Remote start is only good for Winter! Oh wait, we're talking North Dakota here.
.
I know people who leave their diesel trucks running 24/7 through the Winter if they use it daily. They only shut it off if it will be off for a week or more. Something to do with the engine wear...
When you buy a car in that area, it comes with a plug to keep your engine warmed up. Every morning you will drive down the street and see who forgot to plug their car in the night before, lol. Also, FWD and AWD/4x4 cars are pretty much a necessity. RWD only doesn't do very well. I usually just used All-season tires since they wouldn't wear too bad. Driving in that weather just comes down to skill and you're so used to it, it doesn't bother you anymore.
Before feeling my first -10 night, I thought my lungs would freeze just from inhaling air that cold. But it's a DRY cold, and I was out in it for five minutes without getting panicked, without a heavy coat even.
.
HOWEVER, try that in a 50-mph North wind and now we're talking nipple-dropping, miserable weather that would keep me off the road. In some ways, ND can be worse than the big cities in Alaska.
.
I am moving near Minot next week. Call me crazy. Their economy is rocking!
I was stationed at Minot during the early 70's. I thought it was the end of the world. Not a place for an 18 year old with no car. I was back to visit in '88 and they wouldn't let me on the air base. They get a lot of that they said. It sure has grown from the little village I knew. Ruthville had a gas station where we could charge gas till payday, a bar, a restaurant, a trailer park, and a Mayor! (Benny Schimmelphennig) He named Ruthville for his daughter. God Bless you all.
That was one of my points though, if it DOESN'T start at 70 blow windchill in 3 hours, then you need a tuneup, tuneup is a general phrase, in my mind, meaning to checkout ALL items and replace with new, that, that is deficient.
Last February my van started in that 60 below windchills EVERY day after sitting at work for 10 hours each day. Only thing that was NEW was the battery. 160,000K on it.
Yes, it does matter if the freeze plug stays inside. It can cause hot spot on the outside of the cylinder wall and SCORE the INSIDE of the cylinder wall!!
Yes, frost plug heaters are still made and still available.
How much does a block heater cost (plus installation)? The snow is beautiful. I'm a Southern boy, but you never know where the AF will send you! In Virginia the coldest I ever remember it getting was 0. I can't begin to imagine the windchill at neg 70. Talk about learning to respect Mother Nature!
I would guess maybe 30 bucks, but you can easily install one yourself. Just punch out one of the freezeplugs on the side of your engine block (using a hammer and screwdriver - doesn't matter if the plug falls into the engine jacket) and install it. You'll need something to catch the coolant that's gonna pour out and then you need to refill the radiator and make sure nothing leaks afterward.
The Rollin'in is still, here. They are damn good for breakfast. They even provide coupons to Minot residents at 20% off on various entrees. Oh, well, take care. I am off to Arrowhead. LOL!
It's true but avoidable...it usually doenst get cold enough in garages to freeze the engine. Also most people in ND have engine block heaters installed...if your car is parked for more than a few hours, like over night in your driveway you just plug it in and the cold wont freeze the block...no big deal.
TLF was full when we got to Minot, so we stayed at the Comfort Inn at the mall for about a month. I knew we were in a different world when I saw all the electrical outlets in the parking lot!
I drove through Minot, and went to the Comfort Inn, I had driven all the way from Detroit and beyond. There was this pretty little brunette at the desk. She was so sweet and friendly, I should have asked her out. Dammit. My sister said she used visit there from Power Lake in the 80s when she went to boarding school there.
You're not supposed to start an engine that is plugged in. The instructions with the frost plug heater always state to UNPLUG before starting the engine.
If you set your remote start to start the engine every three hours, there's no way it'll ever get too cold for it not to start. Unless you're in need of some electronic part or a tuneup.
That was one of my points though, if it doesn't start in 3 hours in 70 below windchill then it needs a tuneup. Tuneup in my mind is a general phrase meaning to check ALL items and replace with new, that that is deficient.
Last Feb when we had windchills here to 70 below, my van started EVERY day after sitting 10 hours at work, each day, in those windchills. The ONLY thing new was the battery. 160,000K on it.
I never had a car with that luxury. I'm not sure I would trust it to start every couple of hours. What if the engine doesn't start (for some reason), but the battery just keeps turning it over - you end up with a dead battery and/or a burned-up starter.
That must be a pretty common misconception. They, the electronics, will only try to start the engine, twice and only twice. Not to worry about a dead battery.
Atlantic City will close schools for periodic flooding. Soem areas close school for the few snow storms. I suppose people in cold country would miss way too much work if they had to cancel work and school for all of the below zero days.
Hey, I walked a whole mile to school, (in ND) all winter long, when I was a kid!!
I don't know why kids nowadays should be pampered when it comes to going to school in the cold. Learning to live through a little of the cold leads to learning COMMON sense. Something that is sorrily needed nowadays.
It's difficult to know when someone is joking , in print. Unless of course they put in a :), or something similar.
@escort500xlr Aren't you just a badass... too bad we drive VEHICLES to school, and when there's a foot+ of snow on the ground you never know whats under it.
It's all in the wind. I finally get it. Don't bother looking at clouds, as people along shorelines, do. The clouds, here, are only good for an idea if a tornado is close. I have a windchill predictor chart. For example, if it is negative 20 with a wind of 40 mph - it feels like neg 57 and frost bit will occure in 5 minutes of exposure to the elements. This is the 1st winter I will endure. Fortunately I am not working this winter and csn keep warm, more often, inside without hassle. ND is windy.

In the right conditions 3 hours may not even cut it.
Those conditions would be -
Some of those conditions would be -
Battery condition,
Engine displacement,
and of course Windchill.
A -70 windchill will cool a motor insanely fast.
