here for now. I enjoy the work you are doing w/vids & chess, as I see, many others share the same sentiment!

  • This is the first chess video that I respect. I enjoy the layout. I have watch a couple of your videos and I think you should stay with this format. it's a lot easier to see and keeps me craving for more. thanks a lot man. =]

  • I agree!

  • My teacher told me that

"Chess is a game of sophistication. It takes 10 minutes to learn, and a lifetime to master"

I think wehat he said was true.

  • Completely agree! =)

  • very accurate

  • jrobi, fantastic video series... keep on the great work. I really appreciate your honest approach and great advice.

  • Thanks gmarino3324!

  • I've beaten grandmasters 9 times in tournaments over the last two years. Not great I admit, but not bad either. Instead of knigh to c3, pawn to e2 first then black has two white bishop lines to consider instead of one and there is no move that black can make to stop white moving his knight c3 afterwards.

  • I wonder if White should have moved Knight move to c3 in the first place. e3 may have been the better move.

  • Great vids jrobi; I haven't played chess in a few years and your videos really have helped me get back up to speed and improve my game. You've got my subscription, and keep up the good work!

  • Thanks Quanta!

  • very good video

also think in 6:10 the white B can go to h6 and black is in trouble

  • Thanks for checking it out Masky - that would be a good move for white, pretty much forcing BF6. Black will have enough time to get the rook out from F8 after that avoiding the mate threat / big loss of material.

  • Another nice video jrobi. I was thinking of candidate moves throughout and when you were explaining your branch variation I thought that after blacks Knight to d6 (6:05) a devastating move by white would be Bishop to h6, putting black in a heap of trouble. Anyway good stuff!

  • Thanks Fins! I think that would be a solid attacking choice for white. Black would need to move BF6 to counter that and it should give enough options to continue. Thanks for the comment and checking out the vid!

  • i won the chess tournament and what program do u use to show the chess moves?

  • yes... i wish to know that too. what program are you using?

  • Hey keep up the good work. nice ideas. Im just a begineer so i really like your chess lessons. won the chess the tournament at my school thanks to u.

  • That's awesome Bobitoz! Thanks for checking out the vid and commenting!

  • nice video

  • Thanks narutoluis!

  • Also i would like find out what chess program you use to do your vids.

  • I think that's Chessbase, if it isn't then it's most likely Fritz.

  • Hey i love your videos, but i think you should do more opening vids, Thanks!

  • Thanks for the comment and checking out the vid! I have been doing some pre-recording work on my next opening vid so stay tuned - shouldn't be too long.

  • I really enjoy your videos, continue to do a great job ;)

  • Thanks Elvyne963 - I appreciate the feedback!

  • Interesting, I saw some tactical possibilities there

  • That's great ytmndman! Feel free to post any ideas or lines you saw a potential for!

  • Great video. I've had some pretty good success when I generated different options and lines.

  • Thanks GMorganis!

  • Great series of videos! Keep them coming!

  • It's a good thing if you don't tell the final result in these kind of tutorials. More often than not, if, say, white wins, then beginners think white must have played correct moves till the end. Far from it, white may have actually played bad moves until the end when black may have blundered a piece or something, prior to which black may have played solid strong moves! So, it is best to just discuss the correct moves in certain positions (which you did) instead of focusing on the end result.

  • Thanks Fiery - I appreciate the comment and I agree - I think improving the ability to make solid moves through candidate lines will just improve things overall, at least from my perspective. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • i like your videos but you should show how the match ends :)

  • Thanks Mat! I would have like to do it but the max length on the vids I can get is 10:50 or so - and it feels like I am just machine-gunning through the remaining moves without giving them the credit they deserve to show the end of the match. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • nice video. However it would be alot better if you were able to find positions where the correct positional move leads to more than =ity or a slight advantage

For example, say there was a position where white has a slight advantage, 0.1 in computer terms. And lets say that a certain move, eg Nc4, gave white a larger advantage, say something like 0.3-0.4, whereas all other moves, eg bg3 or a3 or f4 only maintained the very slight advantage white originally had.

  • Thanks for the comment Florian! I could use non-GM games for these videos (i.e. my own personal games) from either my side or my opponents side - that would probably give a much higher chance of finding a move that gives that kind of positional gain. It's definitely a possibility. I think working towards maintaining equality in a tight position is beneficial too - but maybe a mix would be good. Definitely something to think about. Thanks for checking out the vid!
