It might be that they are a great way to study the effects of genetic disposition on a species. Much of the research conducted using fruit flies has directly improved the human condition, from better understanding of how genetic mutations are passed on, to better understanding of trisomy 21--Down Syndrome. wow, way to go Sarah.

This video is deceiving because the earmarked monies Palin is responding to are not for biomedical fruit fly research using D. melanogaster, but are rather for olive fruit fly pest control to protect the olive and olive oil industry in California. So it is not clear that Palin does not know that Drosophila is used for genetic research. One could legitimately question the public value of pest control for an industry whose contribution to the overall US economy is most likely miniscule.
Perhaps you didn't notice, PHD Reflex, but she didn't specify what type of fruit fly research she disapproves of. So unless that's the only type of fruit fly research going on in Paris France, it sure sounds like she's talking about any and all fruit fly research.

This video is deceiving because the earmarked monies Palin is responding to are not for biomedical fruit fly research using D. melanogaster, but are rather for olive fruit fly pest control to protect the olive and olive oil industry in California. So it is not clear that Palin does not know that Drosophila is used for genetic research. One could legitimately question the public value of pest control for an industry whose contribution to the overall US economy is most likely miniscule.

I think when Republicans show less contempt for science, they'll get more votes. Before the election I eagerly bought a Nature magazine issue because they touted they'd have interviews from McCain and Obama on their policies related to science. McCain didn't bother with an interview, and Obama gave a very eloquent and thought out, sincere response to all questions.
It also turned out McCain's scientific advisers were not scientists, but entrepreneurs.
