Hi ya. Loved listening to this. Just curious, I'm wanting to learn but have no idea on what type to buy. I dont want to get one and then have to replace it a few months down the line...I'd like one that will do me for a fair while. I'm serious about learning. Thanks :)
Never played but appreciate very much ! I notice this tape advise though. I used to play drums at one time and I'd do the same thing with my snare, as you say to reduce ring. The seventies required different drum sounds then. I'd also put a blanket or heavy pillow in my open faced base for the same effect . Sorry, just saying !
Ehmm The skin of my bodhran is showing some cracks. Its a single skin type. Do I need to put tape on it?? My first bodhran ever so I have no idea but seeing how you say you put tape on it, I might need to as well?
Tell me about the tape on the permiter please, is it standard electrical tape or a specil kind of tape, and how well does it stay on? GREAT PLAYING!!!
that was a non tuneable 20" goatskin from John Millen at ThunderheartdrumsDOTcom
i bought it in 95 at an Arts Festival. The skin was very hard and fairly thick. I did a number of skin treatments to soften up the skin, and sanded the skin as well.
Added some tape, and the inside of the drum has some tubing insulation sitting around the perimeter on the skin to give it more bass
ok....your right lol......a bit in the cups when last emailed you....it is a tipper.......and STILL struggling with it lol,........hope your holiday is warm and full of cheer
Excellent playing. Not only do you have a good feel for the instrument. But you are a technician also, you understand all the areas of and tensions in the Bodhran.. Good work
thanks for the comments! i've played drum set for years, but the bodhran is now my absolute obsession. the simplicity and elegance of the instrument and also the tonal component that you can get with the hand on the back of the skin.
I really like the bass you're getting from this bodhran. I don't play one, (I play mandolin, flute, and cello) but I really admire the bodhran because its seemingly simple design is blown away once you hear what it can do...
pretty sweet. thats a little too deep for what style I'd be playing. What I'd be playing mostly is bluegrass and some for square dancing. But I dont have one yet, i will in a month or so. and keep it up!!

Sweet playing, Kip!

the tape isn't to fix the skin...its to deaden the overtones and ringing of the drum
if your skin is cracked try some leather care product
Neats Feet Oil
Lanolin
I use a little bit of Lexol ( very rarely and very sparingly)
You only need tape if that is the sound you want from the drum

@Labrabob
thanks for the comment.
its just whatever electrical tape i had around the house. it stayed on very well for this drum
i have had other drums/skin types that the tape would come off after a few days
some makers ive talked to will use a bit of contact cement to keep the tape in place

do you bend your wrist or do you keep the wrist straight
if you play with the wrist bent, try to straighten it out (dont bend it) andadjust the tipper so the tipper is facing back towards you
all the movement is from your elbow to hand...like you are opening a door or turning a key
think of your forearm as an axel in a car.
it turns from the elbow down
